News flash: Amazon already did this

Report: Multnomah County should privatize library system
A report, “Checking Out the Options,” by Cascade research associate Christopher Robinson, comes as county commissioners are contemplating placement of a library district authorization measure on the May 2012 primary ballot. If approved, the district would provide permanent tax-raising authority for the library system in place of a series of temporary five-year tax levies and support from the county general fund.

County property taxes would rise as a result of the measure, which also would free some funds for the county to spend elsewhere.

Cascade, a pro-corporate, libertarian research and advocacy group in Portland, argues in the report that Multnomah County library operations are more expensive than those in Seattle and Denver. It pins the blame largely on high pension and health insurance benefits for county employees.

If you aren't reading this because you are currently downloading $1 books on your kindle I will understand. As I've stated many times here in the past I am in favor of closing down the taxpayer funded DVD rental stores. And unless you are really into looking at porn on public computers you should agree with me.

And for those of you who don't agree with me just know that my current plan is to become head of my local library and stock the shelves with nothing but Ann Coulter books. It's not like I need to respond to market demands or anything, you pay for the books whether you want them or not.

Our libraries became PC about 25 years ago and we decided a librarian needed to be paid as much as a scientist. When I was a kid high school girls worked at the library for minimum wage but today all the librarians are paid about $100k a year to check out books and put them in the rack. The problem is that today the libraries spend far less on books then they do on labor. What is the purpose of a library if not to provide books??? The state believe the purpose it to provide high paying jobs.

Just like the always Billions in debt 6 days a week (would you really miss getting that bill or junk mail on a saturday?) US Postal service and the always Billions in debt US Choo Choo trains - Amtrac, the Library is so 19th century and needs to head in the direction of the 8 track music tapes .

Of course YOUR Tax dollars keep them going so your Government will keep them going no matter what.

Remember Gov't knows better than YOU on how to spend your money, i.e. decades old failed ESL programs, prevalent "Bilingual" Headstart, "immigrant" worker housing, Millions to Mexicans, not Americans, to work in the forests, Bi-"Cultural" & bi-lingual social service "specialists", "help" with mortgages and college, cash for clunkers, $7,500 in tax credits for buying a Hybrid/Electric car and hundreds of million$ more to set up public charging stations, 1/2 Billion $ to Fisker, 1/2 Billion $ to Solyndra, Billion$ to GM & Dodge, etc. etc.

Next thing you know, to help the "enviroment", Pres. Hussein Obama will propose "subsidies/stimulus money" for new Horse and buggie factories, to be built in Mexico. Yes also a new "Guest Worker" program to shovel up the horse shit as well.

How much more proof do you people need that Socialism never has and never will solve anything.

"The problem with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other peoples money, even China's."

And after Miglavs successfully shuts down the libraries, he proposes a mass book burning as a kick-off event for his next campaign: Privatizing water and air. Bring your swastikas!

Anonymous said...

A book burning would be a cheap way to heat our homes with "renewable" resources, hmmm.

Practical as well dummy, as your implication of Daniel approving of censorship (written to a blogger enjoying our 1st Amnend. rights), illustrates your ignorance as all books are available electronically now.

Do your knuckles bleed much from dragging on the ground idiot Liberal Democrat?

Anonymous said...

Now the dirty filthy teabagging racists and bigots want to close down the libraries.

Anonymous said...

If you truly believe that "all" books are available electronically, then you're the one who is ignorant. In any case, it's an irrelevant argument. Libraries are not simply buildings containing bookshelves; they are public cultural spaces for the entire community, long regarded by the vast majority of sensible Republicans and Democrats as vital to a healthy democracy. When it comes to his views on libraries, Miglavs isn't the 99 percent. He's a tiny, tiny minority within the remaining 1 percent, those who constitute the nation's truly hard-core fascist idiots.

FP said...

What? The dirty, filthy, homosexual racists and bigots want to close down the libraries?

Anon 12:19, are you anti-gay?

Anonymous said...

Um, FP? Pssst ... come over here for a second.

First off, I believe what the Anon means by "tea-bagging" is participating in Tea PARTY activities.

But since you clearly are interested in the sexual meaning of the phrase, you might keep in mind: Tea-bagging ain't a gay thing. Heterosexuals do it too. You only need one bag. ;-)

But thanks for a fantastic laugh!

Anonymous said...

No one is suggesting that we shut down the library. What we are suggesting is that we run it as though the intent was to provide books for citizens and NOT to provide big paychecks for over rated librarians. Lets try something simple like mandating that 90% of the library budget is spent on buying books and other media and 10% on wages and facilities.

Anonymous said...

Actually, someone is suggesting closing down libraries: Read his own words:

As I've stated many times here in the past I am in favor of closing down the taxpayer funded DVD rental stores.

"DVD rental stores" is Miglavs' way of saying "libraries," in case you didn't know.

Fortunately, Miglavs is about the ONLY person suggesting this. But if we want to see how much traction the idea has, how about this: Miglavs, run for office, and make that your primary cause. Let's see how many votes you get.

FP said...

Um, anon? Pssst ... come over here for a second.

If, as you say, the other anon was referring to Tea PARTY activites, then why use a vulgar sexual term to refer to something that isn't sexual in nature?

Tea-bagging ain't a gay thing.

Apparently they didn't get the memo.

Anonymous said...

So since gay people do it and use the phrase, it's a gay thing? Gay people also use the word "f---g," FP. They also use the slang word "blowjob." Is this sinking in yet? Has the light bulb come on?

Do you spend a lot of time with the Gay Slang Dictionary, FP? I'd never seen it before.

FP said...

The fact is, up until Anderson Cooper (a self-declared homosexual) started denigrating the Tea Party like a puerile seventh-grader, the term teabagger was limited to the obscurity of the homosexual "community". Gee, imagine that: homosexual slang being dragged into the mainstream by... a homosexual.

Hey anon, is this sinking in yet? Has the light bulb come on?

Anonymous said...

On the one hand, I agree with you on Cooper's tasteless remark; on the other, it's difficult for me to really get worked about an isolated remark about the Tea Party when Roger Ailes runs a 24/7 network whose exclusive function, by design, is to a) denigrate and marginalize anyone to the left of Ghengis Kahn, and b) Champion the Tea Party and Republicans everywhere.

However: What's really sinking in is that you a) Have had a pretty bland sex life, and b) are not so in command of the English language as you'd like to think.

I doubt ... oh, never mind.

Whoops, my mistake. "Occassionally" swimming against the tide. ;-)

Yup... Fox News, exalting nation and often race above the individual. We all know that Fox News stands for a centralized, autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.

A news network. ONE news network out of many. A non-government owned entity.

Only in anonymousland.

Anonymous said...

...exalting nation

Totally. The only way they possibly squeeze any more red white and blue into the screen is if they face-painted the anchors like fans at the Super Bowl.

...and often race above the individual.

I suspect that academic studies have revealed streaks of racism in FOX coverage, but since I can't point to any, I'll pass on this one. Hell, I'll even give it to you: I'm sure FOX anchors aren't racist any more than Daniel Miglavs is ... and everybody knows that Daniel isn't racist. :-)

We all know that Fox News stands for a centralized, autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader,

As long as it's a white Republican "Christian" who professes to be fighting a war on terror. Now, if you're black and a Democrat, watch your ass!

.. severe economic and social regimentation ...

So long as its accomplished in the name of "free markets" and red white and blue capitalism.

and forcible suppression of opposition.

Hell, why not?. Unless, of course, you're with the Tea Party.

FP said...

Totally. The only way they possibly squeeze any more red white and blue into the screen is if they face-painted the anchors like fans at the Super Bowl.

Knowledge no doubt gleaned from your near-religious devotion to monitoring Fox news. What other way would you know about an American company having the gall to show American colors to an American audience? The nerve of them!

I suspect that academic studies have revealed streaks of racism in FOX coverage, but since I can't point to any, I'll pass on this one. Hell, I'll even give it to you: I'm sure FOX anchors aren't racist any more than Daniel Miglavs is...

And now, a quote from you from the previous thread:

You got nothing, buddy. Nothing.

Oops!

As long as it's a white Republican "Christian" who professes to be fighting a war on terror. Now, if you're black and a Democrat, watch your ass!

Love the scare quotes. But what if it's a Democrat "Christian" (or is that "Muslim"?) who is continuing the previous administration's policies regarding the war on terror, with a couple extra wars tossed in for good measure? Oh, silly me; I forgot: All’s fair in love and war. You love wars conducted by Democrats. "Christian" or not.

So long as its accomplished in the name of "free markets" and red white and blue capitalism.

Again, love the scare quotes. Free markets are so scary. And of course, capitalism of the red, white, & blue variety is so passé. Crony capitalism is what's chic in Washington right now.

Hell, why not?. Unless, of course, you're with the Tea Party.

Good for you, getting your news from real journalists like Jon Stewart, instead of comedic hacks like Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien.

You make me proud.

Blather about "scare quotes" from an idiot who gets his "news" from a station that has as its mission scaring the living daylights out of people. There's a reason that FOX "News" viewers are vastly less informed than those who don't. 'Nuff said.

Anonymous said...

Fairly lengthy post, FP. A lot of words. Specifically, a lot of words hanging on the premise that "FOX" is a legitimate news gathering organization.

You don't see the problem there, do you?

Anonymous said...

I looked up "haughty" in the dictionary, and it says, "See FP's comments at Daniel's Political Musings."

DAVE01 said...

Which news organization do you call "legitimate" if FOX is not? If you are talking about channels like CNN, I don't think you know what a news show is.

I saw on CNN the other day about the gun running to mexican drug gangs that obama did. I think it was Anderson Cooper, he just about said it was all Bush's fault. For anyone who has followed the massive crimes committed and the deaths caused by obama, holder, napalotino and clinton I laughed at his bullshit. For the uneducated who only watch CNN, they would think it was all Bush's fault. Of course cooper can't help but be a liar and mouthpiece for the destroyer in the white hut. Cooper had some idiot on the show who was clearly biased against republicans and bush. He didnt' mention that Bush's administration stopped or called the mexicans after guns accidentally went over the border and the mexicans didn't show up to grab them, the program was immediately stopped. Under obama, they wanted the guns to go south so they would show up at murder scenes.

Hundreds and maybe thousands of dead people with many more to come. They are willing to sacrifice your family member to get their anti second amendment agenda passed to violate American civil rights. I'm glad you voted for the criminal and murderer in chief. May your family and friends experience what Terry, Jaime and over two hundred mexicans experienced because of obama from the american paid for and american supplied guns to mexican terrorists. Obama and company are directly supplying mexicans terrorists with military grade weapons and explosives. One additional bonus in obama's plan is to destabilize the mexican government. I don't think most countries would want to be a friend of obama's. He will kill you and your people to get his agenda.

Obama and company, such wonderful folks.

LOL, a 'legit' news organization. You are such a fool. Don't forget rachel maddow, she's an idiot too. Why do the liberals have such idiots and liars as their 'legit' news source.

Anonymous said...

I looked up idiot and it said ANON 7:46 AM.

Anonymous said...

I looked up "unoriginal" and it said ANON 8:57 AM.

Anonymous said...

Dave, I've never seen/heard Rachel Maddow and, in fact, could not even tell you which network she's on, or for that matter, if she's radio or TV. I have literally never heard her, anywhere. If she were part of a police lineup, I would not be able to identify her, unless I had a lucky guess.

As for CNN, I haven't watched it with any regularity since Bernard Shaw was the anchor, and the last time I even saw it was at a relative's house when they had it tuned to CNN when those Chilean miners were trapped underground. I will confess to possibly having glimpsed it in the last few years while walking through airports.

Is there anything else you'd like to assume about me that isn't true? Like what I have for breakfast? My favorite color? Who I voted for? (It wasn't Obama) Go for it. Knock yourself out. Right now, you're batting .000, so you can only go up.

FP said...

Yes! More bromides, name-calling, and presumptuousness from the foremost authority on blather, Anonymous! For in one statement he/she/it says:

...an idiot who gets his "news" from a station that has as its mission scaring the living daylights out of people. There's a reason that FOX "News" viewers are vastly less informed than those who don't.

Then this:

Is there anything else you'd like to assume about me that isn't true? Like what I have for breakfast? My favorite color? Who I voted for? (It wasn't Obama) Go for it. Knock yourself out. Right now, you're batting .000, so you can only go up.

Verdict?

'Nuff said.

DAVE01 said...

I'm simply asking what you think is a 'legit' news show? I mostly watch fox and cnn in the mornings for a few minutes and most of the news I get is on the internet. One thing about fox, they don't have a tingle down their leg for the destroyer in chief. That gives them a lot more credibility than any other 'legit' news organization.

What kind of person would be scared by having the news given to them unless it was another attack. Yes fox tells its viewers that obama has terrorist and racist friends. That is the truth. Can you dispute that. Hannity keeps harping on that. I get tired of hearing that too. We all know that and the Americans that voted for obama don't care.

I saw rachel maddow the first time a few months ago and caught her in a lie in a few seconds. I listened a few more minutes and couldn't handle her lies and bias and bigotry and general bullshit.

According to you, which news organization is 'legit"?

1) Let it never be said an "Anon" didn't fess up to a mistake. FP, you're right: I called out Dave for assuming he knows what I watch, while at the same time making an assumption about what you watch.

2) However: You rushed to the defense of FOX News; I didn't even mention CNN or Rachel Maddow.

3) The above does not change "haughty" charge, which is fine with me. Embrace it, celebrate it ... oh wait, you already do that.

4) Dave: I don't watch television news. For best business news, the Wall Street Journal; for foreign news (and, actually, some domestic news) I think BBC radio is the best.

One thing about fox, they don't have a tingle down their leg for the destroyer in chief...

Hey idiots! Wake up!

Librarians don't make "about $100K a year," and, more crucially, they don't pull "facts" out of their asses. See, that's what's up with youse--you act/judge/vote/rant based on a shitload of bogus assumptions.

And in so doing, you manage to screw *yourselves* by fighting against the wrong damn enemies.

News flash: You're not among the One Percent, and likely never will be. Not even close. Wake up and recognize who's truly vacuuming up the money.

Then your local Occupiers will welcome your energy with open arms, guaranteed.
