Smith update

Here is the audio so you can hear for yourself.

Also, we have gone to businesses to hand out this flyer with the pilot program information where you can check that your employees names match their SSN. If employers don't want to use the phone number you can also check online.

My opinion: I was let down, Smith didn't show the enthusiasm that I was looking for. That being said, I am holding out hope and believe that if we continue to exert pressure we can help get this thing passed.

In related news...
175 Immigration Violators, Fugitives Arrested In OC
Immigration authorities arrested 175 "immigration violaters" in Orange County this week as part of a weeklong crackdown targeting undocumented immigrants and immigration fugitives.

According to ICE databases, there are currently 632,189 fugitive aliens [or as Bush/Snow call them: the backbone of our economy] in the United States, the release said.

Glad to see more illegal aliens going to jail/going home.

Well, summer's here, but it's still "Snowing." I heard Trent "let-em-in" Lott, Tony Snow, and El Gordo Smith make fools of themselves this week. Smith's approach was very interesting. While claiming to support the rule of law, he ignored the fact that current laws are not being enforced. He claimed to want employers to identify and refuse to employ illegals. He claimed that no mechanism exists to aid employers in instantly identifying fraudulent SSN's (an outright lie), but, if he actually believes that nonsense, where does that obviously necessary provision show up in his draft bill? Hmmm? His pretense of not supporting the amnesty bill was clear when he hesitated, then said he was "leaning against" voting for cloture (a vote for cloture means the bill passes). Smith is an anti-American, no-borders advocate. My question to him..."WHERE'S THE FENCE?!!"

Daniel,

I hope you have not fallen for Gordo's purely political antics.

He obviously sucked Lars in during the week with all the hype given Gordo's "draft bill".

Hint: If Lars continues to hype Gordo's "DB", he's clearly naive.

If Lars doesn't mention it much next week, "there's your sign", that Lars has figured it out --Gordo's political stunt.

... because it isn't enough to simply shit on Latino migrant workers. To win Daniel's heart, one must shit on them enthusiastically.

THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) - Rape charges have been filed against two men and a juvenile after a naked woman was found alongside Dry Hollow Road, southeast of The Dalles.

She was found shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday and had been reported missing from a cabin camp near a local orchard operation.

Yesterday, the Wasco County Sheriff's office arrested 20-year-old Jorge Gutierrez, 19-year-old Juan Moreno-Aurlez and a 17-year-old juvenile

Thank-you, Anon 7:51, for injecting your racism and bigotry into a blog that thrives on it. Because after all, it is simply in the nature of "these" people to murder, rape and steal. That's what they are like, all of them.

And thank-you, too, for making it clear that it really doesn't matter if they are "illegal aliens" or not. The KATU story doesn't indicate that the men are "illegal," and I am sure that if you were privy to information that they were, you certainly would have said so.

So: Given the lack of information in the only source you cite, for all we know, these guys were born in the United States, have lived here all their lives. Hell, maybe they've never even BEEN to Mexico.

But now that these two individuals have been arrested for rape, it's a helpful reminder of what Latinos are really like, isn't it? One can't be too careful around them. It helps validate your own racist views. Because they are just like that, aren't they? We don't want these people in the land of apple pie, baseball and red white and blue, do we?

Thank-you for your honesty.

To Stan 852am:

The facts are that illegal aliens have been arrested and convicted for serious felony crimes at a level disproportionate to their numbers in the general population over the last several years and seems to be rising,

OR

Is that because the overall number of illegal aliens has increased?

Whatever the case, it is unacceptable to see illegal aliens commit felony crimes(beyound their illegal entry and document fraud) against Americans and legal residents in our communities when they shouldn't be in the country in the first place.

Taxpayer funded jail space is being taken up by illegal aliens committing crime.

Stan, to turn a blind eye toward this situation as you would have us do(don't look at the man behind the curtain)is the willful ignorance necessary to support this deceptive and fraudulent(purports to do one thing and does the opposite)legislation.

Stan, yours is the last gasp racist shriek to "shut down the discussion" raised to a shrill decibel level at this time in the battle against this dangerous amnesty legislation.

When it looks too late for the bill to pass.

Now I should give you an opportunity to defend the bill.

Can you defend the bill?

Can you defend amnesty?

That's the real question.

As a regular reader of this blog, I can say without a doubt that Daniel doesn't have a problem with Latino Migrant Workers. The traditional Latino Migrant worker generally had a work visa for a set period, sponsored by a Farmer or a Farm Co-Op. What Daniel is referring to in this blog (if you've ever bothered to actually READ the blog on a regular basis) are the flood of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WHO ARE PLANNING TO STAY HERE>>>>>ILLEGALLY>>>>>>AND WHO LEECH OFF OF THE SYSTEM.

I believe Anthony has nailed it with his last statement. That is the reason I have problems with illegals. Most aren't on the farm anymore and going back to Mexico for winters. They work at burger king, have anchor babies and take free benefits. Then they get the gaul to march for legal status. That is not a migrant worker fool.

The facts are that illegal aliens have been arrested and convicted for serious felony crimes at a level disproportionate to their numbers in the general population ...

Actually, that is not a fact. It is a conclusion, a false one, arrived at by anti-immigration partisans who know little or nothing about statistics, and promoted by individuals like Daniel who know less than nothing about them. One such "study" that "proved" the assertion was cited by Daniel a few weeks ago, and it was thoroughly debunked. The statistical formula used to arrive at this "fact" you're tossing around was so transparently fraudulent, a high school student in advanced math would have seen through it.

The "study" was, in fact, cited by Miglavs within the last couple of months; I addressed it at the time. A typical expression of the alleged illegal immigrant crime spree was made last year by Rep. Ted Poe, when he said:

"We know that 25 homicides a day are committed by people who are illegally in the country."

His ridiculous and utterly false statement was refuted by Houston Chronicle columnist Rick Casey. Below is his column, which was published September 26, 2006 on page 1 of the Chronicle's metro section.

I suggest that the individual whose "argument" included the words "bitch," "scum" and "anti-American" read it very carefully:

POE PUSHES PANIC BUTTON

By Rick Casey

IT is safe to say there's a place in hell for unrepentant murderers, and I hope there is a lower rung for cop killers.

When a murderer kills a convenience-store clerk, he inflicts deep wounds on the clerk's family, friends and co-workers.

Any murder is a horrible crime.

But when a murderer kills a police officer, he inflicts that loss and more. He victimizes every good citizen.

We need the police to protect us, not to suspect us, not to feel an urge to pull their guns every time they stop us for absent-mindedly making an illegal turn.

So if Juan Quintero killed officer Rodney Johnson, he had better get right with his Maker because the citizens of Texas will want to hasten their meeting.

But in today's atmosphere, Quintero is more than an accused murderer. He is being made into a symbol of the Evils of Immigration.

U.S. Rep. Ted Poe jumped to the head of the mob that would use Quintero's alleged crime to brand many illegal immigrants as homicidal.

What `we' really `know'

"We know that 25 homicides a day are committed by people who are illegally in the country, and this is one more," he told the Chronicle.

But who is this "we" and how do "we" know that?

Tuesday morning I called Poe's communications director, DeeAnn Thigpen, to ask her the source of that statistic.

By end of day all she could come up with was that it came "from the House Judiciary Committee, based on FBI statistics." It was too late to reach either the committee or the FBI to confirm, and she was unable to provide any documentation.

Frank P. Williams III was not surprised. He and his wife, Marilyn D. McShane, are Ph.D. professors of criminal justice at the University of Houston-Downtown and authors of many books and articles on crime and the justice system.

They saw Poe's quote and became immediately skeptical. For one thing, they say, the FBI doesn't keep crime statistics based on immigrant status.

`An outlandish figure'

Second, the numbers don't add up. If Poe is correct, they say, illegal immigrants commit 9,125 homicides a year.

That would be more than half the nation's annual homicides, reported at 16,692 last year.

"This is clearly an outlandish figure and patently untrue," said Williams.

Poe's Thigpen did mention a study done by the General Accounting Office of illegal immigrants in prison. But the GAO study hardly supports Poe's number.

It found that 55,322 illegal immigrants were incarcerated in federal, state and local prisons and jails in 2003.

But only 12 percent of them were in for violent crimes - murder, robbery, assault and sex crimes.

Let's say a quarter of those were for homicide, a very high estimate based on the percentage in the general prison population for homicide. That would put the number of illegal immigrants imprisoned for such crimes at about 1,700.

According to Williams, the national average sentence for homicide (including vehicular homicide and manslaughter) is 5.9 years. So those 1,700 would represent about 288 homicide convicts per year, about 3 percent of the number Poe cites.

If Poe is right, U.S. judges and juries are mighty lenient toward homicidal illegal immigrants.

Professor Williams says Poe's statement fits into a well-established phenomenon known among sociologists as "moral panic."

"Some sensational thing happens," said Williams. "Some authority makes a claim. The claim is always exaggerated, usually tremendously exaggerated. Almost no one questions the claim."

Sure enough. I heard a radio talker citing Poe's numbers Monday.

"People then start using the claim to bolster their vested interest on the issue," continued Williams. "Then usually action is taken. People ultimately start questioning the claim, and the claim starts shrinking substantially."

Poe is a former criminal judge. He should know better.

But illegal immigration is a great election-eve issue.

It is also a huge, complex problem that demands a solution based on reality, not on an artificially induced "moral panic."

My view is that Smith is worrying about his chances for being reelected. He knows he has angered the base too many times and now he's trying to do the right thing even if he may not believe in the cause.

I've said this before and I will say it again: Smith may be far from perfect but he is still our guy.

There is also a chance that he has heard not just from his base but also from many Democrats. The illegal-immigration issue, like so called gay marriage, is really apolitical. Most people with common sense see the same way.

Immigrants less likely to commit crimes, study says

Legal and illegal immigrants are far less likely than nativeborn Americans to be incarcerated for crimes, according to a new statistical analysis of 2000 Census data.

The findings were released Monday by the Immigration Policy Center, a Washington, D.C.-based group that studies contributions by immigrants.

Researchers said their results stand in sharp contrast to widely held beliefs that immigration and criminal activity are closely linked.

Such misconceptions persist among lawmakers, the media and the general public, which undermines development of reasoned public responses to both immigration and crime, said the study’s lead researcher, Ruben Rumbaut, a sociologist at the University of California, Irvine.

Despite the data, the myth persists, Rumbaut said. “It’s almost like it’s in the DNA of American society and you can’t shake it off.”

Rumbaut said researchers found that while the population of illegal immigrants doubled since 1994 to an estimated 12 million, the nation’s violent crime rate declined 34.2 percent during the same period, as did property crime, by 26.4 percent.

Researchers also examined the ethnicity and national origin of incarcerated men, ages 18 and 39 who make up most of the prison population. The incarceration rate among the native-born U.S. population was 3.5 percent, while the incarceration rate among the foreign-born population was a far lower — 0.7 percent.

It’s unclear whether the trend holds true locally. Mesa, Chandler and Tempe police departments don’t track nationalities of those they arrest, officials with the agencies said.

However, of the nearly 3,000 Hispanics in Maricopa County jails, about 1,000 are illegal immigrants, said Sheriff Joe Arpaio. He, along with County Attorney Andrew Thomas, has been arresting illegal immigrants as human smugglers — barred by recent state law that some legislators, advocates and judges have said was meant to target “coyotes” who smuggle in immigrants.

The center’s new analysis is consistent with a series of federal studies dating to 1901 that show immigrants are less prone to criminal activity than U.S.-born residents, Rumbaut said. They tend to be on their best behavior to avoid attracting disparagement of nativeborn residents.

Still, some elected officials feel voters support their fight against illegal immigration and are proceeding with plans to further their efforts. On Monday, the Maricopa County’s Sheriff Office reached an agreement with federal officials to train local deputies to enforce immigration laws — a task that was solely the responsibility of federal authorities.

“The citizens of this county, and across the nation, want law enforcement to help in the fight of illegal immigration,” Arpaio said in a statement.

And some polls show many Americans support that.

In May, the Pew Hispanic Center released a review of several surveys showing a significant majority of Americans see illegal immigration as a very serious problem.

A month earlier, the Pew Research Center for People and the Press released a survey showing a majority of Valley residents believe most immigrants are in the United States illegally.

However, the same poll also revealed that fewer Americans today think immigrants commit more crimes than U.S.-born citizens. About 30 percent of Americans still believed that in a 2006 survey, compared with 62 percent in a 1993 poll. In an interview Monday, Arpaio said he gets thousands of e-mails from people across the nation who support his efforts against illegal immigration.

“I think that’s a good barometer for what the silent majority of this country wants,” he said. He added that it’s important to distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants. His own parents were legal immigrants from Italy. “My father came here, he never violated anything,” Arpaio said. “He opened some Italian grocery stores and made something out of himself.” On the other hand, illegal immigrants “are criminals when they get here,” because they knowingly break immigration laws, Arpaio said.

Right off the bat, I question the group who did the purported study.

The goup is clearly an open borders think tank committed to spinning numbers the open borders' way.

Census data on illegal aliens and crime are inherently unreliable simply because it goes beyound the scope of the data in the census. The census has been recognized historically as a poor source of information on illegal aliens because illeagl aliens don't particularly want to be counted. Therefore analysis is completely subject to the biases and motives of the study's authors.

In any event,

This doesn't in any way contradict the series of percentage statistics rolled out by Anthony DeLuca.

The Groaning Thunderous ripping sounds from Wahington D.C. and Belt Way environs you hear are like the boilers letting go from their fittings on the Titanic as it split and sank beneith the icy cold waves.

Such is the state when the Washington Establishment Elite is denied their manipulations of government policy that reach an Orewellian level of deception and organized disregard of the Nation's Laws.

The wailling and nashing of teeth is palpable inside the Belt Way.

But I do appreciate your laying out that study for readers.

Sad the Elite seem to care not a wit about The Rule of Law, Sovereignty, and Equality of Citizenship.

And are willing to ignore the Will of the People on an issue so important to the Nation's future.

Stunning they can be so callous to Democratic principles and traditions of this great Republic.

But hey, the facts are on the table for all to see.

Finally the mirror is being held up to the ugly face of an elite drunk on power and determined to subvert Our Nation to achieve their reckless ambitions.

As a former Law Enforcement Officer, I don't care what the criminality rate as a percentage of the studied population is. I don't care which group does which study or poll. The bottom line is this:

If American Citizen "A" is Murdered / killed / raped / assaulted/ etc.. by Illegal Alien "B"...I serves as logical that Citizen "A" would still be alive and or would have never become a victim at all had Illegal Alien "B" not been in this country to begin with. Period....end of story.

Now, count the American Citizens who have been murdered / killed / or otherwise been victimized (some with lifelong emotional scars and psychological issues) and then add to that the number of their family members who are affected by the crime as well, and you'll see where I'm coming from. Go back twenty years....add them up. The number will be amazing. I wish that I had the time and money to d the research and find out. But I guarantee that if you add up all of the murders / manslaughters ALONE it would be in the hundreds. Add to that Rape, Sexual Molestation, Sodomy, Robbery, Burglary, etc. I won't even begin with crimes that are not considered "Person" crimes. Crimes like Drug Dealing, I.D. Theft, Fraud, and the list will surely go on and on and on...

I simply don't care where they came from: Mexico, Guatamala, El Salvador, Ukraine, China, Russia, Ireland. I do care about the Americans who are victimized by the crimes commited by those who (by law) shouldn't have been here and / or allowed to stay here to begin with.
