Random musing in advance of "May Day"

When conservatives look at the American flag they see the symbol of a great country, when liberals look at the American flag... they look for lighter fluid and matches.

When CONservatives see the American flag, they see an opportunity to bash liberals. When liberals see the American flag, they see a symbol of their country that's been abused by the right wing to advance their selfish agenda.

When STUPID conservatives (there are intelligent ones, and Mr. Miglavs is not one of them) see an anarchist/asshole setting an American flag on fire, he will immediately declare that that person is representative of ALL liberals and use the incident to smear literally tens of millions of people -- revealing, in the process, the abyss of his own ignorance and the fact that he really doesn't have anything useful or serious to contribute to the cause of advancing his own political principles.

The Radical Arab Moslems don't care who of us dies first.

So lets all fight among ourselves and ignore their threat that is hidden behind the Alien Invasion.

Daniel - I think that you are confusing the word musing, which is a verb meaning "to comment thoughtfully or ruminate" with villify, or perhaps smear, both of which are more accurate to describe your post.

Perhaps "spewing" is the word he was looking for.

One thing libs DON'T look for when they see the flag, at least in Portland, is toilet paper.

Assuming they understand its use in the first place.

Oh, and anon 10:19 (what an original name, anonymous) while you're looking up definitions, you might look up the spelling of vilify

Ragg, did you even read THX's comment? Did you think about it?

I'm one of those people who didn't think about burning a flag until they tried to ban it. Yes, it's a symbol of our country, but it hasn't really meant that much to me.

It's funny, though, how people who get all huffy about burning the flag see not problem with the battle flag of a bunch of traitors, which still flies over some state capitols.

If the U.S. flag means so much to you, shouldn't you also deplore people who fly the battle flag of the Confederacy?

I'm a liberal and have burned a flag before. But not like you think. I burned it as part of a flag retirement ceremony at Arlington Cemetery in VA (it is legal to burn a flag in respect if it is poor condition). It was a very moving ceremony and one of the most Patriotic moments I have ever been witness to.

Anon 1:47: If the American flag means so little to you, maybe you ought to consider to moving to a country that has similar feelings and who would welcome you with open arms, such as Iran or Syria. But, if you decide to stay here and burn an American flag, be sure to wrap yourself up in it first.

Oh, I just love "compassionate CONservatives", suggesting that people with opposing views kill themselves.

I have no desire to burn a flag. I did briefly when the Bush I adminstration tried to divert attention from how badly they were running the country by trying to outlaw it, but it just doesn't appeal to me.

I also didn't say that I don't love my country--I do. That's why I don't like people who wave the flag of those who tried to destroy it 150 years ago. I also don't like the Bush administration taking a dump on the Constitution by bypassing the Fourth Amendment.

Anon 4:06

Do you even have a clue what the fourth amendment says?

Deb

The Fourth Amendment (from memory):

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches shall not be violated. And no warrant shall issue but upon probable cause supported by oath or affirmation."

Okay, now I'll go look it up:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Okay, I did miss that last part. Of course, it helps that I know a song that has the entire fourth amendment in it. Thomas Jefferson is credited as one of the writers of the song.

You left-wing Oregonians are Nucking Futs.

How many mainstream liberals have lit an American Flag on fire? I would love to see you back this one up with facts, Daniel. Not that I expect that you could find any. The number of flag burnings, as a form of political protest, is very, very small. But nice hyperbole, none the less.

I'll be honest, I have. Of course it was at a flag retirement ceremony.

anon 2:08. Thank you. Makes me happier knowing that I'm on the correct side of this debate. If you were on my side, I'd have to switch.

Not that I'm really that hopeful, but what makes us "fucking nuts"?

sorry.. that should have been "nucking futs"

Whenever an American flag is burned, anywhere, as an act of defiance against America, the response of the left is.....crickets.....how patriotic of you. One burned flag speaks for millions of anti-American liberals. As usual, your silence in defense of your home and your countrymen is deafening.

Anonymous said...

Whenever a Confederate Battle Flag of Treason is displayed, the response of the right is...Hip, Hip, Hooray!

This just shows that those on the right are patriotic only so far as they can use it as a political tool.

3H said...

And what is your response Bear? Talk tough 'cause it makes you look like you're patriotic?

Anonymous said...

No need to pay attention to "bear" as she is a little girl that just writes non-sense but when asked to turn out to back it up, never does. Probably just a junior high brat plunking on daddy's computer when he is at work or asleep.

Ragg,

If you are going to be a complete sticlker with grammar, here are some suggestions:

"Assuming they understand its use in the first place."

Really, Ragg, I would think that you of all people would detest sentence fragments as much as the next person. Why don't you try:

"One thing libs DON'T look for when they see the flag, at least in Portland, is toilet paper, assuming they understand its use in the first place."

Also:

"Oh, and anon 10:19 (what an original name, anonymous) while you're looking up definitions, you might look up the spelling of vilify"

Come on!

So, Daniel, I'm sure you'll post all of the pictures you took yesterday of people burning U.S. flags.
