Meandering Thursday night post

Oregon bicycle enthusiasts in uproar over proposed ban on young children on bikes
(My proposed headline: Liberals realize that Democrats really do want to control every aspect of our lives)

House Bill 2228 introduced by Rep. Mitch Greenlick (D-Portland), would amend an Oregon statute that bans unlawful passengers on a bike by making it illegal to carry a child younger than 6 either on the bike or in a trailer. The bill includes a fine of $90.

"This is how the process starts," he said. "We have hearings. People start testifying. You start getting the information to find out whether there is a problem or not."

Another solution in search of a problem. Our citizen full time legislators introduce freedom killing bills for just for the sake of doing something. Rather than the starting point of "free people should go about their lives with as little interference from us as possible" they begin at "how can we make changes in the lives of our subjects?"

Every one of you who voted for annual sessions deserves this, the rest of us don't. Remember when they made changes to school zone speed limits that no one could understand? That was fun.

Here's a fun one from our new governor's webpage:

The Governor of the State of Oregon is committed to the right of all persons to work and advance on the basis of merit, ability, and potential. The Governor has delegated authority to the Director of the Affirmative Action Office to follow ORS 243.315.

The Director will assist in the implementation and monitor affirmative action plans in all state agencies. This will foster work environments that recruit, retain and promote employees who represent the broadest possible spectrum of society, which includes women, minorities, individuals with disabilities and all other protected classes.

So merit and ability count as long as your are the correct minority.

Mitch Greenlick: "He served as a Trustee of the Northwest Health Foundation for ten years through 2008. Mitch was elected to the National Academies of Science’s Institute of Medicine in 1971. Yes, Miglavs ... I remember when they made changes to school zone speed limits. I understand them perfectly well. Don't you? Then please do us and our children a favor: Don't drive near schools.

So I am not sure what the problem is. What are they trying to fix? Are there too many parents riding bikes and they want to stop them? What is the problem that requires a new law? Should we also ban parents from pushing children under the age of six in strollers? Why not just ban parents? Anyone have any clue what problem is supposedly being addressed by this proposal???

See, in the eyes of the left, having the right skin color is indeed a proof of merit.

The only thing our current society is telling us about skin color is that if you are brown, you will be pampered and catered to like royalty. Now lets wonder why they come here and have such a sense of entitlement. The immigration situation is like a hellish sweaty nightmare that our unconcious mind is desperate to overcome. The only difference is that we are awake and it is very much a reality. Mexico has spewed the acidic vomit of it's lower class all over America. Still, they wonder what the big deal is.

So the lack of an answer is no one knows what this is supposed to fix. Why are they doing this???

Well, I think it's a stupid idea too, but the obvious solution is one that Miglavs also objects to: More bike lines, better bike lanes. Which would give people a choice of safe transporation options. Miglavs hates "social engineering" intended to accomodate people on bikes; he prefers social engineering intended to get everyone into a car. Miglavs, if you want to spend the rest of your life watching a bigger and bigger percentage of your paycheck going to fill up your gas tank, be my guest. I think I'll use my bike.

Where's Daniel? Is he pulling double shifts at the JiffyLube?

So I'll ask one more time. Why? What problem are they trying to solve? Why stop parents from letting their young kids on the bike but their 6 year old kids are fine? What is the reason for this proposed law?

HELLO? It is RAINING non stop for months now, who in the F is riding a bike in this mess??

Well I drove (in my car) around Portland this week, many many miles, only saw 1 person riding a Bike and they looked pretty grouchy and uncomfortable.

What is this Big Brother push to ride bikes in an state where it rains 9 months a year dummies?

I don't have a problem with more bike lanes and better bike lanes as long the people riding bikes pay for it. Bike lanes should not be paid for by drivers. Bikes should also be licensed to cover maintenance costs for the new bike lanes.

We could also put GPS's on bikes so they can be charged per mile of use.

Well, I use my bike about 95 percent of the time, so I think my taxes should also be reduced accordingly, so I don't have to pay so much for the part of the pavement used by vehicles. I also think I should not have to pay so much taxes for sidewalks. I mean, when I walk down the sidewalk, it's not like I'm using the entire sidewalk. I should only have to pay taxes to pay for the cement that is directly beneath the soles of my shoes.

You have it completely wrong. Yo have not paid for any parts of the roads you are riding on. You are as bad as a thief. You need to pay an additional share. Gas taxes pay for most of the roads and I'm sure the bike paths you are riding on. You have not paid your fair share. I think we can also put tolls for bikes so they can pay for their share of the roads (bike paths, bike lanes, etc.). I think the GPS might be the best choice for bikes.

If you people who primarily ride bikes won't pay for the paths you use, then we should ban bike paths.

I think you should also pay an additional fee for helping to cause the global cooling. We need to warm up the planet by driving more to save it for our children. Older people and young babies are going to die because the planet is cooling off and they are going to freeze more. Why don't you want to pay your fair share and prevent grandma and baby dying?

I'm willing to pay for the cement in your head!

As long as we're talking about cement filling one's skull, maybe you could elaborate on how "global cooling" has caused this. Or how you square this theory of yours with this. Or what this is all about.
