This is America. I'll speak any freakin language I want. Do not tread on me.

Interesting choice of image ... Uncle Sam is traditionally seen as the "face" of the federal government, so here we have "conservative" Daniel Miglavs expressing his desire that the government tells its citizens what language they must speak. This from a "conservative" who, on any other occasion, would bitch and moan about "social engineering" by the "libs" in government.

Welcome to Miglavia.

Fuck you Uncle Spam!!! You better tend to those 4000 dead American Soldiers.

Anonymous said...

In the Real World, we've just passed the 4,000-Americans dead mark in the war in Iraq, the cost of which is well over $500 billion. (Note to Daniel: That's tax dollars we're talking about.)

In Miglavia, Daniel Miglavs frets that not everyone in a country of over 300 million people speaks the same language he does.

Welcome to Miglavia.

People! Daniel is just trying to bait you into posting on his blog by spewing more of his borderline racist bullshit. Stop giving him what he wants.

I mean, come on. As an indicator of this guy's ego: after an absence of three or four days he comes back to calm his anxious horde, letting them know the bullshit will continue. "Don't worry. I'm still here."

Give me a break.

Just walk away people. There really is NOTHING to see here.

BIG VICTORY for the American culture-GENO'S Philly Cheese Steaks CAN require customers to "Speak American when ordering"!!!

Hundreds of years of Immigrants coming here and wanting to speak English, But the Hispanics want us to become Bilingual and Bicultural? And they didn't ask to come, they paid a Drug dealer to be snuck in.
And they fled their Hell hole for what? To NOT change their ways?
And some of you think it is Racist to ask everyone to speak the language so we can communicate?

your ignorant name calling is wearing thin and no longer effective.

Anon 1016: I've been saying that for quite a while now and all I get is crap from the goofy anons who post here, even though they dislike Daniel for what he stands for. Maybe they would like him better, as well as the rest of us, Bear, Bobkatt, to name a couple, if we were to fall under their dubious spell. Yet they continue to hang on here, with just one apparent purpose: To spew out their hate for everything Daniel and the rest of believe. Maybe they get off on continuing with their endless diatribes. Who knows?

Or cares?

Anon 923: Go ahead and speak any language you want to, whether it be Spanish, English, or Farsi.

But, even you should admit that English is, while not the "official" language of the U.S., it is the language that 99% of the country speaks, despite the seemingly uncontrolled influx of the illegal alien criminals who come here with just two obvious goals - to find work thereby putting the U.S. born, law abiding citizens out of work, and to change our country and our way of life to suit themselves. And they are being aided and abetted by a whole lot of people who are nothing more than dopey apologists of the illegals' actions and agendas.

Scottiebill - I have a few honest questions.

First:

"illegal alien criminals who come here with just two obvious goals - to find work thereby putting the U.S. born, law abiding citizens out of work,"

Are you aware that this is simply untrue? The overwhelming amount of research examining this very question has found that illegal immigration does not affect the employment or wages of the native-born. Rather, they meet low-skilled labor demand in sectors of the economy in which native-born persons choose not to work, probably because the jobs are dirty, dangerous, low-paying and have few opportunities for upward advancement. If you are aware of this fact, then why do you lie?

Second:

"and to change our country and our way of life to suit themselves."

How do you know this? Did you do a survey of the cultural intentions of illegal immigrants? Or do you rather assume that the sentiments of illegal immigrants are represented by fringe radical-leftist groups that want to take over America? If it's the latter, can we then assume that the agenda of the KKK properly represents your own viewpoints?

Furthermore, what exactly are immigrants changing in this country? Granted, most first generation immigrants speak little English. Few do. But research shows that their children are thoroughly billingual, and their grandchildren overwhelmingly monolingual English. So what, precisely is changing so much that it gives you such great concern? Do you dislike Mexican food? Do you think that tejano music should be kept off of the airwaves? Is it that you loathe pressing 1 for English? Is it that hard?

Finally:

It appears that the North American Free Trade Agreement has made it harder for most Mexicans to make a living, thus increasing the likelihood that they will choose to immigrate illegally into the United States in order to do so. Why then aren't the anti-illegal immigration groups vociferously demanding that we end NAFTA?

Actually, there is no problem with the sign. You can write what ever you want. Even a "Whites Only" sign can be displayed which I am sure makes you bigots pretty happy. However, if someone goes into his shop and doesn't speak english, like say a tourist from Hungary, or even a deaf mute, the shop owner can be sued for discrimination.

The "right to refuse service" motto is actually nothing but an empty phrase and has been challenged in court around the nation.

I tell you what. If I lived in that town, I would go into the grimy little puke's resturaunt speaking using sign language or better yet Klingon, pointing to what I wanted on the menu. Then when the scumbag refused me service, I would own that greasy spoon. I would then bulldoze it and turn it into a day labor site.

I do have a friend that moved there recently. I told him about the story and he might go into the joint to see what kind of service he can get. This might be a great case for the ACLU to take on.

I agree with Scottiebill. If all the anonymousness'sdon't like what Daniel was posting, then why keep hanging out here. Why keep putting Daniel down for expressing his opinion.

Daniel's point is quite clear... illegal aliens are just that, "illegal" and they should not be here, end of story.

it has nothing to do with other immigrants.

just like you, Daniel is free to express his opinion. And as the administrator of this blog, he has every right to filter other peoples opinions which he chooses not to.

But go ahead... keep complaining about Daniel... and enjoy the Kool-Aid.

I agree. Attention, all caucasions who are descendents of "illegal aliens" who came here from Europe (white "anchor babies," in other words) ...

BACK ON THE BOAT!!!

From Tuesday's Eugene Register Guard: the Douglas Narcotics Team stopped a car on I-5 on March 18 and arrested a Eugene man. ...luggage inside the car contained 2 1/2 lbs. of crystal meth. Arrested and held on drug charges and immigrations and customs enforcement hold was Javier Zazueta, 26.
Yeah, I know that more legal citizens deal in meth than illegals but the fact remains, he shouldn't have been here.

Hey Anon. 3:38,

It was the ACLU that took Geno to court. They LOST....

Geno's grandfather was a LEGAL immigrant, who learned to speak American. He came here, started his business and the rest is American History.

Anonymous said...

Once Scumbag Geno refuses service then he can be sued for discrimination. Having a sign posted is not in violation of anything. Until the sign is acted upon, then there is a case. You wait, Geno will be out of business soon enough if he tries to be a wize guy. If he is smart, he will just let the sign be what it is NOTHING.

Rooster:

"Geno's grandfather was a LEGAL immigrant, who learned to speak American."

Geno's grandfather (actually, I think you mean Joey Vento's grandfather; Joey is the owner of Geno's Steaks and Geno is his son), who presumably hailed from Italy, arrived at Ellis Island during the great European migration of 1880-1920. At this point in American history, there was no such things as numerical quotas on immigration from Europe (or Mexico, for that matter). Thus, it was IMPOSSIBLE to come as an illegal immigrant. Therefore, that Joey's grandfather came legally is no great feat. How could he have come any other way?

Also, if you had done any reading at all on our European immigrant ancestors (for example, Nancy Foner's "From Ellis Island to JFK") you would know that hardly any Italian immigrants learned to speak English. Rather they concentrated in Italian neighborhoods, speaking only Italian, much to the chagrin of the Anglo-Saxon nativists of that era.

You know, it's really remarkable that a group of people affiliated with an organization like Oregonians for Immigration Reform apparently know very little about immigration. Take, as an example, Scottiebill, who bloviates condescendingly about illegal immigration until someone asks him a few simple questions about his views and thoughts on the matter that seem to run contradictory to his arguments, at which point, silence.

The reason that nativists will always be at odds with immigration policy makers is because the latter have to actually contend with the fact that illegal immigration is actually a very complex issue with major implications for American fiscal, economic, social and foreign policies, rather than a black-and-white matter of legality.

Take heart nativists. At least you'll have something to bitch about for the foreseeable future.

Rooster and Anon 10:15 --

Speak "American?" Um, don't you mean English? There is no such language as "American."

Pathetic.

Dearest "English" speakers: Before you criticize those who do not speak English, perhaps you should learn to properly speak and write the english language yourself.

Anon 10:16 --

Your IGNORANCE is wearing thing.

There hasn't been a single large ethnic group of immigrants who "wanted" to learn to speak "American" and "change their ways." All of them, beginning with the Germans, segretated themselves and resisted learning the enlish language and "assimilating" for decades after their arrival. Case in point: the Germans. They created their own towns, schools, churches, banks and publishing houses, much to the chagrin of none other than Ben Franklin:

“In a few years, [Pennsylvania will] become a German colony; instead of their learning our language, we must learn theirs, or live as in a foreign country.”

-- Benjamin Franklin, 1751

And by the way, smartie pants, the Supreme Court didn't give "Geno" the right to require that all his customers speak English. They only affirmed his right to display the sign. Period. Big difference.

Bobkatt said...

The Supreme Court/government doesn't give anybody any rights. They can only take them away.

Anon 1153: You are accusing me of "bloviating" about illegal immigration, getting asked a couple of questions, the tone of which I find to be condescending and insulting, and then "silence". First: About my silence - I was out of town for a couple of days and just got back late last night and had no access to a computer while I was gone. I'm sorry if I did not ask your permission to leave town, but I really didn't think I had to.
Second: I see illegal immigration just as I wrote. Obviously there are some illegals who come here with honorable intentions in mind, but I believe for the most part they are here for the reasons I stated. If that goes against your idea of why they are here, then fine, That is your privilege. But do not attempt to denigrate anyone who disagrees with you. Because that just makes us look better, and makes you look like a fool.

Apparently the word "illegal" is not in your vocabulary. You should try looking it up in your Funk and Wagnalls sometime.

Scottiebill!

Welcome home! Just got back last night? No computer access while away? Bummer.

Hey, guess what, someone must have stolen your identity (probably an illegal immigrant) because while you were out of town, someone logged in and posted as "scottiebill" under the union post yesterday around noon.

Either that, or your a liar.

As for the rest of your comments, I don't see much point in trying to have a discussion with someone who doesn't tell the truth.

Do you?
