Press 1 for a common sense candidate

Republicans Address Hispanic Issues
Six Republican presidential candidates gathered Sunday at the University of Miami for an unusual Spanish-language debate, with immigration high on the agenda and the race in a topsy-turvy state.

...the only candidate who refused to attend was Tom Tancredo...

Kudos to Tancredo for standing on principle. People in this country are sick of pressing 1 for English.

I would also like to note that speaking/understanding English is a requirement for naturalization in this country and if you were born here then by the time you are eighteen you can certainly speak and understand our language. Are these candidates speaking to ineligible voters?

Gee, I wonder how many American citizens are of Hispanic descent. And of those, how many enjoy reading in Spanish, watching Spanish television, and conversing in the Spanish language? Probably quite a lot. As Americans, it is their right to speak any freakin language they desire. It is not their doing that certain agencies make the decision to communicate with them in a language other than English. They didn't DEMAND it and don't REQUIRE it in this day and age of global news and satellite television. I speak Spanish almost every day, read or listen to something in Spanish every day. I find it quite enjoyable conversing in Spanish and discussing the issues of the day. Certainly, these candidates were speaking in English, as I don't know that any of them can speak Spanish. A tidbit: fluent English is NOT required to pass the citizenship test, adequate understanding of the English language is. As an ESL instructor who teaches standing room only classes with waiting lists, I ask you: how long should it take for someone to learn English? Three months? Is that how long it would take you to learn another language? German, Russian, French. In the meantime, what is the harm? No one is forcing these candidates to communicate in Spanish. The are making a choice based on the knowledge that there are many US citizens who watch Spanish television and read Spanish newspapers. NOT because they HAVE to, they enjoy it. Not unlike Asian citizens who speak English just fine, but prefer to watch Asian TV. Again, get a life. All Americans, and those in the process of becoming Americans deserve the God-given freedom of agency to enjoy all the world has to offer us in this digital age: foreign television, internet, global news. You don't have to like it and we don't have to care two figs whether you do or not. Press 1 and get a life.

This week's editorial from the Wilsonville Spokesman:

“Hola! Como esta!”

Those three words are enough to set some people’s nerves on edge, simply because of their perceptions – and in many cases, misperceptions – about immigration, race relations, and the work ethic of the people involved.

Why? Because they’re written in Spanish.

During the past several months, we’ve heard grumbling from more than a few people because lately, some of the messages on local school marquee boards — in Wilsonville, Canby and elsewhere — have been written in both English and Spanish.

This is a logical and reasonable thing to do. While all kids are taught to speak and read English in our schools, not all of their parents can read it.

As mentioned in an article in this newspaper this week about Ornaments to Remember and The Parenting Community, it is vital that all parents be involved in their children’s education. We believe this is true regardless of the parents’ language abilities.

A marquee message in Spanish is, to us, nothing more than an attempt by the schools to reach out to parents who are not native English speakers. If kids learn a little Spanish from it, all the better. It is a good skill to have.

But there are those who infer, from this small concession, that the schools are teaching non-native speakers that it is OK for them not to learn English. They act as if the English language soon will become an endangered species, with those who speak it soon to follow, all because the schools are too “politically correct” to “teach what needs to be taught,” or so goes their argument.

Honestly, we are never sure where to begin with such hogwash.

Fortunately, a survey released last week (as reported in the Oregonian) gives us the data needed to refute it.

The survey, based on the experiences of 14,000 adult Latinos all across the United States of America, found that while only 23 percent of foreign-born Latinos are fluent in English, 88 percent of the second generation are fluent and 94 percent of later generations are fluent. So much for the assertion that no one wants to learn English.

Our schools should strive for 100 percent English fluency among all capable students they teach. We agree that communication is key to community fabric and all neighbors should be able to have a dialogue through our common language.

History shows new Americans always make the effort to learn and assimilate, even today. The real damage to our society comes from hurtful beliefs that are based on questionable logic.

Predictably, there were those who looked past the obvious positive message in the Pew Hispanic Center’s study and focused on the negative. Jim Ludwick, president of Oregonians for Immigration Reform, told the Oregonian, “We’ve entered a culture where being American is not good,” Ludwick said. “One of the ways to undermine this is by taking the values we hold as Americans, like English.”

We hate to inform Mr. Ludwick, but English is not a value. Those who speak it are not automatically good, and those who don’t are not automatically bad. It is the dominant language in our society and the backbone of our economic strength, but it is not a value, per se.

Tolerance is an American value. Hard work is an American value. Liberty, charity, the rule of law, and a willingness to welcome those who are different – those are all American values, too. And none of them are endangered in the least by a bilingual marquee sign at an elementary school.

Again, as I've mentioned on this blog before countries are defined primarily by three things:

Their Borders, their Language, and their Culture. (The only thing Michael Savage says that I whole heartedly agree with)

Take away any one of these three key components, and you will begin to see the slow disintegration of that country.

English is the language of this nation. Not wanting to participate or condone a United States Presidential Election debate in a language other than english should not be considered "Intolerant", but rather, patriotic.

One day, your boss will tell you to either learn to speak Spanish, or you will be replaced by someone who can...but by then it will be to late. The country will have already been lost.

Those of you who say "It's no big deal" or "Get a Life", just don't get it...and you never will. At least not until you're cleaning out your desk and scanning the want ads...or scrambling to learn the language of another country, so that you can keep your job in this one.

I WILL speak Spanish any fucking time I want, it's my right and you can't do a fucking thing about it. There IS NO OFFICIAL LANGUAGE of this country. And even if there was, it is not ILLEGAL to speak another. Do you REALLY think people are going to get ARRESTED or FINED for speaking Spanish? Get real. Just TRY and get in my face about MY constitutional rights. And yes, press 1 and get a life. Whether you like it or not, the free market rules. The free market decides how business is conducted. And if the free market has decided that it wants to communicate with a demographic that pumps mega BILLIONS of dollars into this economy then so be it. What are YOU going to do about it? Do you really think it will matter if YOU decide not to buy a can of DelMonte corn? Did the Bank of America go under because you guys didn't like them doing business with brown people? LOL, hardly.
And don't go calling me pro-illegal immigration, because IM NOT. But I'm not into bashing the Spanish language or brown people as an acceptable method of solving the problem, and you morons are one of the reasons why this shit hasn't been solved by now. You've made this issue so devisive because you've injected race into it from day one, instead of your beloved "rule of law." Instead of keeping the conversation about "the law," you morons have made it about language, children, and cultural differences. From the Pew Hispanic Center website.

Okay, now please note that this piece of data is talking about Hispanic American CITIZENS. The constitution that ONLY YOU LOVE, says that these people have the right to be here, the constitution that ONLY YOU LOVE guarantees these citizens the right to pursue happiness, and the constituion that supposedly ONLY YOU LOVE guarantees their first amendment rights, that includes the right to speak any language they choose. These CITIZENS aren't making any
"demands" on their government or on corporate America to communicate in any other language but English. If our government, thats right "OUR" GOVERNMENT, NOT YOURS, chooses to communicate in various languages to tax paying CITIZENS that is a decision made somewhere down the line by our leaders. If you don't like it, then you'll have to work to change the law (and the constitution). Good luck on that. Ask Canada how it worked for them. Do you really think you're going to stop us from speaking Spanish? Do you really think you're going to stop us from playing Spanish music, celebrating fiestas in our city parks, opening up tiendas in strip malls, do you really think so? People like you won't be happy until even the Hispanic citizens are gone. It's not about "border security" and "economics" for you guys, its about bigoted, ethnocentric rigidness. Too bad. There are 45 million brown people who are here to stay, who are having babies at twice the rate that any other racial sector is. I wonder how many of us there will be in twenty years? I bet that scares the hell out of you, especially the part that is still not sinking into your feeble brains: American citizens of HISPANIC origin. We are here to stay. We love this country, we shed our blood for this country, we work and pay taxes for this country, we celebrate Memorial Day and Veterans Day and the Fourth of July, we fly the American flag, and sometimes we fly the Mexican flag too (because the constitution says we can), and here's the clincher: we couldn't care less how "uncomfortable" you are to have to share "your" country with us, we couldn't care less how pissed off you are that your kids have to sit next to our kids at the school cafeteria, and we couldn't care less if you foam at the mouth and start twitching every time you hear us speaking Spanish. In twenty years, 45 million will be 100 million. It must really suck to be you.

Everybody, run for your lives! They're going to take over the world! Yeah, right. You act like these groups are suddenly mobilizing to take over our government in some kind of sinister coup. Mecha and LaRaza have been around since the the very early 70s, and maybe even late 60s. Their "manifestos" read almost word for word today as they did back then. They're no more going to take over this country than the Aryans. And, like was said in the previous post, when was the last time you picked up the paper and read about LaRaza blowing up a synagogue or shooting a radio talk show host? Get real. Take a valium.

You don't have to speak fluent English to become a naturalized citizen. You only have to have a basic understanding. Which basically means you have to be able to decipher the test in English. Anyone can do that with a few months ESL instructin but still be FAR from fluent. To be truly fluent in English (speaking and writing at an advanced level) takes the average student about 3 to 4 years. Some of the people who post here act like speaking English is some sort of holy sacrament yet it's excrutiatingly obvious from their posts today
(7:42, 9:12, 9:14, 9:18, 9:21,
9:24, 9:51, 9:54, 10:08, and 10:09)

This is MOONDOGGIE, and I suppose your limited reading skills might explain why you completely MISSED my response to your "Chicken Little" drama queen "La Raza is coming, La Raza is coming!" routine. I responded long ago. It's on the previous thread, shortly after you posted your red herring "La Raza" drama.

If La Raza is such an uber-threat, explain to me why there are no reports of unlawful activity, not even a skirmish. No stink bombs even. In nearly 40 years of existance not a single violent or militant uprising that I'm aware of. Are you afraid they're going to T.P. OAF-er headquarters? Wow, I wonder if they'll do as much damage as Aryan Nations.

Like I have said a couple of times, and maybe you're just too stooooopid to read and them comprehend it: La Raza represents mainstream Latinos no more than Aryan Nations represents mainstream Anglos. ROTFLMAO.

Anonymous said...

Moondoggie - I'm afraid you're wasting your breath/time. Surely you're astute enough to detect a certain degree of gun-obsession pervading what passes for blog-posts around here. By way of example: the redneck from a few evenings ago who apparetnly drank enough moonshine to think it was a good idea to post a fabricated story about whipping his gun out on some Hispanic "intruder".

The same element that blasts the left for wanting to "take their guns away" (when proposals for gun control are really focused on keeping guns out of the hands of lunatics who might stroll into a shopping mall and open fire) would love nothing more than to antagonize the (imagined) swarthy hordes of invaders into some sort of violent incident, in which case, the gun-obsessed redneck might realize his wet dream of actually being able to shoot a "wetback" all in the name of self-defense.

You are essentially trying to convice the fringe of one culture that the fringe of another culture doesn't pose a direct threat to his livelihood, when this is precisely the reality he is hell-bent on fashioning for himself.

Anonymous said...

Anon 9:11 --

I agree. After reading the "Japs" post he left on the previous thread there is no longer any question what kind of person he is. For so many OAF-ers, illegal immigration and the solutions that must be found to ethically deal with it, have NOTHING to do with national security or economics or "rule of law." It has to do with this supposed "national identity." That's code for "I want MY America to be 'white'."

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...there are 45 million AMERICAN citizens who are varying shades of brown, varying degrees of "Latino" (many of them are so homogenized that ONLY THEY know of their Latin blood -- and that's okay too). They're having babies at twice the rate of any other racial group in America. Anglos simply aren't having many babies anymore and don't seem inclined to pick up the pace any time soon (could be a well thought out choice but I have my suspicions it might have more to do with plasma TVs, SUVs and other expensive toys). Whatever the reason, Anglos are having fewer and fewer children. In twenty years, these 45million Hispanic citizens will be 100 million. This scares the hell out of people like Mr. Chicken Little.

But for now, 45 million Hispanics -- regardless of how they choose to "live" their lives, what cultural touchpoints they hang on to, how they get their news and in what language they exchange information -- 45 million of them are US CITIZENS! They have jobs, pay taxes, shed their blood for this country, celebrate American holidays and go to church. They take their kids to school and sign them up for Little League. They go camping, fishing, skiing, bowling and shopping. They pump nearly 300 BILLION dollars into the economy and are largely credited with putting a certain person whose name we shall not speak into the White House (so they goofed). They aren't leaving and they aren't going to stop speaking Spanish. And, at the end of the day, even after illegal immigration is finally dealt with, at the end of the day THAT is what people like this guy (the kind of people who still use the term "JAPS") are REALLY pissed off about. Even if he THINKS he can, there's not a damn thing he can do about it. Bienvenidos a los Estados Unidos de América.

Anonymous said...

Moondoggie et. al.

You idiots don't seem to understand....I don't CARE about the hispanic CITIZENS of this country, or how much money they pump into the economy, etc.

My concern lies with the ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. The illegal immigrants are the primary reason why more and more govt. workers in this country are being forced to either learn Spanish, or be re-assigned / removed from employment. How many job announcements (Govt. or otherwise) do you see that have a bi-lingual requirement? You think that you could get a job as a Police Officer in Woodburn without being able to Speak the language of another country? How about a job as a DMV clerk? Social Services Rep? I should not be required by ANYONE to speak a language other than english in order to obtain employment in the United States, an english speaking nation.

My family came to this country legally when I was 6. English is my second language. My father and mother learned a basic knowledge of english before they even moved here, and they taught it to my sister and I before we got here as well. Once here, we spoke english only around the home. I entered school at age 6 with a knowledge of the english language sufficient enough to do well. There were no Italian speaking DMV clerks to help us, no Italian speaking cops, no ESL courses or Italian Only classes, and even if there were my father would have insisted that we speak english.

The ONLY REASON that you would be required to speak Spanish on the job, is to be able to communicate with Illegal Immigrants from Spanish Speaking Nations. BASIC ENGLISH is a requirement for citzenship, so it's not to communicate with those people. The vast majority of LEGAL immigrants, can speak english well enough to where an interpreter is not needed.

Sure, your allowed to speak any language in this country that you please, but making it a requirement only panders to those who have already taken advantage of the US Taxpayers. Enough is enough...I will not pander to a group that has illegally entered the country, used it's taxpayer funded services, and then has the balls to march in the streets demanding that we "legalize" them.

The term "un-grateful" just doesn't seem to be strong enough.

I'd like to actually post on the topic itself, the debate, and not the race-baiting going on here.

I have a big question, and I hope someone can just answer it without calling anyone names.

There are eight candidates in the GOP primary:

Giuliani
Huckabee
Thompson
McCain
Romney
Hunter
Paul
Tancredo

That's eight.

The article says SIX candidates met for the debate. Eight minus six equals two. Therefore, there were TWO candidates who didn't go.

However, the author of this post is saying that "only" Tancredo didn't attend. Clearly, this is an error.

I would like to know who the other candidate not to appear was, and why he didn't attend.

Thank you for returning to rational discussion.

Anthony - What a heart-warming story. Assuming it's true, you and your family stand as a notable exception in the history of Italian immigration to the United States for a number of reasons.

First, unless you are 89 years old or older, your family arrived in the United States after large-scale migration from Italy was halted in 1924 by the National Origins Quota Act which recalibrated the 1921 national origins quoats (the first ever imposed on immigration from Europe) to the ancestry of the 1890 census in order to maintain the "racial" balance in the U.S. as primarily of nortern European and Anglo-Saxon stock. The few Italians who were allowed to come between 1924 and 1965 were largely of exceptionally high-skilled backgrounds, such as foreign-dignitaries, etc.

The average italian immigrant between 1890 and 1924 settled in densely populated urban neighborhoods on the Eastern Seaboard where 90% of their neighbors were also Italian, usually with little education, entirely incapable of speaking English, and whose entire existence in the United States was lived largely within the confines of the Italian ethnic community. Their children exhibited very high dropout rates and Italians were the concern of the nativists of the day who considered them an unassimilable and inferior race of people.

There is a massive body of literature documenting that your experience of rapid acculturation and assimilation is a rare in the modal experience of Italian immigrants in the United States. Considered "wops" and "guineas" all the same things that are said about Mexicans today were voiced about Italians then, and if your parents did arrive during the heyday of Italian immmigration to the U.S. (which I doubt they did, unless, again, you're 87+), I certainly don't blame them for steering clear of the ethnic enclave and assimilating over night in order to spare you and your sister the same sort of hostile reception by the mainstream that others were subjected to. That you come from such exceptional genes, certainly accounts for the brilliance of your posts!

Miglavs doesnt make the distinction between legal and illegal when it comes to the Spanish language. In Miglavia it is assumed that if you speak Spanish you MUST BE illegal. In Miglavia, any language other than English would be outlawed, this would including abolishing satellite television and the internet, because they enable American citizens to communicate in languages other than English, which would be unpatriotic, ne traitorius.

I've enjoyed reading Daniel's Political Musings this month. It's been a rough stretch for the Miglavians: First, there was Anthony DeLucca's "INS/FBI Statistical Report" debacle. Followed by Daniel coming back breathlessly with not-so-incriminating video of hot tamales after an unsuccessful search for "illegal aliens" at a school dinner. Finally, the Anon who fondly recalled the "pure pleasure" of holding a gun to the head of a Latino, which was an interesting thing to say, given that he never specified that the person facing the end of the barrel was, in fact, the "illegal alien" we were clearly supposed to presume he was. I find it refreshing to peek in now and then to see these fools ... well, make fools of themselves. Merry Christmas, Miglavia! Thanks for the laughter and good cheer!

Nice history lesson professor, but I don't get your logic.

Am I supposed to feel somehow ashamed at wanting to curb Illegal Immigration because a bunch of Italians came here illegally in 1890, and since I'm an Italian, I'm supposed to be on the side of the Illegal Immigrant?

Please tell me what the Immigration situation in 1890 has to do with today's un-checked Illegal Immigration? America in 1890, and America in 2007 are vastly different countries. What worked out then, may not be the best solution today.

I don't give a shit about the immigration situation in 1890...I care about today and into the future. So should you.

Dear Mr. DeLucca:

No, you're not supposed to feel ashamed, but if you had any kind of a soul you would at least slack off on the kind of racist and hateful rhetoric you and others like you seem to prefer using when discussing this issue. If you had any sense of good understanding of what your Italian immigrant ancestors went through to be on the recieving end of racism you might try another avenue to solve the illegal immigration problem instead of hateful sneers, bully posturing and threats of violence. Hey, its Christmas, I can make a wish, can't I?

Delucca -

I didn't claim that Italians immigrated here illegally starting in 1890. That is not the case. Until 1921, there were NO QUOTAS on immigration from Europe or any other part of the world except for the Chinese or Japanese (for whom so many on this blog seem to prefer shorthand).

There were two main points in my post.

First, you are a classic example of the old addage that those who ignore history are bound to repeat it. Racist concerns voiced then about the unassimilability of your Italian ancestors are nearly verbatim of those you and others voice about Mexicans and illegal immigrants (who, if given a regular legal status apparently would have no desire to assimilate, in your view).

Second, your story is one I have heard a million times from native-born persons with European ancestors: "My ancestors came legally" (despite the non-existence of immigration quotas, therefore making it nearly impossible to come ILLEGALLY); "They learned English overnight, immediately shed any trace of the old culture, flew the American flag, etc. blah, blah, blah"

This account couldn't be further from the truth of the actual historical experience of non-British European immigrants, who clustered in immigrant enclaves and spoke their native language exclusively, and generally freaked out the native, Anglo-Saxon stock. Only with the second and third generations of these groups did their cultural distinctiveness fade away.

Your story is so exceptional and contrary to the modal immigrant experience that I strongly suspect that you made it up....but, I guess I have to give you the benefit of the doubt.

R Huse said...

Um - Excuse me?

Any idea that non British Europeans hung out, yucked it up and freaked out the locals is a little bit more than offensive.

I would suggest studying up on the experience of Irish immigrants to this country to start.

This is the kind of crap that starts the ludicrous notion that "oh gee, you are only against them because they are brown"

This country, and many others, have a long history of treating second, third and subsequent immigrant waves harshly. That's why all this poppycock by racialists to insist only racists oppose illegal immigration is so inane.

He was mobbed at work the next day after being sworn in as a USA CITIZEN....He got a standing ovation at a lunch we had for him.

YOU NOT ONCE SAID THAT THIS WAY WAS THE BEST WAY TO ASSIMILATE INTO THIS COUNTRY...YOU SHOVED SPANISH DOWN OUR THROATS AS SOME HIGH FLYING DEAL....Fidel is proud of his language...is a total new proud AMERICAN...DOESN'T FLY TWO FLAGS...LOVES ALL AMERICAN SPORTS....AND THINKS PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO JUST TALK THE TALK ON THE IMMIGRATION ISSUE NEED YOUR ASS KICKED.

We are not going to allow this invasion too much longer...politically, or by force at the border..it's gonna come to a screaming halt.

I have so much respect for my friend...his kids, all speak ENGLISH!

His daughter is so far in school(a near genius) she may enter Portland State as a freshman her senior year in high school cause she nabbed all her credits in her 3rd year of high school.

Gee, I wonder how many American citizens are of Hispanic descent. And of those, how many enjoy reading in Spanish, watching Spanish television, and conversing in the Spanish language? Probably quite a lot. As Americans, it is their right to speak any freakin language they desire. A MOONEY POST

Your so hung up on yourself and the "BIG DEAL" YOU SPEAK SPANISH!

I respect education in any form, but this is still AMERICA, and the frigging language is still ENGLISH...GET IT!

Laws other than quotas. Read what the founding fathers had to say about immigration. (from Nova Scotia of all places).

And finally, you can make the insinuation all day and night that I'm a racist, and it doesn't phase me one bit. I'm almost tempted to believe that the only reason you say that is because I'm "white". In which case, you're the racist.

Now, for the language bullshit. Let's begin at the beginning: Daniels own personal, incessant obsession with the Spanish language and "Press 1 for English" whinefest. Yes, language is one big "so what." The ISSUE IS:

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.

If you don't want to discuss language then tell Daniel to quit bringing it up.

We've been down this road before. Immigrants around the turn of the last century were much more assertive than immigrants from Mexico have been. I've yet to meet an American of Mexican descent, nor a Mexican immigrant, who thought they should found their own separate schools with instruction restricted to Spanish and a Catholic curriculum. Outside of the Chicano movement in LA and the Farmworkers union, Mexican immigrants have been awfully compliant.

But in 19th century Wisconsin, Germans founded their own schools, with instruction in German and Lutheran theology as the basis of the curriculum. Across the US immigrants from Europe formed cultural societies and clubs, separate parochial schools, new churches, published their own newspapers and books in their native languages etc. I guess now we have Spanish language cable TV and radio.

All of this caused quite a stir among the Yankees and this led to a whole series of Americanization laws, mandating English-only instruction, the consolidation of parochial schools into public districts, etc. Ultimately, it led to strict limits on immigration, particularly from southern and eastern Europe. The panic in large part was because so many European immigrants pushed so vigorously for political power and economic position, through engaging in municipal politics and particularly through the labor movement. By the time of the red-scare of 1918 communism was viewed as an immigrant threat. Hysteria was in the air. All non-Yankees were suspect. And hated. And stereotyped as lazy criminals.

If your grandparents came to the USA during this period (1870-1920), as mine did, rest assured they did not blend in easily, did not Americanize quickly, and did not bow humbly to the demands of their Yankee employers. They fought like hell, and in doing so they changed America for the better. Through organizing and activism they brought you the now defunct blue collar middle class, won WWII, and created an America that peaked in economic equality in 1971.

The Yankees never got over it. And since the Reagan revolution their cultural heirs have made the US more unequal than it has ever been, shipped our industries overseas, created a nation of debtors, and turned patriotism into a bullying posture (just what it was around the time of the Spanish American war). Put otherwise, in the end, their grandchildren and great grandchildren grew up to be immigrant hating monolingual cowards unleashing the same kind of hate against Mexicans that Yankees turned loose on them, and blaming immigrants for all their woes.

Mexican immigrants didn't force Americans to embrace a negative savings rate. They didn't send our jobs to China. They didn't decide that bin Laden and his few hundred followers, who spent perhaps $500,000 to carry out 9-11, armed with boxcutters, required an endless trillion dollar war to suppress. They didn't invent the financial instruments that led to the subprime mortgage crisis. They aren't making a billion dollars a day selling you gasoline for inefficient machines your sensible grandparents would have smirked at ....

What we really need in this country is for Mexican Americans - who are the single largest subnationality in the western United States - to quit taking crap off Anglos and assert themselves. We may have to wait until the 45 million LEGAL Mexican-American CITIZENS grows to 100 million LEGAL AMERICAN CITIZENS, then by sheer force of numbers, they will assert themselves, just as the Baby Boomers have.

"Um - Excuse me?

Any idea that non British Europeans hung out, yucked it up and freaked out the locals is a little bit more than offensive."

Um...so sorry to offend you but that's pretty much historical fact.

"I would suggest studying up on the experience of Irish immigrants to this country to start."

I'm not sure what your point is with this sentence, but maybe YOU should do some reading because your understanding of America's immigration seems pretty woeful.

Some recommendations for you:

"From Ellis Island to JFK: New York's Two Great Waves of Immigration" by Nancy Foner.

"Whiteness of a Different Color: European Immigrants and the Alchemy of Race" by Matthew Jacobson

"Strangers in the Land" by John Higham

"The Uprooted" by Oscar Handlin

"Beyond the Melting Pot" by Nathan Glazer and Daniel Moynihan

The extent to which people question certain historical and factual assertions on this blog without any evidence to the contrary is astounding.

Anonymous said...

Delucca - you're what i like to refer to as an UNeducated idiot.

Let me summarize my post:

It is common for Americans of European descent to wax nostalgic about their ancestors' immigration experience, and such stories tend to downplay or ignore altogether the extent to which these immigrants lived a life wholly consumed within the ethnic culture. Your story - which I suspect is not true, but again, I have no choice but to give you the benefit of the doubt - fits the nostalgic mode of which I speak. No, I never said that you said you learned English over night, but does this really matter to my larger point?

And, why don't YOU enlighten me about what the founding fathers had to say about immigration. I know citizenship was a big deal then, but as for immigration, aside from the obvious wishes against the immigration of foreign-troops, and later, slave-ships, I'm not aware of one immigration law being put on the books until the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1889 or so. But again, I haven't done much reading on the topic, so why don't you be so kind with your store of knowledge. And, by the way, quotas are installed through legislation, which is signed into LAW.

Mexican immigrants didn't force Americans to embrace a negative savings rate.

>True, our tax laws do. We tax savings at a higher rate than most industrialized nations. Nothing penalizes savings quite like the US tax code, thus you have less of it. Thank you death tax, thank you capitol gains tax. On the bright side though, since capitol gains have been lowered in the past 30 years, the percentage of Americans who are invested in the stock market has exploded. You would think that those who can conceive of a correlation between CO2 causing a 0.7 degree temperature rise, causing ice to melt, causing sea levels to flood causing massive death could see a link between taxes and savings habits. Oddly, this seems quite elusive to them.

They didn't send our jobs to China.

> No, they definitely dd not. Zoning, Over the top environmental regulation, Unemployed lawyers, Absurd labor regulation and union rules did.

They didn't decide that bin Laden and his few hundred followers, who spent perhaps $500,000 to carry out 9-11, armed with boxcutters, required an endless trillion dollar war to suppress.

>Very true. Maybe if this issue had been addressed sooner, rather than later, say when the USS Cole was bombed, or the Kenya and Nairobi embassies attacked, it would have nipped it in the bud. Sure worked with Libya, they were the toast of the town in the terrorist world. Regan sent the bombers over Quaddaffis camp, and that sure shut him up.

They didn't invent the financial instruments that led to the subprime mortgage crisis.

>Ahhh, the adjustable rate mortgage, true, its application in these times is ridiculous. It was really meant for the Carter years when that was the only way anyone could buy a house. Thus its inception as a mainstay at that point, thank you Jimmy.

They aren't making a billion dollars a day selling you gasoline for inefficient machines your sensible grandparents would have smirked at ....

I think my grandma's car got worse mileage than cars of today. I could be wrong on that but I think mileage has been going up not down. Hmm, lets see, a Billion dollars a day for people to sink a pipes miles underground in some of the most inhospitable places on earth, extract a product that enables me to get to where I want to go quickly and efficiently versus over a billion dollars a day for HHS, which breeds welfare people to kill me and takes money from those that earned it to give it to others who they think are more entitled to it. Hmm, I wonder......... which is a better deal for me?

Anonymous said...

Who cares who is to blame for the examples I cited? That wasn't the point. The point is, it wasn't the illegal Mexican immigrant. Perspective and humanity are the missing ingredients to solving this issue in a meaningful and lasting way.

Yes, the illegal alien issue must be solved. But, ugly and merciless bashing of language, a culture, and a people is NOT the way to do it. In fact, the kind of racist rhetoric and bigoted bullying is likely a significant factor at play in the fact that little has been achieved to date. Words matter. Words set the tone. Politicians (who, like it or not, are mostly worried about re-election) have danced around this issue and hemmed and hawed because they don't want to be associated with the kind of bully rhetoric and mean-spiritedness that has been attached to this issue by groups like "OAF-er" (which is ashame, because OAF'er's numbers would swell, if they would ban this kind of behaviour) and bloggers like Daniel (although he is improving slightly).

The issue is ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, not Mexican music, school meetings for Hispanic parents, or Spanish television.

You,CAN READ?
The myth of Aztlan can best be explained by California's Santa Barbara School District's Chicano Studies textbook, "The Mexican American Heritage" by East Los Angeles high school teacher Carlos Jimenez. On page 84 there is a redrawn map of Mexico and the United States, showing Mexico with a full one-third more territory, all of it taken back from the United States. On page 107, it says "Latinos are now realizing that the power to control Aztlan may once again be in their hands."

WHAT WAS THE GUY???? A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER!!

You ok with a teacher going on with that lesson plan?

A local high school has a Mencha chapter. GEE, I wonder where that started?

The University of Oregon Chapter of MEChA hints at its communist sentiments by posting a picture of Cuba's communist dictator Fidel Castro. On its web site, "La Voz de Aztlan" has an excerpt from a speech of February 7, 1997, by Fidel Castro who said "the United States should return to Mexico huge chunks of that country's territories it acquired more than a century ago" La Voz de Aztlan, whom Antonio Villaraigosa refuses to repudiate, also disseminates antisemitic propaganda,

Apparently, these "Raza" cults are composed of people who unabashedly hate the United States and often support other groups and leaders who also hate America. Raza's hatred of America is so intense, that most make bedfellows to anyone else who also hates America, like dictator Fidel Castro; murderer of his own people Sadam Hussain; and the women hating Taliban -- and of course they sympathize with all Islamic Terrorists over the Israel/Palestine issue. Raza cults are the loudest and most insistent element of the immigration lobby in California. Inebriated with a sense of righteous victimhood, and entranced by myths of a heroic racial past, devotees of the Aztlan cults are rapidly extending their influence within California's Hispanic population, particularly among students in the university system.

NOOOO, THIS AIN'T THE KKK.

"The only reason those guys don't like illegals is because they are brown, the only people against illegals are racists". So comments on this blog are a big enough deal to label everyone who takes its position as racist.

On the other hand, UO and some high schools have chapters of an overtly racist group - La MEChA - and that's not a big deal?

Come on, your kidding me?

Comments on a blog are enough to label an entire group, but a school having official chapters of a racist hate group is not a big deal? So I guess if the Aryan Nations had a chapter at the UO you guys would be perfectly fine with that?

WOW, what a day. Today, I spent a few hours getting caught up with Mecha. I read their manifesto several times, had a phone interview with a top tier Mecha leader, read an interview with the author of Mecha's manifesto, and then went back to the national website to check it out even further. First and foremost: Mecha is a student advocacy organization and it always has been. What makes them a racist organization if OAF-er isn't? They're both organizations working towards political and social change. They both rant incessantly about the "protection of culture," and both have a tendency towards dramatic overstatement. Hmmmmm, the similarities are interesting, to say the least. You guys should get together for a potluck or something.

Their manifesto is a rhetorical, romantical, over-the-top chunk of tripe. However, it is hardly a call for Hispanic college students to attempt a bloody and violent racial Armageddon in the streets of America.

I would discuss Mecha's 40 year old, frightening, alarming, epic, treacherous, world-changing, and apocalyptic manifesto with you Anon (you know who you are), but first you would have to display a working knowledge of rhetorical terms used to analyze literature. If you can tell me what the following terms mean: hyperbole, metaphor, soliloquy, allegory, and figurative language, I will be glad to discuss their manifesto with you. You'll need to know these terms in order to understand what the authors are communicating to Mecha members. It also helps to have a little knowledge and understanding about classic Hispanic literature and lore, some of the Mecha stuff just doesn't translate well without it. But we can try.

Sorry Anon, I know you've got a Cialis-fueled hard-on to "take it to the streets" with your 'Nam friends, but let's look at something that really just sums it all up, okay? Go to the official Mecha website. Their on-line forum is amazing. A clearinghouse for radical militancy. A hotbed of passionate calls to action. I mean, these guys are at an all-time boiling point. It's volcanic almost. I fear things may just blow at any moment - we're talking hot, molten Latino lava. Yeah.... if that's what you call two hits since November. ROTFLMAO.

This is an interesting topic. My two cents:

I am NOT a supporter of ANY form of so-called "identity-politics," whether it's race-based, gender-based, or sexual-orientation-based. Period. I think they're a political dead-end for all those who are drawn to such movements. They may make for feel-good solidarity and pave the way for some limited advancements and reforms, but they are, in the end, disorienting, distracting and misguided.

Having said THAT, it also needs to be said that there is a fundamental difference, I think between race-based politics and racist politics. It's simplifying things a lot, but there's a HUGE difference between playing political and social catch-up (NAACP) and maintaining that you're the king of the hill (any white supremacist organization, for example) and that anyone different from you is inferior.

I really have no idea what La MEChA is about. Maybe they're racist. Maybe not. I don't know. It does seem, though, that the Miglavians take great delight in bending over backwards to empower them with credibility that they probably don't have or deserve, but that doesn't change the fact that, his protestations to the contrary, Daniel Miglavs IS a bigot. Maybe not a white supremacist, but there are degrees of bigotry, as there are with most things. And if Daniel Miglavs is not a bigot, then the word "bigot" really doesn't mean anything and ought to be sticken from the dictionary. I wonder why RHuse, who seems to be a pretty intelligent, well-informed and thoughtful person, doesn't see that.

EL PLAN DE AZTLÁN
El Plan Espiritual de Aztlán
In the spirit of a new people that is conscious not only of its proud historical heritage but also of the brutal "gringo" invasion of our territories, we, the Chicano inhabitants and civilizers of the northern land of Aztlán from whence came our forefathers, reclaiming the land of their birth and consecrating the determination of our people of the sun, declare that the call of our blood is our power, our responsibility, and our inevitable destiny.

We are free and sovereign to determine those tasks which are justly called for by our house, our land, the sweat of our brows, and by our hearts. Aztlán belongs to those who plant the seeds, water the fields, and gather the crops and not to the foreign Europeans. We do not recognize capricious frontiers on the bronze continent

Brotherhood unites us, and love for our brothers makes us a people whose time has come and who struggles against the foreigner "gabacho" who exploits our riches and destroys our culture. With our heart in our hands and our hands in the soil, we declare the independence of our mestizo nation. We are a bronze people with a bronze culture. Before the world, before all of North America, before all our brothers in the bronze continent, we are a nation, we are a union of free pueblos, we are Aztlán.

For La Raza to do. Fuera de La Raza nada.

Program
El Plan Espiritual de Aztlán sets the theme that the Chicanos (La Raza de Bronze) must use their nationalism as the key or common denominator for mass mobilization and organization. Once we are committed to the idea and philosophy of El Plan de Aztlán, we can only conclude that social, economic, cultural, and political independence is the only road to total liberation from oppression, exploitation, and racism. Our struggle then must be for the control of our barrios, campos, pueblos, lands, our economy, our culture, and our political life. El Plan commits all levels of Chicano society - the barrio, the campo, the ranchero, the writer, the teacher, the worker, the professional - to La Causa.

Nationalism
Nationalism as the key to organization transcends all religious, political, class, and economic factions or boundaries. Nationalism is the common denominator that all members of La Raza can agree upon.

Organizational Goals
1. UNITY in the thinking of our people concerning the barrios, the pueblo, the campo, the land, the poor, the middle class, the professional-all committed to the liberation of La Raza.

2. ECONOMY: economic control of our lives and our communities can only come about by driving the exploiter out of our communities, our pueblos, and our lands and by controlling and developing our own talents, sweat, and resources. Cultural background and values which ignore materialism and embrace humanism will contribute to the act of cooperative buying and the distribution of resources and production to sustain an economic base for healthy growth and development Lands rightfully ours will be fought for and defended. Land and realty ownership will be acquired by the community for the people's welfare. Economic ties of responsibility must be secured by nationalism and the Chicano defense units.

3. EDUCATION must be relative to our people, i.e., history, culture, bilingual education, contributions, etc. Community control of our schools, our teachers, our administrators, our counselors, and our programs.

4. INSTITUTIONS shall serve our people by providing the service necessary for a full life and their welfare on the basis of restitution, not handouts or beggar's crumbs. Restitution for past economic slavery, political exploitation, ethnic and cultural psychological destruction and denial of civil and human rights. Institutions in our community which do not serve the people have no place in the community. The institutions belong to the people.

5. SELF-DEFENSE of the community must rely on the combined strength of the people. The front line defense will come from the barrios, the campos, the pueblos, and the ranchitos. Their involvement as protectors of their people will be given respect and dignity. They in turn offer their responsibility and their lives for their people. Those who place themselves in the front ranks for their people do so out of love and carnalismo. Those institutions which are fattened by our brothers to provide employment and political pork barrels for the gringo will do so only as acts of liberation and for La Causa. For the very young there will no longer be acts of juvenile delinquency, but revolutionary acts.

6. CULTURAL values of our people strengthen our identity and the moral backbone of the movement. Our culture unites and educates the family of La Raza towards liberation with one heart and one mind. We must insure that our writers, poets, musicians, and artists produce literature and art that is appealing to our people and relates to our revolutionary culture. Our cultural values of life, family, and home will serve as a powerful weapon to defeat the gringo dollar value system and encourage the process of love and brotherhood.

7. POLITICAL LIBERATION can only come through indepen-dent action on our part, since the two-party system is the same animal with two heads that feed from the same trough. Where we are a majority, we will control; where we are a minority, we will represent a pressure group; nationally, we will represent one party: La Familia de La Raza!

Action

1. Awareness and distribution of El Plan Espiritual de Aztlán. Presented at every meeting, demonstration, confrontation, courthouse, institution, administration, church, school, tree, building, car, and every place of human existence.

2. September 16, on the birthdate of Mexican Independence, a national walk-out by all Chicanos of all colleges and schools to be sustained until the complete revision of the educational system: its policy makers, administration, its curriculum, and its personnel to meet the needs of our community.

3. Self-Defense against the occupying forces of the oppressors at every school, every available man, woman, and child.

4. Community nationalization and organization of all Chicanos: El Plan Espiritual de Aztlán.

5. Economic program to drive the exploiter out of our community and a welding together of our people's combined resources to control their own production through cooperative effort.

6. Creation of an independent local, regional, and national political party.

A nation autonomous and free - culturally, socially, economically, and politically- will make its own decisions on the usage of our lands, the taxation of our goods, the utilization of our bodies for war, the determination of justice (reward and punishment), and the profit of our sweat.

El Plan de Aztlán is the plan of liberation!

Ok - This was the first cut and paste job that actually added something. Its really amazing, You gotta wonder who it is that could read through this and still have issues with applying the term "racist organization" to MEChA.

The fact of the matter is, MEChA's slogan is pure racism and clearly intended as such. El Plan is clearly racist, and the MEChA manifesto is littered in racist overtones that are impossible to miss. To continue to make excuses for the organization because they are not involved in active overthrow of the government, are perhaps not well known and do not seem to be initiating physical violence against individuals is a little silly.

Many Views on Immigration

It's been a while, but you probably remember the big TV ad campaign for a popular men's "skin bracer," in which a pretty young thing responds to some hopeful guy's overture by smacking him right across the chops: "Smack!"

And his happy, cheery rejoinder was always, "Thanks! I needed that!"

Well, I'm that guy now. And like him, I'll cheerfully acknowledge it. In my last two offerings in this space, I presumed to diagnose the illegal immigration dilemma, and then to offer a reasoned, detailed solution.

Who am I to do that? Hey, I'm just another concerned citizen, but I've been given the opportunity to wrestle this beast here, and so I have. And most of the reader responses have been appreciative and encouraging. But not all. And I'm realizing that's the beauty of the pundit pages here at NewsMax. Readers can respond . . . and they do!

In this instance, I really feel some of the responses deserve the same opportunity I've been given. Some of them follow below, right after I state that nothing I wrote should have been construed as approving any kind of "amnesty."

In fact, a review will show that I emphatically stated that amnesty shouldn't be considered in any form . . . or called by any other name.

Just for an example, this is the kind of response I've been getting previously: "Dear Pat Boone, I don't always agree with your opinions, but I thought this was a well written article, logical and fair for all concerned."

Jim A., Orem, Utah"

So I was somewhat taken aback by this one, from a veteran who certainly deserves to address the issue:

Dear Pat Boone, I have followed your editorials . . . but this time we are not on the same wavelength. Citizenship should not be granted to the illegals in this country any other way than from their country of origin. It is amazing to me how many people say that the only reason that we must allow the illegals to stay is because it is too hard. Hundreds of thousands of American died in WWII alone, and I don't think you ever heard the excuse that "it was too hard" to sweat, sacrifice, and die to preserve our country. Personally I think that what Bush, Kennedy, McCain, and others are proposing is more insidious and more disastrous than even WWII . . . Sorry, but what you propose is the end of America! — James S. (S-E Asian veteran A6 pilot), Maryland

That really gave me pause, but while I was digesting it, I read the following:

Dear Pat Boone, Your plan to "make them citizens" is not a good plan. I interact with illegals, every day. The Houston area is flooded with them, since it is a sanctuary city. Most don't care to be citizens, learn English, learn laws, learn our cultures, and especially renounce Mexico for America. There are many who talk about the Aztlan Movement, to take back the southern part of the county, which is taught in Mexican schools and pushed by groups like La Raza ("The Race"), MENCHA, and LULAC . . . You don't know how many murders are going on around the Laredo, Texas, area, because the MSM will not report them. A Mex-American, who works for my father, says people are dying almost daily. Did you know that more people have been murdered in the U.S., by illegal aliens in the last five years, than our fallen soldiers in Iraq? . . . The Mexican GDP rank is ninth in the world, so why are we trying to change governments in the Middle East, when we need to change the extremely corrupt government of our neighbor, to create fair paying jobs, and infrastructure for their people? — Craig P.,

If you nativists ever ventured beyond your own white picket fenced front yards, you would know that it is quite common in much of the world for there to be multiple languages that are used in any given society. But even so, English is in no way threatened by any other language. It is the dominant language in international commerce and its influence and use will continue to spread, not diminish. I'm surprised you don't object to new words being added to the language. Try picking up a dictionary from 1950 and one printed today. You will find a lot of new words. Why don't you object to that, since you are obviously so petrified of change? I can't even believe what I'm seeing ... you're pissed because some businesses and government offices have the "Press 1 for English" option? That's enough for you to grab the pitchforks? Did someone sprain a muscle in your finger reaching for the "1" key? Did losing that valuable half-second throw the rest of your day off? Anchor Baby Power
La Voz de Aztlan has produced a video in honor of the millions of babies that have been born as US citizens to Mexican undocumented parents. These babies are destined to transform America. The nativist CNN reporter Lou Dobbs estimates that there are over 200,000 "Anchor Babies" born every year whereas George Putnam, a radio reporter, says the figure is closer to 300,000. La Voz de Aztlan believes that the number is approximately 500,000 "Anchor Babies" born every year.

The video below depicts the many faces of the "Anchor Baby Generation". The video includes a fascinating segment showing a group of elementary school children in Santa Ana, California confronting the Minutemen vigilantes. The video ends with a now famous statement by Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez of the University of Texas at Austin.
