I don't even know where to begin

Clinton Street Bike Boulevard Enhancement Project.
Artists and artist teams from the Portland metropolitan area are invited to submit qualifications for a collaborative transportation safety-based public art project with the Portland Office of Transportation - the Clinton Street Bike Boulevard Enhancement Project. The total project budget is approximately $70,000.
Project Scope
The overarching objective of this project will be let to people know that they are on a street
prioritized for use by cyclists and other non-motorized users.
Ideal Artist Candidate
Ideally, applicants should have experience with and awareness of Portland’s unique bicycle culture.
$70k on public art... to let commuters know they aren't welcome... on Clinton street... I think that my head is going to explode.
I'm very willing to subscribe to a newspaper that will do a front page story on how much Oregon spends on public art relative to the rest of the country. For more reasons why we can't open the Wapato jail/fix streets/etc visit the RACC website.

Welcome to Miglavia, which is located in Oregon, a state that devotes a greater percentage of its revenue to corrections than any other state in the union and one of five states that spends more on corrections than higher education. Yet, the Miglavians still piss and moan that it's not enough.

I don't know where to begin, either.

1) The Regional Arts & Culture Council gets its money from a LOT of sources, many of them wealthy private foundations. It's not just tax dollars.

2) Would you prefer that the money be spent on private art? Say, in someone's living room?

3) Since you object to public art, I assume that Mount Rushmore really pisses you off. Or would I be correct to assume that you're one of those dreamy-eyed knuckleheads who would like nothing more than to see the face of your Supreme Commander, the Idiot Ronald Reagan, carved next to Washington himself?

4) What is it exactly that you object to? The "public" aspect, or art in public at all? Would you prefer that Portland look like anywhere/nowhere? Like Sherwood, for example?

5) Interesting timing, your post. Yesterday the news (except FOX "News," anyway) was that a former chief economist for the World Bank and a Nobel laureate is estimating that the cost of the Iraq war is $3 trillion dollars. TRILLION. But here you are, going for some really big game: A $70,000 art project in a city you don't even live in on a street you probably never use. I think MY head is going to explode.

I could go on, but it just hit me -- you don't give a shit. Silly me.

Portland never has enough money to keep police precincts open 24/7 or to fill in potholes in the streets or to maintain the bridges properly, but they always seem to have enough money for stupid projects like this. And if cars aren't welcome on Clinton Street, how are the residents on that street supposed to get to their homes?

It looks like the ham-handed antics of Eric Sten, Sam Adams, and Randy Leonard are in effect again. To say nothing of Tommy the Immune and his left-handed version of Portland government.

Miglavians never aim at big targets. That would require brains and balls, which they lack. I'm surprised the $70,000 Clinton Street project even showed up on Daniel's radar ... I would have thought he'd be running around with his little camera, trying to catch someone serving and/or eating tamales and refried beans at a school, park, etc. Not that racism and xenophobia have anything to do with it, of course.

Hey Miglavs - Last time I checked, we were living in what's called a "democracy". In case you haven't noticed, the type of people that predominate in Portland are those who tend to like art and a bike-friendly urban core. I think you call them liberals. I'm pretty sure that the majority of residents in Portland are happy to see some of their tax dollars spent on public art.

Majority rules. Get it?

If you don't like it, why don't you move to Idaho...and take Lars Larson with you.

Would this project pass on a ballot? I think people would look at the deep pot holes on their neighborhoods streets and say hell no!

Government needs to get its priorities straight and choose infastructure over fluffy feel good projects.

The natives are getting restless and will start voting down every money issue on the ballot as they see more and more of this type of project over police protection and taking care of the real city business.

How about spending that 70k on a streetsweeper or a pressure washing machine and hiring some bum off of the streets to clean the sidewalks every morning?

It might help to attract business if the normal person who comes from a clean neighborhood does not have to be confronted with filth every time they go to downtown Portland. Why bother? If I want to look at bums and filth on the street I can watch any movie filmed in the 1970's in NY city.

In Miglavia, $70,000 for a public art project: Bad. Don't even know where to begin. Head might explode.

$3 trillion spent (so far) on a bullshit war: Not a problem. Not worth mentioning. Not of interest. Move along. Nothing to see.

Welcome to Miglavia.

Well, gee whiz, jestin, I'm flattered by your attention. Those families fleeing the filth, crime, lousy schools, moronic city and county governments, and stupidly high taxes of the cities must all do what? Put up with your garbage and allow our families to remain at risk? L.O.L.!

The city of Detroit, Michigan had the highest per capita income in the U.S.. It now ranks #62. Its population was 1,800,000. Its population now is about 900,000. The dropout rate is 68%. Why, jestin? Because all the "cowards" moved as far away as they could get, once the liberals took over.

I don't hate anyone, jestin. And I don't have to subject my family to living in proximity to foulmouthed, dropout thugs. (That's liberals, to you lefties out there.) If the democrat party wants to ignore community safety and education in order to promote an idiotic and wasteful agenda, good. I won't help them. If they murder each other daily, so be it. I'll stand back and laugh at their arrogant mutterings about multi-culturalism, diversity, and how smart they are, while they kill each other. How civilized of them.

You folks made your bed, and seem to think I'll come along and clean it for you. Fix it yourself, smart boy.

I'll say it again, jestin. Every time a criminal, or other liberal is killed, good. It saves my ammo for hunting food.

Um...I don't think Idaho would be too good of a fit for Daniel anymore. That's where I'm from.

Particularly the Boise area -- there's LOTS of public art and there is a very active program that funds public art projects on a regular basis...pretty much every year there's a couple of pieces going up throughout the Boise metro area.

The Boise metro area also boasts one of the nation's finest liberal arts colleges, and it's presence is felt throughout the Treasure valley thru various community programs and a very active arts outreach program.

In addition, the whole of Idaho is in the throws of a very rapid change from a red state to a blue state. Daniel wouldn't be too welcome in Idaho anywhere but maybe the southern third.

The ultimate price tag for Iraq, according to a growing consensus among analysts seems to be falling in the 7 TRILLION dollar area.

Daniel and his buddies seem to think that they are the ONLY ones who pay taxes. Of course, they're NOT. This tax payer, and millions of others like me, and you, Anon
1050, are MORE THAN HAPPY to see that OUR tax dollars are spent on the welfare of this nation's children and art for our collective enjoyment.

Jesus, Bear, what city are you talking about? Portland? It's got some bad neighborhoods, yes, but all large cities do. It's consistently ranked one of the nicest places in the country to live, for God's sake. Where were you living? In a dumpster in an alley behind a gangbanger's house in NE?

Besides, if you're basing your impression of Portland -- or anywhere, for that matter -- on the nightly news, then you seriously need to pull your head out of your ass. Local TV news is ALL about crime and ratings. That's ALL they do. They could make a utopian commune sound like South Central LA if they wanted to. Turn off your TV or you'll go insane.

Anonymous said...

...and conservatives keep molesting children and trying to hide it. No wonder they leave the city for more rural-remote areas of Oregon. Has anyone ever pondered the fact why conservative homeschool their children? I watched a news special a few months ago about the high rate of child molestation and homeschooling.

BEAR said...

anon 9:09, let's stick to the topic of Mr. Daniel's post first. In any city faced with quality of life issues, as all large cities are, does politically motivated "art" take precedence over public safety, or education? I don't believe it does. I place "art" in quote marks because one person's "art" is another person's propaganda.

When large cities and counties, invariably driven by liberal governments, siphon tax dollars from public safety, infrastructure and education, in order to finance their utopian fantasies (light rail, trams, bike paths and art), we see a corresponding increase in violent crime, economic decline, high dropout rates, and families evacuating the resulting chaos. By all means, please refute my example of the city of Detroit, or the democrat controlled failure known as New Orleans.

For liberals to excuse their own abject failures by claiming that every democrat controlled large city is no better reveals the intellectual bankruptcy of their political philosophy.

You wonder whether or not I live in a dumpster in a back alley behind a gangbangers house in NE Portland. Why is that gangbanger's house allowed to exist in the first place? The fact that there are THOUSANDS of gangbanger's houses allowed to exist in Portland speaks volumes re the wisdom of detouring precious tax dollars to politically motivated "art".

You cite the media as capable of creating the impression that "pristine" communities can be made to look as degenerate as "South Central LA". The media cannot disguise the FACT that Portland residents in NE must put up with multiple "shots reported" calls to 911 EVERY night.

The simple fact that you can refer to South Central LA as a definition of societal violence and chaos emphasizes my point. It does not refute it.

You libs can't even begin to acknowledge the problems you create, let alone fix them. Instead you excuse the bad guys, and blame Conservatives.....sheesh.

The libs keep failing?

Earth to Bear: There's been a Republican in the White House for nearly EIGHT years. Republicans in Congress for nearly as long. A right-wing Supreme Court; the radio airwaves DOMINATED by right-wing hosts. You're a veteran (you claim) so tell us: How's that war in Iraq working out? Or won't the libs "let" us win?

Please respond, Bear. Say anything. I could use a laugh.

Republican Sex Scandals Dwarf Those of Democrats

Perspective by Tim King Salem-News.com

The sexual antics of President Bill Clinton have been a dangerous tool in the Republican campaign arsenal, used to the fullest possible extent, but what have they been up to all these years?

(SALEM, Ore.) - "He who lives in a glass house should not throw stones." It seems that old adage may be lost on the confused mass that we call modern society. The Grand Old Party, once known for controversial abolitionists, has become the moral party of today, or so their elected leaders will tell you.

As we evolve as a nation, too many people seem to be clinging to ideologies that make little sense, fighting against a woman's right to abortion while demanding that schools not teach children sex education or instruct them in the deadly virus, AIDS. It creates a vicious circle when we fight ourselves, and deny education to those who need it most.

Our nation spent more tax money conducting Ken Starr's investigation of President Bill Clinton's affair with intern Monica Lewinsky, than they did in the investigation of the September 11th 2001 attacks on the United States. Many Americans fail to see the logic behind this.

Now Oregon's Governor stands at risk, as a right wing radio pundit named Lars Larson levels an accusation against Kulongoski that could mean he could not be a lawyer in Oregon again. Larson says that Kulongoski had the goods on Goldschmidt years ago. Sources are reporting that he could have known about what has become known as the Goldschmidt scandal, as early as 1994.

Kulongoski walked angrily out of a press conference Tuesday, after a TV reporter asked him about the former governor's involvement with the teenage babysitter.

Perhaps the Governor is guilty of having known something he didn't tell. He stated that he is not, but if he is, he may lose his right to have a license to practice law. That would be a real burn if you were Ted Kulongoski, and quite a feather in the cap of Lars Larson, no doubt about it.

As Lars Larson is totally political in his pursuits and ambitions, we thought it would be interesting to offer perspective by determining just how many Republican lawmakers and officials have endured similar scrutiny in recent years for sexual perversions, extramarital affairs, etc. It is a hard number to pinpoint, it just depends on the number of years you account for.

As a subject, it was important enough to see an impeachment of former President Bill Clinton, so fair seems fair.

Then we ran into a problem with the idea of naming these scandals and their Republican perpetrators; there are so many they would hardly fit on the page. Using data from "Moral Values," these citations are otherwise attributed to the original agencies. Here is a partial list of names of serious problems related to GOP movers and shakers.

Hey retard, we live in a Republic, not a democracy. This is why 3/4 of the house majority is required to pass laws, or amend the constitution in this country, rather than a simple 50% + 1.

Majority doesn't rule like you stated. Overwhelming majority rules.

Not only that, but do you think that this project would pass (even by 51%)if the voters got the chance to vote on it? Probably not.

Thank-you, Professor Anthony "FBI/INS Statistical Report" DeLucca. So, to conclude our lesson: The reason the Miglavian Project will fail is that Miglavians have staked out such far-right extremist positions on so many things that they will never be able to get their way on much of anything, and they will always be unhappy with society, because the -- how did you put it? -- overwhelming majority will nearly always be against them. For example, Daniel can't even get a supermajority here in Miglavia. He and his fellow Miglavians are frequently outnumbered here. On his own blog!

This concludes today's lesson on Miglavia.

Despite Mexicans' traditional sympathy for the Democrats, Senator John McCain also has plenty of supporters south of the border, because of his track record on immigration. Hillsboro cops arrest two in beer bottle incident

Categories: Breaking News, Washington County
Two Hillsboro men were arrested and at least three remain at large after a spate of beer bottle and rock throwing incidents Saturday night.

Lt. Michael Rouches, Hillsboro police spokesman, said Antonio Estrada, 20, and Roberto Carlos Tena, 22, were arrested on accusations of criminal mischief, harassment, assault and robbery.

Rouches said police were called to All-Star Sports Bar near Southeast Second Avenue and Washington Street about 8:45 p.m.Saturday after a group of five or six men threw a beer bottle at the bar's bouncer. The bottle missed but broke a window. The suspects fled in a dark-colored Mazda sports utility vehicle,

About five mintues later, police received a call of shots fired in the area of Southeast 13th Avenue and Maple Street. The suspects, the call said, fled in a dark-colored SUV. No shell casings or weapons were found.

Police then responded five minutes later to a call that suspects in a dark SUV were throwing rocks and a beer bottle at a woman in the area of Southeast 13th and Walnut Street, a block from the shots-fired call.

While investigating, police were flagged down by a man who said his backpack was stolen by suspects in a similar vehicle near 12th and Southeast Baseline Street.

After the arrests, the crime spree stopped, Rouches said

I guess you missed the Wingnut who called Michelle Obama a c**t. That's the one that comes immediatley to mind. Of course, you assume all anons are liberals but you're so, so wrong on that.

Spend an hour digging through some archives, Mr. Then you come on back here with a straight face (so to speak) and tell us that the nasty liberals on this blog are the biggest offenders regarding foul language.

Oh, lookie here, you might not need to spend an hour afterall, there's one right on the thread, a real pre-pubescent gem: Anon 907.

You're a real crack-up, Max.

Governor Neil Goldschmidt's driver? Did you vote for him and Ted K.? Do you always vote DemocRATs, the criminals who get voted in again and reelected and rewarded with powerful positions for covering up the rapes like Ted K?

Hey Anon 9:07: Why don't you just come out and say directly what you think about the Oregurinal instead of beating around the bush about it?

Scott, I hear ya, bra. I have avoided that piece of shit for so long, but it's like I can't get away from it. I subscribed to the New York Times about 7 years ago. After about 3 months, I got rid of it. I am sure no explanation is needed here. At any rate, who the fuck gives 13 weeks free delivery of a supposed major metropolitan newspaper? You gotta be pretty fucking desperate to do that.

So I open it up today and what do I see in there? Two phaegs in Vancouver who are in need of greater domestic partnership protection. Normally, I'd let this run-of-the-mill crap slide by, but this story involved some phaeg who used to be a guy and who later had a sex change operation. He is now with a woman, and they want legal protections as a couple.

It's beyond fucked up. So here's my question. Are they really gay or are they so desperate to prove their gayness that the dude went and had a sex change operation? lol

Either way, who gives a fuck about their serious dysfunction? I don't, but to use a fucked up "couple" like this to get your point across about Washington Domestic Partnership laws??? I mean, really, this is some sick and disgusting shit, and certainly nothing that I give a shit about or remotely impacts my life. But these mother fuckers want it to impact my life by forcing that shit down my troat. Well, hey, mother fuckers, FUCK YOU. I don't give a fuck. Fuck off.

Etc., etc., etc. Blah, blah blah.

Look I am a conservative, and I do not mind public art...but I do live right on Division St. (one street over for those of you who don't know)and before considering making Clinton an even more bike friendly route, how about fixing Division's surface. Also ban bike traffic from 60th or so, to OMSI on Division and make it a Car Friendly Road in lower SE.

anon 107:

Nice post.

If homosexuality doesn't impact your life, as you claim, then why are you so bent out of shape about a story about a gay couple?

Homophobic prick!

Anonymous said...

Actually, I am not homophobic, why? Because I don't give the first shit about phaegs or dykes. Do whatever you want, just leave me the fuck out of it, which is precisely my point, you fucking douchebag. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on you fucking freak.

anon 1045 - Wow, you're pleasant. Did you just recently learn the f-word? Even by the pathetically low standards here in Miglavia, your posts are incredibly offensive.

The lovely words you use to describe homosexuals suggests , contrary to what you say, that you have a pretty low opinion of gay people, and that you are apparently troubled enough by it to take the time and effort to hammer out those eloquent posts of yours.

Can I ask you this: How does allowing gays to marry impact your life in any way?

Learn to read, assbrain. I don't give a fuck about phaegs and dykes. I told you that. In fact, I don't have a problem with Civil Unions. You shouldn't have gone about it this way, however. You should have put it on the ballot. Instead, you lose M36 and then you pull this crap in the legislature. If I were to vote NO on civil unions, it would be for this reason, not because I have a problem with phaegs being phaegs, etc.

Dear Phaegs and dykes, be ghey all you want, just don't try to bring me in the room to watch.

Dear Idyeat:

You've got two legs that move or don't move. You've got two eyes that open and shut. Who's forcing you to walk into "that room?"
Who's forcing you to "watch?"
