Anchors away!

58% Say No to Citizenship for Children of Illegal Immigrants
Fifty-eight percent (58%) of U.S. voters say a child born to an illegal immigrant in this country should not automatically become a citizen of the United States, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

What a coincidence! That is also what the law says: All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

Thirty-three percent (33%) disagree and say if a women enters the United States as an illegal alien and gives birth to a child here, that child should automatically be a U.S. citizen.

The illegal alien enablers must be feeling a huge setback on this one since shows an overwhelming majority disagree with the current interpretation of the 14th amendment and the status quo.

Maybe parents are tired of hearing the schools cry poverty while going out of their way to include the Spanish language and Mexican culture in everything they do.

Maybe patients are tired of being in the maternity ward and realizing that a majority of folks in there don't speak English and aren't paying for the hospital visit.

Or maybe everyone is just tired of children being used as a political wedge to argue for amnesty for parents.

The constitution says that if you're born here, you're a citizen. If you want to deport the US-born children of illegal immigrants, you have to change the 14th amendment. I think we can agree on the facts of the situation, can't we?

Actually, the 14th amendment was written to protect the offspring of former slaves, not illegal aliens. As such, it is subject to legal interpretation; change may not be required.

I'm aware of its purpose. But the language is not ambiguous. You don't have to be a constitutional scholar to interpret the words "all persons," "born," and "citizen". If the anchor-baby loophole is to be closed, the amendment must be changed. As of now, it is a constitutional right, and it takes more than the majority of an opinion poll to strip an American citizen of his or her rights - as it should be.

Kaelri- I read this poll as an endorsement for changing the 14th amendment. We can all agree on what the amendment says but disagree as to whether it was meant to apply to children of parents that are here illegally. Max makes a good point as to why the amendment was adopted in the first place and to apply it to children of illegal parents is a farce. That said it should have been changed 50 years ago. No one is suggesting stripping a citizen of their rights because of a poll.

Kaelri, This will have to be looked at by the Supreme Court. I believe all states determine who their citizens are. Maybe the states will have to determine the legality of the anchor babies. Interesting times. I'm hoping they will all leave like in AZ where mexico is helping the children reclaim their citizenship. I think the days of massive criminal aliens running around this country will soon start to end.

Unemployment up, economy down. It's time for them to leave.

I would love to see the Repubicants try to change the 14th Amendment. Think they already have problems now with their bad image from before and now with their racist teabagger friends like Rand Paul.

Maybe the anti-immigrant groups can try to push the GOP into promising this in the coming election. Please do, by all means.

The key words in that amendment are "and subject to the jurisdiction of."

If you are here illegally, you have not sworn allegiance to the U.S. Thus you are not subject to the jurisdiction of the U.S. and the 14th doesn't apply.

Anon 1:19, per this and many other polls, we can only hope that the GOP would push for this and pass laws that americans want for once.

Don't worry as they can't here in Oregon knowing that illegal's can and do vote here, they could un elect tham all and are.

In the other 25 states that respect US citizenship, the GOP can actually do what the citizens want and we hope will.

We are all sick of illegals hijacking the "rights" given to deserving former africans, forced to come here and treated horribly, unlike illegals who volunteered to sneak into here.

After Dying or being maimed for life defending our nations borders our Forefathers NEVER imagined that our borders would not be secured from invasion in the future.

PER local jurisdiction, is an obvious reminder of states having individual rights.

Remember Democrats big LIE? "But illegals don't get gov't services". Their anchor babies do and the whole family shares those services as we with a brain know and understand we can't keep paying for that.

Kaelri, you are wrong when you say if you're born here, your'e a citizen. Diplomats with children born in the US are not citizens. There are a few other cases.

You are correct. If they are not under the jurisdiction (allegiance, legality) you have no claim. I would guess that all the anchor babies are not American citizens.

I think you forgot one word in your last paragraph. It's ILLEGAL. I know that's a hard word for you liberals to understand, but that is the English language. It is apparent that you have been influenced by your lack of comprehension of the English language and an education in the public schools.

I'm sure you have missed how many Americans want a similar like the one Arizona has passed. I might guess that you have a family member who is illegal, you make money off of illegals and don't care how many American children are raped and/or murdered or just hate America who has done the most amount of good on this planet compared to any other country ever.

Ron Paul did not make a racist statement. Again, you need to know and comprehend the English language. I recommend an English comprehension course for you. America cannot stand to have any more uneducated people. You are a prime example of why the public education is so fucked up.

I'm not sure if the Supreme court would understand the 14th amendment, four of them did not understand the 2nd amendment.
