These people are nuts

Mike,
I have read about sanctuary cities. Did you want to ask the council if we wanted to become one? If yes, we might want to put it on the agenda for the next work session in June. Or, we could ask a group like NAACP to make a proposal. What do you want to do?
Stewart

This is a city councilor casually asking if Corvallis could become a haven for criminals. He doesn't even seem to be completely aware of what he is talking about, just that this is the new liberal fad.

Hello Stewart-
I don't intend to make any proposal to the city council. What I would like to do is to have a public forum on the issue, with input from CPD about current policy on immigration issues...
...The target audience would be both the hispanic community and the "civil rights" advocacy community, in addition to policy makers like city council. We might eventually want to be a "sanctuary city," but there are probably other less radical steps we could take.
When folks who make public policy can openly discuss helping criminals I think that we have a problem in this country. Let's throw these bums out.

You know what would be neat? If we could extend this sort of thinking.

My sanctuary city?

Building permits - Hey, if you want to work on your bathroom and feel you are qualified, go ahead! No building permits necessary.

Tobacco - We value the rights of ALL members of the community, not just those with sensitive noses. We will not aid the state of Oregon in colleting cigarette taxes in any way.

Alcohol - We will not aid the OLCC in the collection of state taxes. If we can find a cheaper source, we will do so and not buy from the OLCC. This helps our customers without funding state programs with which we disagree.

Gasoline - Obviously no state taxes here. We see no need to collect taxes from the state to subsidize the illegal invasion of bike paths in our or any other sovereign city.

oh my god!.... People actually think this way?

Steve- I'm thinking about becoming a child molester.... What do you think Bob?

Bob- I'd like to ask our liberal base first, but its a great idea, and hey, if they dont like it, you can just say you're going to rehab and everything will be alright!

The Corvallis situation is typical where the HIGH cost of housing has kept the Illegal Alien problems away.

All the Corvallisites see are the hard working landscapers in their neighborhoods.

Just as in the Portland inner metro area, Corvallis is an Illegal Alien free zone.

Bring some low cost, non-student housing to the inner Citys and see what happens.

HOLY SHIT!!! Are you kidding me??? How about making the target audience...say....oh I dunno....THE CITIZENS OF CORVALLIS? The Hispanic Community will be for turning imto a sanctuary city (for obvious reasons), THe Civil Rights Groups will be for it (Because they aren't for Civil Right as much as they are for Special Rights), and lastly, let's invite the City Policy makers, just to keep 'em in the loop.

If I were in charge, any sanctuary city would not be eledgible for ANY Federal or State tax monies....not one nickle.

These two meatheads should be innundated with e-mails telling them how stupid their idea is.

American citizens were protesting a church in California because the church is helping hide illegal aliens. One of the illegal aliens, (?), sympathizers attempted to hit a patriot and he got a face full of pepper spray.

Here is a little video poking fun at the cry baby.

I've been trying to wrap my mind around a conundrum...

First off, the war death rate for US military is about half the peace-time death rate for the military under the previous Administration. However, this rate of death is "horrific," "unacceptable," "a human tragedy," "a crime against the American Soldier," and the main argument against finishing the rehabilitation of Iraq.

Now, drunk driving has been targeted here for decades as the main form of avoidable, catastrophic death for civilians in this country. Yet by all accounts I've seen, any gains made in reducing drunk driving by native born Americans is being more than compensated for by an influx of immigrants from a culture where driving drunk is more of a norm than an abberation.

Now, since the Iraq invasion and our 3,700 dead servicemen over 69,000 Americans have died from drunk drivers, according to statistics from the department of highway safety. If you're really really generous and say that only say 6% of all drunk drivers are illegal immigrants, which would be surprisingly low figure, that would mean that drunk driving illegals would have caused over 4,000 deaths during this period.

Is there outrage? Where's Code Pink when you need em?

I've seen this claim made before, and I checked it out--it's simply not true.

Imagine if a city the size of Eugene had 1000 violent deaths each year--people wsay that's outrageous and unacceptable. That's the approximate violent death rate of U.S. military serving in Iraq.

This is what the idiots in Corvallis are doing to OUR Children, claiming DUAL language Teaching in Kindergarten yet the Teacher cannot speak English and YOU are paying for it!
Experience the Brainwashing started as young as 5 yr.s old, because Spanish is a superior language and will become mandatory soon for all...

Díez Valcarcel, 30, came to Corvallis two months ago from Madrid, Spain, to teach music and Spanish at Lincoln for one year, through a program of the Spanish Ministry of Education.

As part of Lincoln School’s Spanish-English dual-immersion program, Díez Valcarcel will teach half of his classes in Spanish and half in English throughout the year.

This week, the kindergarten class was conducted, for the most part, in Spanish.

“Fuerte! Fuerte!” Díez Valcarcel called out as the children clapped to the rhythm of another selection of classical music.

A few times, when frustrated with the task of directing the kindergarteners from one activity to another, he would lapse into English.

“Scoot over,” he told a group after he’d tried several times in Spanish to ask them to sit in a circle on the floor.

His English is limited, and he struggles at times to get his point across.
____________________________
Now add this to the New U.S. History classes in Portland Schools taught via Mexico in Spanish and maybe you'll get the complete picture of what is going on here and our "Leaders" do what to stop this?

The only problem with your argument is that Iraq is a war zone, and Eugene is not. The military is voluntaring to step into harms way for the greater good. The citizens of Eugene have not volunteered to be murdered.

When a citizen is murdered, it is more or less unexpected. When a soldier is killed on the battlefield, is somewhat expected. He's is a war zone, battling it out with bad guys who want to kill him. It's tragic, however, it should not come as any suprise.

Find a better analogy.

Dear Mr. Hickey:

My children are in a dual language immersion class. It is a true joy to me to watch them become fluent in two languages. Within months they were both speaking Spanish in a conversational way, and within two years, reading and writing it with fluency. Their first year (K), they spent 80% of the day receiving their courses in Spanish, and 20% in English, in 1st grade the ratio went to 70%/30% and now, in the second grade they are spending 60% of their day in Spanish and 40% in English. They, and several of their classmates, are exceeding all expectations, in fact, their dual immersion class has more children enrolled in "TAG" (talented and gifted) than any other classroom in their school district. I credit the dual language program with facilitating this accelerated learning we are seeing in their classroom. This has been demonstrated time and time again -- kids who learn another language at an early age "prime" their brains for advanced learning. The kids in the dual language classroom are learning at a faster pace and in a more rigorous fashion than their traditional English only classmates. This is the third year our school has been offering the dual language program and it has exceeded everyone's expectations --as a parent I can only say that dual immersion language class ROCKS. I am thrilled that my children are bilingual. America is one of few nations that does not require proficiency in a second language at primary school level. This is unacceptable. Fluency in a second language is a good thing. I don't know what all the fuss is about -- maybe it's because the "second" language is Spanish. I bet their wouldn't be such a fuss if it were German, Japanese, or French.

You stated:

Can you please explain to me how exactly being bilingual is a good thing?

Simply because we are one of the few nations that doesn't require a second language be taught, (not exactly true however. Of the 120+ nations on the planet, only 32% require that secondary languages be taught in public school. And of those 32%, two thirds are in nations that oficially have adopted more than one language..Like Canada for instance.) doesn't make it a bad educational decision on our part. Simply because you don't like the idea, doesn't make it unacceptable to all.

I'll refer to the old "If everyone else jumped off of a cliff, would you?" argument that my parents always made.

But Anthony, some righties have made the absurd claim that you're safer in Iraq than in a major city in the U.S., which just isn't the case.

And the comparison to the military during the Clinton administration is false--people are comparing deaths in Iraq to total deaths in the entire U.S. military.

It's like saying the murder rate in Beirut is lower than in the U.S. because fewer people are killed in Beirut than in the U.S. Sure, but the relevant populations are much different.

Putting aside all the other nonsense in this thread, I'm frankly having a HUGE problem trying to get MY head around the dubious proposition that Anthony DeLucca and Rick Hickey even give a shit about what the people of Corvallis think. Not to suggest that you don't have your share of neo-fascist groupies there in Benton County, but I think it's fair to say that the vast majority of that city's residents are several miles to the left down the political spectrum from you guys. So spare us your indignant protestation, Mr. DeLucca -- "How about making the target audience...say....oh I dunno....THE CITIZENS OF CORVALLIS?" I don't believe you. It doesn't wash. You couldn't get yourself cast as a tree in an elementary school play with an act like that. How the fuck do you know what "the people of Corvallis" want? By your warped standards, even a Benton County Republican probably qualifies, in your vastly uninformed opinion, as a "socialist." Spare us the bullshit.

anon & bs, If you want to pay out of your pocket for your child to become bilingual, that is your business (even though the overwhelming majority of Schools not meeting standards are the bilingual schools & anon is pulling our leg(s)).
For all of us to be forced to pay for this when the schools are always so broke and the test scores are bad, is a huge waste of these little minds and our precious resources.
I have nothing against the Spanish language, but haven't you noticed that is the ONLY language being dual immersed more and more.

I would think the dominant language of America: English, would be more important for these new Students to master.

Hey needledick, I never claimed that I knew what the people of Corvallis wanted, (again, you are flying off the cuff and not reading my posts). And guess what, the City Commisioners won't know either if their 'Target Audience" are special interest groups who will no doubt overwhemingly support their proposition, and they don't involve the average citizen.

Mr. Hickey: I, like you, have preferences about how my taxes are spent, and I'm not exactly thrilled about the fact that as of today, the cost of the war in Iraq stands at more than $454 trillion, a criminal and insane misadventure that has left 3,793 American troops dead, more than 12,500 wounded and -- depending on who's doing the counting -- anywhere from 73,000 to 1 million Iraqi civilians dead. Not to mention hundreds of thousands of refugees. That's as of TODAY. I wonder what it will be tomorrow. I wonder what it will be a YEAR from now. What do you think? When do you think we'll crack 5,000 dead? Will that be enough American corpses for you to get off your "illegal alien" soapbox and talk about something that matters for a change?

That's the objective, tangible result of my tax dollars being used for something that pisses ME off. The cost for you, as near as I can tell, is that a few kids in this state will be able to speak more than one language. Horror of horrors! Will the injustices ever cease?

And Mr. DeLucca: No. You didn't claim that you knew what the people of Corvallis want. You implied that you care. And you don't. So skip it, and see if you can get through your next post without resorting to the infantilism of school-yard name-calling. As amusing as your repertoire is ("needledick" is my personal favorite), I'm unimpressed and not the least bit offended. Just embarrassed for you.

Needledick is my favorite as well, however the more you post, the more I find myself searching for more appropriate names for you. I'll be sure and let you know when I've found a "winner".

It's readily apparant that you are fairly well educated, articulate, and from what I can tell..you are well read also, so I can assure you that the name calling isn't to offend you, quite simply....it's fun and you deserve it.

As for your implication that the illegal alien issue isn't costing you a bundle in tax dollars, that again proves to me that you haven't done your research. This is apparently a pattern with you that you haven't quite figured out how to cure. I'm gonna be a champ and give you a little advise there Suzy, it's very simple:

Do your research BEFORE spouting off.

It saves you a lot of trouble, and keeps me from having to dig into my bag of four letter nick-names.

Now, I KNOW that you aren't going to "Buy" this, but I actually DO care about the citizens of Corvallis, because Corvallis lies within the borders of the United States of America, a country which I care about with a deep, honest passion unmatched by those on the "Left". (This is where I get to be a little self righteous) I have most likely done more, and given more for the greater good of my country and it's citizens than you have (pure speculation here, but I'm generally a good judge of character, and to be honest...I see you as a double talking, hypocritical little self righteous ferret). After having served my country 12 years in the military, I wen on to be a Federal Law Enforcement agent, and then a Municipal Police Officer. I continue to do volunteer work in the community where I live.

So you can cram it up your quiche-hole, there is absolutely no way I'm ever going to be embarrased talking down to a cowardly little turd like you. So there is no need for you to be embarrased for me.

Look at your life, and ask yourself "What have I sacrificed for the greater good?"

I may be wrong, but I'd put money on the self righteous Ferret thing.

....LETS SEE, WHAT DO I WANT TO DO WITH MY TAX DOLLARS....12 million dollars a day for Iraq or 12 million dollars a day for education? Hmmmmmmmmm.....Iraq: no WMDs, no Osama, no real hope of lasting democracy, no chance of EVER becoming the "Christian" nation of my wet dreams...OR education: kids, that like it or not, for better or worse until the Constitution is amended, ARE U.S. citizens and probably WILL live here permanently, and whom I WILL be depending on to support me in my older ages (social security), should I spend my tax dollars to give them a first rate education on a par with the upper "32%" of the rest of the world, to try new and innovative ways of learning like the proven benefits that learning a second language brings to a child's ability to learn across the board. Ummmmmmm...NO, I think I'll pick $12 million dollars a day on Iraq, Pat.

The thing is "rick hickey," a goodly part of that tax money is from my pocket too, and the pockets of people who think the same way I do....so, next time your fuming about YOUR tax dollars being spent on educating little "Mexican" kids, just imagine that YOUR tax money (and the tax money of people who think like you do) is being spent on stuff YOU GUYS like (war, defense, corporate welfare, imaginary fences and bridges to nowhere, etc...) and OUR (meaning your fellow tax-paying lefties) tax money is being spent on stuff WE like (education for ALL children, milk for babies, tuition assistance, feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, health care for all, etc....) Its OUR tax money too, and if the polls are right, there are just as many of US as there are of YOU.

I've got no reason to "pull your leg," about the impressive success of my children's elementary school. If you would like, I'll give you the name and you can look them up for yourself, their success with language immersion and exceeding "NCLB" requirements has been spotlighted in the news.
Being bilingual has immense benefits, some are obvious, others are not. I'm was refering to the benefit that isn't so obvious, namely the higher learning ability of a child who is fluent in two languages. Research bears this out...excuse my layman's terms but something happens to the brain's ability to learn at a higher level when a second language is introduced at an early age. It somehow "primes" the brain for more efficient learning. This is well documented and the research is easy to find on the internet. My children ARE learning English and so are their fellow classmates who began the immersion program as primarily Spanish speaking. In two short years, both sets of kids are fluent in BOTH languages and are scoring HIGHER than their English only counterparts. Sorry, I am not "pulling your leg," though I am sure you wish I were since this information probably doesn't jive with your "talking points."
As far as YOUR tax dollars being spent in MY school district, I don't think so....in fact, my school district gets by on significantly LESS tax dollars than much of the rest of Oregon, thanks to the current school funding set up. I agree with "anonymous": it seems half of the nation is to "the left" and half is to "the right" according to statistics - so imagine that you and your friend's tax money is being spent on the kinds of things that you guys get excited about and the tax money that me and my friends are paying gets spent on the stuff we like. Feel better now? You should, since the tab for your crap costs WAY more than the tab for ours. I like it when MY TAX MONEY is spent on education, and yes, it's MY TAX MONEY TOO.

Talk about Bullshit Police spreading the bullshit with a shovel this time. I mean does anyone have a basic simple grasp of numbers any more?

Bullshit police - According to him, the cost of the Iraq war is $454 trillion.

The Federal Budget now stands at $3 trillion annually.

So, we are to believe that the cost of the war, according to BP, is roughly equivalent to the budget of the entire federal government for 150 YEARS.

Now..... that's some real bullshit. The sorry thing is Bullshit police is such a blind follower, he never even thought about the $454 trillion figure. It was just a real big number that fit in with the I hate Bush/America view and thus he spewed away.

As for the sanctimonious tone of BP et. al. please spare me. The last thing you guys care about is Iraqi lives lost. No one out there thinks it will be anything but a blood bath if we leave. When all those bodies are being moved by bulldozers into the burial pits, where will you be? Will you be up there taking responsibility for urging our withdrawal? I didn't see any of the self righteous taking credit for Cambodia or Vietnam the last time around. I highly doubt I will see the self righteous stand up this time, when it happens all over again.

I love the whole Education vs. Iraq discussion... seriously. With zero military activity overseas, do you seriously think that would have any effect on our school system?

Hell, money doesn't have any effect except to make the school system stop threatening us with substandard children til the next election cycle. Our public schools are horrid because they are all about unions, employees, and administrators trying to safeguard their salaries, benefits, and positions for the next budget period. The children are simply a "product", and since there's really no competition to provide the service (Portland school budgets have risen while their student population has sharply dwindled, demonstrating that they are completely removed from the supply and demand equation), there's no reason to provide more than the minimum they can get away with...

Yet, this discussion is about sanctuaries. A sanctuary is a place a person can be "safe" in.. and in this case, the safety is from the Evils of United States Law.

I know that illegal entry is a misdemeanor and not a felony. The reason being that the penalty for the misedemeanor is to be turned over to immigration and removed from the country, thereby eliminating the offender. A felon would most likely have to be housed and cared for by the government during his prison sentence. However, perhaps it's time to make a new class of federal felony, one that allows for the deportation of violators, and would clearly denote the willful violation of immigration laws by local governments to constitute aiding and abetting.
