Sign the "Statement of I'm here illegaly form!"
After finding out that DHS doesn't do complete background checks (or ignores the results) when placing children in foster care I'm very comforted that the State of Oregon Employement Department - Child Care Division allows potential childcare providers to sign a Statement of no Social Security Number form. (English version provided here, Spanish version is also available)
Of course we all know that Teddy Kulongoski and Lorna Youngs get all warm and fuzzy every time they use our tax dollars to print out a batch of the DMV version of the Statement of No Social Security Number.
And in yet another ringing endorsement of government being in control of all health care it's nice to see that the Oregon State Board of Nursing also allows applicants to sign a Statement of No Social Security Number form.
Susan "let's use the curriculum of third world countries" Castillo is also a fan. State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo announced today the policy for free and reduced price meals for students... (by "free" she means "expensive, but you all pay for it") Children in eligible households may receive meal benefits regardless of immigration status.
What do you need to get the "expensive, but you all pay for it" lunches? You guessed it:
The names of all household members, the amount and source of income received by each household member in the prior month, the signature of an adult household member and the social security number of the adult household member who signs the application (or a statement that the person has no social security number).
So criminals can take care of your children, be your nurse, get a drivers license and "expensive, but you all pay for it" meals all by signing a state form that indicates they are criminals.
This must be why Bill Bradbury says that asking people to prove citizenship to register to vote is a "solution in search of a problem." Clearly the problem could be solved with yet another "Statement of I'm here illegaly" form.

If you don't qualify for "art therapist" you can always try this one
Recreation Leader (Pottery)
Portland Parks and Recreation
Approximate Hourly Salary: $12.73 at entry - $18.37 after three years
(that 23% pay raise each year sounds about average for government work these days)
The Recreation Leader with a Pottery specialty is responsible for assisting, conducting, and administering pottery classes and programs; assisting in the recruitment, selection, and training of part-time pottery instructors; supervising volunteers and seasonal/casual staff.
One of these days I'm going to apply for one of these crackpot positions just so I can report on the interview process. Here's how I imagine it going:
Interviewer: So what makes you qualified for this position?
Me: No blood for oil!
Interviewer: You're hired.
In all fairness to my illegal alien readers who can't make a bong out of clay but can read the Spanish version of "Heather has two mommies" I will post this exciting opportunity for you with Multnomah County:
BILINGUAL SPANISH RAISING A READER LIBRARIAN
Salary: $22.34 - $27.49 hourly
The Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon is seeking applicants for a part-time (20 hours per week), grant-funded Bilingual Spanish Raising A Reader Librarian position.
The purpose of this position is to reach more Spanish-speaking families through the Raising A Reader Bookbag Program.
You can call it "grant funded" all you want but they still list the Cadillac benefits package for this position and duties such as "ordering of Spanish-language materials" are probably not included in the grant. I also don't see this person getting fired after the grant money runs out.

What bureaucracy?
Kulongoski gives hefty raise to state directors
Gov. Ted Kulongoski is giving out pay raises to state agency directors that are at least three times what rank and file state workers will get.
About 60 department heads will get pay raises of 21 to 24 percent over the next two years, Kulongoski told top agency brass on Monday. Nearly 4,800 state managers will see their salaries rise a smaller 11 to 16 percent.
That's a nice raise.
There are currently 421 State Job Announcements Posted
61 are under the category MANAGEMENT, ADMINISTRATIVE, and SUPERVISORY. This category is topped only by the Office girls, sorry "office specialists," which has 66. (Does each specialist need her own manager? That is special.
And for those of you paying attention, especially you "let's increase taxes for healthy kids" folks, they are still hiring for Music, Art or Recreational Therapist. $2,903 - $4,229 MONTHLY
To really put things in perspective so you realize how top heavy government is the DHS folks (I think that DHS is a Spanish acronym meaning "free stuff") have only 36 openings.

These people are nuts
Mike,
I have read about sanctuary cities. Did you want to ask the council if we wanted to become one? If yes, we might want to put it on the agenda for the next work session in June. Or, we could ask a group like NAACP to make a proposal. What do you want to do?
Stewart

Stewart
This is a city councilor casually asking if Corvallis could become a haven for criminals. He doesn't even seem to be completely aware of what he is talking about, just that this is the new liberal fad.
Hello Stewart-
I don't intend to make any proposal to the city council. What I would like to do is to have a public forum on the issue, with input from CPD about current policy on immigration issues...
...The target audience would be both the hispanic community and the "civil rights" advocacy community, in addition to policy makers like city council. We might eventually want to be a "sanctuary city," but there are probably other less radical steps we could take.
When folks who make public policy can openly discuss helping criminals I think that we have a problem in this country. Let's throw these bums out.

Because when every second counts the cops are only 5 minutes away
The Seattle Times weighs in:
No guns in school. Period.
Sympathy for an Oregon high-school teacher with a restraining order against an ex-husband ought not extend to allowing her to carry a gun to school.
The school could beef up security. Or the teacher could be given a paid leave while sorting out her personal problems. The restraining order could be strengthened or broadened for maximum protection.
There are solutions that don't require a gun in the classroom. The teacher has a concealed-carry permit but that doesn't give her the right to bring a gun to class.
If by "doesn't give her the right" they mean "she has the right under the United States Consition, the Oregon constition and the Oregon Revised Statutes."
And to say "sort out her personal problems" as if it is somehow her fault she has a stalker is absurd. This is more liberal claptrap that says the individual can't take care of herself, it takes a village. A village which has the dead and raped bodies of hundreds of women on it's collective hands. (try googling "restraining order death")
Here is Lars' piece from Human Events.

An ode to Theodore
Things from talk radio today:
I'm a big fan of Theodore. It's a classic moment when all three KXL show promos feature him getting shot down by three different hosts.
In fact, I'm a big fan of repeat callers in general. Especially the lefties. I miss Michael like you wouldn't believe and where is that guy who always complained that no one would hire him but when Lars would ask him what skills he had could only come up with things that he couldn't do?
As a duck hunter I'd like to take Lars to task for constantly referring to wetlands as "swamps." While I would never support eminent domain to create more waterfowl habitat I think that a solution such as the city of wherever turning to Ducks Unlimited to see if they could find an alternate site and make sure that it is open to public hunting. (I'm also a fan of the "no net loss" laws that say for every acre of public hunting land that is closed you must open an acre somewhere else, this probably does not affect this particular case since I doubt people are hunting by the airport.)
RE: the moron getting the taser.
When you resist arrest the cops will escalate force until you come into compliance. You don't get to offer to "just walk out" once you have already wrestled with the cops and they have you on the ground. Savage is dead wrong on this.
RE: the top and bottom of the hour news updates AKA the "what is OJ doing right now?"
Please... stop. It's making me long for the good old days of Brittany Spears and Paris Hilton updates.

Stop the nightmare
From NumbersUSA:
It will take 41 NO votes to kill the DREAM Act Amnesty (SA 2237) expected for a vote this week. At the beginning of this hour, only 18 Senators have committed to vote NO.
Smith is not on the confirmed "NO" list. Please contact him and tell him we don't need nightmare amnesty. You can use NumbersUSA free fax system or call 202-224-3121.

Schools have financial incetives for kids to run away
State’s Homeless Student Report: Homeless student population grows 18% as federal funding decreases 10%
Aaahhhh, we're all going to die. Quick, raise taxes, get more involvement from the state! No wait a second...
10,737 homeless students in Oregon reported sharing housing with relatives or friends due to economic hardship or similar reason
Ironically I think that we could describe most college kids as "homeless" under this definition as could anyone who shares an apartment with someone and splits the bills.
Imginary conversation:
Miss Crabapple - "Are you homeless Jimmy?"
Jimmy - "No but my Grandma lives with us..."
Miss Crabapple - "Wonderful my little homeless gold mine, we now get more money!"
And from the Register Guard story:
"Unaccompanied" youths, typically teens, are those who have been abandoned by their parents or have run away from home or foster care.
Parents who abandon their children should be arrested and charged. Kids who run away should not receive any support but should go back home. (and for those who say "but they ran away from an abusive home please refer back to the "arrested and charged" portion of this paragraph)
This is such crap and I don't buy any of it. The fact that every man-on-the-stree moron who was asked about this "statistic" attributed the "rise" to a "lack of affordable housing" just shows how powerful the liberal propaganda is.
How about: "are you homeless because your parents use meth?"

What color will you allow me to paint my house Kathy?
I just got a sad letter from farmer Kathy. You see, she was under the impression that we lived in the Sovient Union as was very upset by the notion that her neighbors might be able to use their property as they see fit. That's why she's supporting Measure 49. (referred to on this blog as the "we'll go back to not having property rights" measure)
First thing, Kathy does actually exist, I looked at satellite images of her farm.
Second she has some bad news: houses and agriculture "don't mix." She warns of "dust" and "smoke" and insists that people "like to see farms as they drive by" but that "living next to them is a different story."
This is your first clue that Kathy is a democrat. Only a democrat would assume that a developer would BUILD HOMES WHERE NO ONE WANTS TO LIVE. Government might do that but not those crazy profit making folks.
Shortly after warning that "farmers often live on slim profit margins" she laments that "small, indepentdent producers" will "go out of bussiness" if farmland turns into subdivisions.
I guess by "go out of bussiness" she means that the farmer will "make more money." This is like saying that my lemonade stand "went out of bussiness" when I transformed it into a car dealership. You can complain that you now have to go somewhere else for your lemonade but I'm pretty darn happy with this development.
I feel bad for Kathy. It must be one heck of a psychological complex she has if she thinks it is her place to tell her neighbors what they can and can't do with their property.

That important illegal alien constituency
In a First, a Candidate Forum in Translation
The first presidential forum to be conducted in Spanish placed a couple of the Democratic participants in an uncomfortable position Sunday night: answering tough questions while simultaneously fiddling to make sure their earpieces didn't fall out and they could the hear the translation of the next question.
Clinton noted that her campaign manager, Patti Solis Doyle, is a Latina, while Obama likened the work of labor activist Cesar Chavez to that of Martin Luther King Jr.
This is so stupid it's funny. Clinton does the classic that folks who are insecure about their racism do: "some of my best friends are black" except in this case it's "my campaign manager is latina."
How about judging people on their campaign managing skills rather than their ethnicity. And how about speaking English since only citizens can vote and it's a requirement of citizenship (naturalized citizenship requires this and if you were born here you can't escape it by the age of 18) that you speak English.

Seattle Speaks: What would you ask Hispanic day laborers?
Many stories have been written about the immigration issue. The goal of this series is to get to the people behind that issue.
So I won't be pressing them on their immigration status if they don't want to share it. I won't be interrogating them about taxes or social services. This is not to say these are not important questions. They are. But we want to show who they are as human beings, not as documented or undocumented immigrants.
Right now we have such hard hitting questions such as:
What would you like done to improve living and working conditions in your home country?
How different do you think your life is from the lives of the people driving by in luxury cars?
How happy are you here?
The author is asking for suggestions for other questions. I'm liking the suggestions that I already see posted there:
How do you feel when undocumented workers wave the Mexican flag or turn the US flag upside down?
Not that Monica will be asking such things but at least the Seattle PI will get the general sentiment of the people.
Thank you to Orbusmax (my homepage) for bringing my attention to this story.

I'm no fan of Rudy for prez and have been watching the "Real Rudy" stuff on YouTube. Bottom line: the guy is for gay marriage, tax payer funded abortions and gun control. Here is one interesting video.

PDC: Communism with better PR
Here we have the local news report (came from AP) on Hillary "Funded by fugitives" Clinton's Oregon steering committee.
Curiously, there is one name missing from the list on that report that is also on Hillary's commitee: John Russell, former chair of the Portland Development Commission.
For those of you who don't know what the PDC does I guess that you have somehow missed the congestion, high housing prices and the slow transition of Portland to a sort of "Netherlands West" if the Netherlands was run by Hugo Chavez. (I think that Chavez, much like Tom Potter, only follows the laws that he likes rather than "the laws as they are written")
"Our Mission is to bring together resources to achieve Portland’s vision of a diverse, sustainable community with healthy neighborhoods, a vibrant central city, a strong regional economy, and quality jobs and housing for all."
I'll translate the buzz words:
PDC: diverse, sustainable, central city
Real speak: We want gays who recycle, take government transportation and will live packed like sardines.
PDC: economy, quality jobs and housing for all
Real speak: We want government to pick the winners and losers (Ikea gets a tax subsidy, Wal-Mart gets sued) and we will provide government housing for heroin addicts
I guess that the scariest part of this is that the former head of a quasi-government agency (all the tax dollars, none of the accountability) is such a partisan activist that he is on the steering committee of the democrat front runner for president.
If the general manager for a local Wal-Mart (or pick your bussiness) was on the steering committee for Mitt Romney you can bet this would be a big deal in the media.

Kids protest being grounded
Mexico Blasts U.S. Immigration Policies
President Felipe Calderon blasted U.S. immigration policies on Sunday and promised to fight harder to protect the rights of Mexicans in the U.S., saying "Mexico does not end at its borders."
He also reached out to the millions of Mexicans living in the United States, many illegally, saying: "Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico."
First off, the "where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico" bit seems to be counterintuitive. If that was the case then most Mexicans would be constantly on the move since once they stopped, looked around and realized they were still in Mexico they would get up and try to leave again. That speaks volumes about your leadership Calderon.
Then I'm wondering where are all the good indymedia boys who whine about imperialism? Obviously the do-nothing politicians won't say anything in response to this provocation. Certainly not any "top tier" candidate for president will address the fact that a foreign leader just indicated that his countries sovereignty extends into our borders.
When the folks on the other side tell us what they really think we are advised to take them seriously.

The customer is always wrong
The "working conditions" listed on a job info posting for an ODFW LICENSE SERVICES REPRESENTATIVE:
Works daily, in person and on the telephone, with the public who may be angry, confused, or upset.
I can't imagine why the public would be "angry, confused or upset." (see previous post on the lack of availability of hunting regs)
And while I realize that "the public" is stupid and should bow down to our PERS receiving overlords, might I make the timid suggestion that if us peons are always having the whole confused/angry thing then maybe you guys in government are doing something wrong?
Bring on Hillarycare.
