If a corporation isn't abiding by labor laws then they should be punished. Corporations aren't required by law to provide health care. (although Wal-Mart does)
Speaking of Wal-Mart, does it bother you guys that they have managed to do within the framework of the free market what government can't do even with the power of taxation? (provide cheap presription drugs)
Daniel, it's not so much that they think that Wal-Mart is evil, is just cuz they kick the unions out. If they would only let in the poor unions then Wal-Mart would no longer be evil.
"As one of the largest corporations in the world, the presence of Wal-Mart in local communities has a significant impact on the local economies in which it operates... a study at Iowa State University in 1997 found that small towns can lose almost half of their retail trade within ten years of Wal-Mart opening... Wal-Mart's constant demand for lower prices caused Kraft Foods to "shut down thirty-nine plants, to let go [of] 13,500 workers, and to eliminate a quarter of its products... Wal-Mart has faced several accusations of, 'predatory pricing', or intentionally selling a product below cost in order to drive some or all competitors out of the market... the German High Court ruled that Wal-Mart's below cost pricing strategy undermined competition and violated the country's antitrust laws... In the United States, there are concerns on several labor issues, including low pay and inadequate health care coverage. Additionally, Wal-Mart is facing several lawsuits by current and former hourly associates who allege that the company forced them to work, 'off the clock,' or failed to provide work breaks, or otherwise claim they were not paid for work performed... There are many concerns over Wal-Mart's use of foreign labor, particularly over its failure to maintain adequate supervision over its foreign suppliers, as well as incidents of products have been made using sweatshops or alleged slave labor."
I guess if Target can match that, I'd put them up on the very same gallows...
Are you aware of what Wal-Mart's health care system consists of? In Oregon (at least for a long while), getting benefits, including health care, from Wal-Mart involved getting put on the Oregon Health Care plan. I personally can't think of a bigger drain on the state health care system
I am in a meeting today in salem. And someone asks who the leader is in Venezuela in reference to some Ecuadorian elections. I say Fidel knowing that someone would say Chavez. At which point I say, what's the difference. They are all F-ing commies. And someone in our group says, "there nothing wrong with Commies."
Oregon is pretty messed up when you have discourse like this going on.
Bryan. Get real. You know what this site is about. If you don't like it, don't read it. Same for Mike. What's so hard about that? Diverse opinions are good, but you aren't really here to discuss issues and opinions. You are just here to pee in someone's cornflakes. I am not affiliated with this site, but I can plainly see what is happening here. If you want to take a shot at Daniel's blog or the people who visit here, then you have some serious personal issues with NOT HAVING A LIFE. Fuck off, dude. Do you see me on your idiotic site, wherever that may be?
a quick note about Wal-Mart and prescription drugs... did you know that it is illegal to bring drugs into this country that were manufactured in this country but exported to a different country?
oh yes, and the top that off, those drugs are cheaper.
By the way... I want to also extend my appreciation to Daniel for all the time and effort that he puts into his blog.
maintaining a daily blog is a lot of hard work that you do did not get paid for doing.
this blog, is one of the first things I checked daily... and I for one would really miss it if Daniel ever decided to give up blogging.
I just thought I would let everyone know that I went to the Wal-Mart, in BlueJean (oops, I meant to say Eugene), on West 11th after work last night. I bought a pair of slippers and a pair of shoes.
God bless Wal-Mart....stuff I can afford to buy....
12:37 - I hope you see the irony in what you've written. Assuming Bryan's website is "idiotic" without ever having seen it is exactly the kind of thing you were trying to criticize Bryan for at the same time. Hypocrisy kills ethos.
Bryan's a 20-year-old kid still in college. He doesn't have a site because he's too busy trying to pull his GPA up, when he's not busy trying to pull other folks down.
I believe it was Churchill who noted that if you're under thirty and aren't a liberal, then you have no heart - and if you're over thirty and aren't conservative, then you have no brain.
"...when he's not busy trying to pull other folks down."
I somewhat resent that. I beleive on more than one occasion I've condemned other's personal attacks on bloggers of this site. I think a lot of the attention is being given to my earlier post on this subject. It was meant as a sarcastic post aimed at pointing out the absurdity of 1:17's comment. Obviously, I don't want anon out of Oregon any more than I want anyone else out. Anyway, I'm sorry if it was interperated as anything else other than that.
Also, if you don't attack other's viewpoints, how can you ever discover or affirm what your own are?
Also, Churchill was a good wartime leader, had an unparalleled command of the english language, but was lost politically when it came to post WWII politics.

Be prepared for a bunch of "Chavez loving communist" quotes. That's just my prediction based on the mentality of most of Daniel's audiance.
Attributed to a post by Daniel:
"We should NOT compete with Workers NOT paying Taxes or Comp or Insurance or other Labor Laws."
How about corperations not providing health care or abiding by other labor laws (Wal-Mart)?

I'd also like to see some of this stuff go away, but I'll take what I can get.
Kaelri, how are any of those concerns different than a Target opening?
...how are they different?

Did anyone see a bunch of monkeys swinging from the big cable leading up to Pill Hill?

mike and bryan, if you guys don't like it here, then why are you here? You guys are idiots. Get a life.
Anon 11:17-
Same to you. If you don't like the current state of Oregon, then get out of here. You're an idiot. Get a life.
Does anyone else see the absurdity in this?

keep up the excellent work Daniel, and thank you

"Democrats are monkeys?" Isn't that statement a little insulting to monkeys?
Daniel, thanks for great site, it's nice to see you have a little fun with some topics. If others fail to find humor in it...well what can you say.

Yeah, a lefty analyzing Churchill is like Monica Lewinski analyzing Reagan.....sheesh.
Bear-
It's not analyzation, it's history. Churchill was elected out of office right after WWII.
He did make a 10 year comeback, but was defeated by the labour party.
"Democrats are monkeys?" Isn't that statement a little insulting to monkeys?
Isn't the use of a jackass for the symbol of the Democratic party a bit insulting to the jackasses (the four-legged "hee-haw-in" kind)?
Your predecessors gave it to us. Our predecessors accepted it.
