Couple charged in Seattle with gay immigration fraud
A federal grand jury in Seattle has charged two people in an alleged immigration fraud conspiracy, saying they advised straight immigrants to claim homosexuality in applying for political asylum.
According to an indictment unsealed Tuesday, the Mahoneys in at least three cases advised immigrants to falsely claim that they feared persecution for homosexuality if they returned to their home country.
It's kind of like that office joke that says when the boss calls you into his office and you know you are about to get fired you just need to quickly blurt out "I'm gay" before he says anything.
This is the problem with treating a behavior as a civil right. How do you prove or disprove a claim? Do you demand to see a homosexual act?
They are like "guest worker" programs except they don't give amnesty to current criminals.

Oregon was once a sanctuary for illegal immigrants from neighboring states to gain driver licences. However, with the recent addition to Senate Bill 1080, which initially passed in February 2008, Oregon is taking steps to make it more difficult for those people to obtain licenses.
Immigration Specialist Helpline Consultant Mario Hernandez believes the new law is increasingly degrading to illegal immigrants who he said are not only left without a legal means of transportation, but are also crippled in their search for jobs, many of which require licences.
The final installation of the three-part law will go into effect Jan. 1, 2010 and will allow the DMV to issue licenses for the length of an immigrant's stay, rather than issuing a license to be valid for eight years.
The Daily Emerald is reporting this story a little late but it's always fun to find a story where someone is quoted about illegal aliens being "degraded" and "unable to look for work" which they can't legally perform.

An Oregon Supreme Court justice has recommended that the court review the constitutionality of the death penalty.
Justice Martha Walters wrote in a concurring opinion on a Portland case that the court should consider Oregon's experience with the death penalty and again examine its constitutionality.
Maybe Justice Walters is confused but the constitutionality of this issue has been settled for quite some time. But liberals seems to treat laws they don't like the same way they treat elections they don't win: keep counting until they get their way.
Let's not sentence the worst offenders in Oregon to a lifetime of cable tv, card games and walks in the yard. Let's punish and deter future crime with the death penalty.

Free electronics recycling starts up in Oregon
Heads up If you're getting rid of junk today: This is the first weekend that you can recycle your old televisions, computers and computer monitors for free in Oregon.
Skip to final paragraph.
Electronics manufacturers are paying for the program.
I'll admit that I am going to use this new law, the difference is that I know it's not "free." I will pay for it the next time I buy a computer monitor, television, etc. Maybe someone who works for an electronics company paid for it by being laid off.
When the end user sees no cost it's not hard to convince them that something is "free." This program, like so many other "free" programs, will result in some people paying less than their share and others picking up the burden.
There may be some excellent reasons for government to force electronics companies to incur the cost of recycling these items but please, don't call it free.

The Big Bad 2009 post
I look forward to your witty one-line new years resolutions in the comments section. (for a couple of you it may be "I will stop talking about Daniel's nipples...")
Some things to think about for next year:
Minimum wage earners just received an undeserved raise. If your skills or labor were more valuable you wouldn't need the government to force your employer to pay you more.
The book "Mama voted for Obama" has been released and will probably be coming toKindergarten class 6th grade reading class at a public school near you.
In the "our homeless are better than your homeless" category; Dignity Village has release a Tent Cities Toolkit which is an "organizing tool focused on issues of homelessness and the role of grassroots, democratic tent cities as a necessary step to resolving homelessness."
This involves "connecting housed and unhoused activists worldwide into a cohesive political force for effective social change."
Anyone who read that without laughing out loud has no sense of humor.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum urged Palestinian groups to use "all available means, including martyrdom operations" -- a reference to suicide bombings in Israel -- to "protect the Palestinian people."

Hamas, which won a parliamentary election in 2006 but was shunned by the West over its refusal to renounce violence and recognize Israel, estimated at least 180 members of its security forces had been killed with at least 15 women and some children.
How many times can a terrorist organization be quoted in a single news article? And they are taken seriously. These are the people who blow themselves up at shopping centers. I keep hearing on the news that people are asking Israel to "avoid civilian casualities" when Hamas' tactic is to target civilians.
Let's hope that Obama will encourage Israel to defend herself from these animals.

McCain still doesn't get it

"If President Obama wants it to be a highest priority, I'm prepared to join in," McCain said. "If not, I'm not going to go out there, out front, because it's obvious it won't succeed unless we get the administration in the lead."
"If somebody's been here for a long period of time and been good citizens, they've worked hard in their community and at their job — look, it's reality and there's not 12 million pairs of handcuffs in America," he said.
We also can't arrest 12 million burglars, drunk drivers or rapists at the same time but we can arrest them when we catch them. It's actually even easier to deal with the illegal aliens because we can deny them things like employment with relative ease.

Sunday night complaint
As it was explained to me earlier, the news is written "for everyone." I would assume that this includes Obama voters. So I guess that it makes sense that KPTV actually put up a bullet point list that suggested the following:
Dress warmly
Stay dry
Eat healthy and responsibly
Don't walk on ice
Needless to say this completely ruined my plans to eat irresponsibly and unhealthily tonight. In the day and age of the "WARNING: do not hit self in head" labels on hammers I still wonder why my local news has to suggest that I "dress warmly" when it's snowing out.

I can't believe voters want to enforce the law
ACLU, activists sue Columbia County over illegal workers measure
The American Civil Liberties Union joined with state and local worker activists Thursday to jointly file a lawsuit in Columbia County Circuit Court aimed at scuttling a measure passed in November that would make it a crime for employers inside the county to hire illegal aliens.
Um, it was already a crime for employers to hire illegal aliens. The problem was that there was no one enforcing the law at the federal level.
The measure would require employers to verify the legality of their employees through E-Verify, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security-operated database where employers can input data, such as Social Security information, and retrieve information regarding a person’s legal status to work in the United States.
Everyone who gets a job must "prove" that they are legally eligible to work. This means that they fill out Form I-9. E-Verify just gives employers the ability to make sure that the information given on that form is not fraudulent.
It also gives everyday citizens the assurance that their Social Security Number isn't being used by an illegal alien for work purposes.
So a measure that increases employment opportunities for eligible workers and prevents ID theft is being opposed by the ACLU and a few folks who think that enforcing the law equals "intolerance."

Oregon's top business leaders are weighing in on one of the state's touchiest tax issues: recommending that the state divert at least some of the popular kicker tax rebates into a rainy day fund to help protect schools from budget cuts.
Leaders of several of the state's most influential companies included the proposal to curtail the tax rebates in a series of recommendations they will make today at the annual Oregon Leadership Summit in Portland.
The summit, organized by the Oregon Business Council, brings together hundreds of members of the state's business and political elite and has been a powerful force in recent years for building consensus on a range of governmental policies.
Gov. Ted Kulongoski is focused on his other tax-raising priorities but says the kicker is an issue "the Legislature should grapple with," said his spokeswoman, Anna Richter Taylor.
Our ruling benefactors who know how to spend our money better than we do hate the kicker not just because we get to keep more of what we earned, they hate it because they had their greedy little paws on it and then had to give it back.
They imagine all the programs they could have created, all the political support they could have bought and the choices they could have made for us. But instead of a new "commission on culturual competency" the lowly peasants of Oregon get to spend the fruits of their labor on what they think is best for themselves and their families.

A double blast of cold air is expected to hit Western Oregon on Friday, and again Sunday, with snow all the way down to the Willamette Valley floor on Sunday.

Dems really care about workers
Urge the Senate to Extend E-Verify
Last week the Department of Labor issued a grim report on the state of jobs in America. More than 500,000 Americans lost their job in November and more than 2 million so far in 2008. In response, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith (R-Texas) issued a statement urging the Senate to pass a long-term extension of E-Verify. Take action now by calling and/or faxing your Senator and asking them to add an amendment to the auto industry bailout to attach H.R. 6633.
Just yesterday I went to a local fast food restraunt and they had the "this employer participates in E-Verify" sign on their door. That's a restraunt where your kids or my kids would have a chance at employment.
E-Verify is a voluntary program that allows employers to make sure they are only hiring LEGAL WORKERS.
Next year we will have a congress that won't care about American jobs being stolen, make those phone calls/faxes/emails today!!

Illegal rapes, Oregonian ignores
Beaverton rape suspect may have more victims, police say
Police say a man accused of raping a 19-year-old woman at gunpoint may have other victims after officers found assorted women's underwear in his Beaverton apartment.
Silvestre Cervantes-Avila, 21, is accused of the Nov. 10 assault on the woman.
Police obtained a search warrant for his apartment and found large amounts of drugs, the gun and several pairs of women's underwear, leading investigators to suspect there may be more sexual-assault victims, Yazzolino said.
He's now in the Washington County jail with an ICE hold. Now I know that it is not newsworthy that he's here illegaly, that's why the Oregonian didn't see fit to print that. They even deleted the comment that someone left questioning his immigration status on their website.

Police say a man accused of raping a 19-year-old woman at gunpoint may have other victims after officers found assorted women's underwear in his Beaverton apartment.
Silvestre Cervantes-Avila, 21, is accused of the Nov. 10 assault on the woman.
Police obtained a search warrant for his apartment and found large amounts of drugs, the gun and several pairs of women's underwear, leading investigators to suspect there may be more sexual-assault victims, Yazzolino said.
He's now in the Washington County jail with an ICE hold. Now I know that it is not newsworthy that he's here illegaly, that's why the Oregonian didn't see fit to print that. They even deleted the comment that someone left questioning his immigration status on their website.

A government program sends foreign nationals who commit crimes back to their home countries.
More than 10,000 criminal illegal immigrants have been deported this year from the Pacific Northwest, according to officials.

But for a lot of Jackson County immigrants they've lived here most of their lives and now say they will have little if anything when they get back to their home countries.
Rafel Avina says he's just here because we wants to stay close to his five kids.

3. If you had a job, whose SSN did you use?
4. Do you feel bad about stealing someone's identity? Ruining their credit and messing up their tax return?

Every day last winter, Thomas Sexton left his high school guidance counselor's office at 1 p.m. and went to the nearby Albertsons in South Eugene. He stood outside and asked anyone coming in or out, "Excuse me, do you have any spare change?"
Panhandling is a last resort for most, but a study by the Public Broadcasting Service and published online found the practice can be a lucrative activity that often earns thousands of dollars per year in large cities.
Begging may not be a career, but the homeless said it should be treated like a job.
"Back then," he said, "it was all for drugs."
Besides paying for food and cigarettes, his panhandling money is currently going toward a big splurge - a night in a hotel.
The death of shame in this country is amazing. Imagine waking up and saying to yourself: "I'm on welfare and I beg for money... I should do an interview with the local college newspaper!"
That the Daily Emerald has a sidebar for "What makes a panhandle successful" makes me wonder if they are trying to tell their students something. They actually have this as a tip:

The fact that the state of Oregon has ONCE AGAIN posted the job opening for "Art therapist" shows stupidity and a lack of need for more of our money.

Art is a luxury we can't afford right now
The Percent for Art legislation, passed in 1975, guides the acquisition of Oregon's State Art Collection which includes more than 2,500 original art works.
Oregon Revised Statutes sets aside "not less than 1% of the direct construction funds of new or remodeled state buildings with construction budgets of $100,000 or greater for the acquisition of art work which may be an integral part of the building, attached thereto, or capable of display in other State Buildings".
This art, titled "Keystone" sits outside the public safety training academy. It's time for the legislature to focus on public safety with our scarce tax dollars, not worthless bronze sculptures.
You are going to hear a lot about the need for new taxes in the next session, just remember, they will use your money to buy stuff like this.

Eco nut enjoys yoga in prison
The latest from Tre - 11/18/08
Greetings from Herlong, CA. This place is positioned in a valley with mountains surrounding in all directions. Gorgeous sunrises and sunsets have blessed me while sitting barefoot in the grass they only recently planted. Up until about a month and half ago it was all dirt and rocks.
A yoga class is offered 5 days a week as well as Pilates and other fitness/wellness modalities. There is even a wellness library.
On the recreation yard (which is where I spend most of my time) there is a huge dirt walkin' path (twice around is a mile). In the center are 2 baseball/softball fields, a full soccer field, 3 basketball courts, 6 handball/racquetball courts, a volleyball pit, horseshoe pit, exercise bars and equipment and 2 bocci lawns (my Italian ancestors will be very pleased). There is an indoor rec. hall with a basketball court, many cardio machines, a ping pong table, fitness rooms (where we do yoga), an arts and crafts room and best of all... a music/band room.

Three basketball courts... $0
Realizing that this is a letter from a prison inmate who was convicted of domestic terrorism... priceless.
My only consolation is that he can't get vegan meals.

Criminals sue, win
The federal government plans to give legal status to certain unauthorized immigrants who applied for a 1986 amnesty program but were either unfairly excluded or never received a response to their request.
It's not known just how many unauthorized immigrants will qualify, but the number is thought to be about 10,000, said Sharon Rummery, a CIS spokeswoman in the San Francisco regional office.
"It's about time there was a resolution for the over 10,000 immigrants who were in immigration legal limbo because of the inefficiencies of the immigration office," he said. "Hopefully this will be the beginning not only for those who were not allowed to apply in 1986, but also any future legalizations for the millions that still have not be able to adjust their immigration status."
In completely unrelated news...
But at least this proves that amnesty is a sweet deal that wouldn't result in complicated litigation that makes citizens out of criminals decades after the fact.

Mid-morning on Wednesday, many University students found the alarmingly titled "Campus Crime Alert" waiting in their e-mail inbox. As requested by the University's Department of Public Safety, the message was sent out to all residence hall occupants and publicized the attempted abduction of a female student that occurred late Sunday, Nov. 9.
A former music major, Knowles often walked past Pioneer Cemetery on the way to the music building and rarely saw patrols near the area. Larkin, the DPS officer, cautioned, "At night, I would avoid the graveyard at all costs." Two of the recent incidents have occurred around the cemetery.
DPS suggests that students walk in large groups along well-lit paths that are frequented by other people. Larkin also urges students to call an Assault Prevention Shuttle, a DPS escort or even a taxi for late-night trips home.
Why are students over the age of 21 not encouraged to carry a firearm to protect themselves? I'd love to see what happens to the on campus crime stats the month following an attempted rapist getting shot.
I know the school is very busy teaching queer theories but maybe take an hour break for a CHL class sometime.

A 4% bilingual pay premium will be added in addition to the base pay.
The Family Involvement Coordinator is responsible for the day–to-day operation of the Family Involvement/Parent Education portion of the new 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant that will serve Lynch Wood Elementary School.
Conduct home visits, as needed, to help remove barriers and enable families to access needed services. Develop strong referral system within 21 LCC coordinators to serve both parents and children. Develop and maintain sound, accurate record keeping & documentation systems including use of a database.
In a nutshell: Through the government school you will find Spanish speaking families, go to their homes to make sure they are getting all the welfare they can and then make a database tracking that information.
At least in this case I probably can't complain about government "tracking US citizens" with that database...

Diversity is never having to be around a white person

Each day, University senior Josué Peña-Juarez carries more with him than meets the eye. He walks tall, brown glasses over his dark eyes, smile on his face as he immerses himself into everyday University culture.
The San Diego native grew up primarily speaking Spanish at home and received a bilingual education at school. Peña-Juarez said he constantly felt comfortable, surrounded by other students of color and other native Spanish speakers.
"We moved in the middle of winter," Peña-Juarez said. "I was forced to speak English; there was no one who looked like me. There was no one to speak Spanish with, so I spoke English." Peña-Juarez identifies most with being Chicano, in terms of social, political and cultural consciousness, he said.
Imagine a University student saying that he only "feels comfortable" when surrounded by other white students. This MEChA intern is upset that diversity isn't engaging in enough discussion about diversity.
How about this: it's not "diversity" to only feel "comfortable" with a group of people who share your ethnic background. If you don't think that the University of Oregon doesn't discuss diversity enough at this point maybe the problem is you. The rest of us are sick of this overused buzzword.

A booby trap for illegal immigration
Harder to see perhaps is something President Bush pursued that was savvy, farsighted, humane and very, very right.
The president from a border state tried, in vain, to get our nation to wrap its mind around the reality of 12 million illegal immigrants living in our midst.
Unfortunately, last year, a comprehensive reform effort fizzled in Congress.
And if we hold people accountable for breaking the law then the sun will stop shining, the oceans will dry up and and Dora the Explorer might get cancelled. The Oregonian makes bizzare statements about how "state tax revenues would decline by roughly half a billion dollars a year" unless we grant amnesty.
For the sake of argument lets pretend that I agree with that. What's their point? If you are a cash benefit to The State it's ok to break the law? How much economic activity is caused by meth?
Once you accept the premise that industry performance, employment numbers and tax revenue are more important than society living under a set of agreed upon rules then you open the can of worms labeled anarchy.
Which industry can't perform if they follow all the EPA rules? What about the business that could survive if they pay less than minimum wage? Do you want to lose those jobs, lose that industry and hurt tax revenue? Then let them break the law.

He found a rationale?
Oh no, Obama's secret service detail is carrying... an "assault rifle!" But he hates those and said “It’s hard for me to find a rationale for having a 17-clip semiautomatic.” I guess "saving your life" isn't a good enough rationale. Last night was truly a historic occasion: For only the second time in her adult life, Michelle Obama was proud of her country!
This was such an enormous Democratic year that even John Murtha won his congressional seat in Pennsylvania after calling his constituents racists. It turns out they're not racists -- they're retards.
Republicans lost this presidential election, and I don't blame the messenger; I blame the message. How could Republicans go after B. Hussein Obama (as he is now known) on planning to bankrupt the coal companies when McCain supports the exact same cap and trade policies and earnestly believes in global warming?

There are still some results waiting to be tallied in Oregon but there isn't much for me to be happy about yesterday. Looking forward I plan to keep these ideas in mind:
1. I still have a voice that has been used in the past to successfuly voice opposition to things like amnesty. I will continue to use that voice.
2. I honesty believe that Obama's ideas are bad and will have negative consequences. We have one party rule in Washington so they will get all the blame.
3. I have a 2 month window to purchase all the firearms I want.
4. I think that in response to some of Obama's very extreme plans we will see the opposition party return to some of it's principles that made me choose to be a Republican in the first place.
5. People get the government they deserve. If Oregon wants to double tax income, ask governments permission so that you can build a new deck, pay teachers regardless of performance and refuse to lock up criminals, then I don't know what to say.

Barack Obama's aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.
It was not immediately clear how Onyango might have qualified for public housing with a standing deportation order.
Please please please, let this open a discussion on illegal immigration and amnesty in the presidential election. Deport her tomorrow so that Obama can come out strong for blanket amnesty and defend taxpayer services for illegals.

Please please please, let this open a discussion on illegal immigration and amnesty in the presidential election. Deport her tomorrow so that Obama can come out strong for blanket amnesty and defend taxpayer services for illegals.

Barack Obama did not know a relative was living in the United States illegally for the past nearly four years prior to today's Associated Press report, "but obviously believes that any and all appropriate laws be followed," the campaign said Saturday in a statement.
All "appropriate" laws should be followed. I guess that the inappropriate ones can be ignored.

I want to be a scab
I had never wanted to be a union member until the other day when I drove past the striking Boeing workers. They had a giant "scab of the month" banner naming one of their co-workers who, and this is shocking, decided to keep working to support himself. I want my name on a banner like that.
For a long time I've thought that if you wanted to do something positive for taxpayers, gun owners, property owners, unborn babies and children the best thing you could do in Oregon was weaken the unions. Kari Chisholm (who hates black people, I keep saying it so it must be true) really proved my point:
You can't be a progressive unless you're pro-labor
The good folks of organized labor are the only people putting substantial and sustained resources into fighting for progressive policies.
If we didn't have organized labor fighting for progressive policies and Democratic candidates, we'd have lost the battle long, long ago.
But to point out that unions are not always self serving, Chisholm does note that unions actively work to elect people who will screw them:
If we get universal health care in this country, it's highly likely that individual union members will pay more and get less than they get under their current negotiated contracts.
And yet, everywhere you turn, it's organized labor that's leading the grassroots fight for universal health care.
Keep that in mind when you vote on your ballot measures that deal with unions and the public money they use to campaign for socialism.

The event will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the PCUN office, 300 Young St. For information, call (503) 935-9204.

Police today said 38 officers responded Saturday to a birthday party that turned into a riot, in what Gresham police are saying is the city's largest melee in almost 20 years.
The riot stemmed from a Quinceanera, a celebration for a Latina turning 15. Police said more than 100 people attended the party, and many appeared intoxicated.
The event was held at GSI Community Center, 1493 N.E. Cleveland Ave., where police have been called 20 times in the past 18 months. Officers said they have been assaulted there six times.
The news report last night absolutely refused to mention that this is a Mexican cultural thing. The online text version of that newscast can be seen here. Sounds like this was just a cultural misunderstanding and the officers who responded, and where assaulted for their trouble, should probably get some diversity training.

Lane Transit District has proposed a plan to cut its total services by 15 percent, a move that could eliminate 13 routes, raise fares and affect thousands of University staff and students.
The cuts come at a time when more people are using LTD services than ever before, Eyster said. The LTD Board will vote on the proposed changes in November.
This is a perfect example of government running things. Offer up a service that is not paid for by the end user, run short of money, make life difficult for those people who chose to become dependent on government.
Depending on government for your transportation is a bad idea, depending on government for your health care could be fatal.

I don't know where to begin
With new reports showing a huge increase in crime relating to and around medical marijuana it was time for our lawmakers to step up to the plate and do something... like participate in the Oregon Medical Cannabis Awards 2008.
Both Representatives Peter Buckley and Ben Cannon will be in attendence according to the advertisement for the show.
And what a show it will be. When last years "winner" was described as "a very well-groomed bud with a pleasant aroma, not too rough on the lungs, and great taste and potency" and the addition this year of hemp-based wedding dresses, this is THE place to rub elbows with the upper crust of society.
And just in case you thought elected officials would be the only folks showing support for smoking narcotics fear not, taxpayer funded DHS will be there and has gone in the past (.mp3) to give talks on the "rules" about marijuana.
And of course last year "[a]ttorneys in attendance earned 4 CLE credits from the Oregon State Bar for their participation."

The great debate
Wishful thinking on my part: Things I would like to hear McCain say tonight.
I was wrong about amnesty, since the slowdown of the economy I have recognized that importing cheap labor hurts the American worker and exporting millions of dollars to Mexico hurts local business.
The second amendment has nothing to do with hunting, it has to do with keeping all potentially tyrannical governments in check and personal defense.
I support a woman's righ to choose... where to send her children to school under a voucher system.
I don't lower taxes because they help stimulate the economy, that's just a pleasant side effect. I support lower taxes because it is morally wrong to take 50% of someone's hard earned money no matter how much they make. Economic freedom means not having the fruits of your labor go to needle exchange programs which my opponent supports.

I guess that they forgot to tell the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals but someone did predict that the illegal alien home loans would turn out badly:
Of the loans made to Latinos in 2005 and 2006, 1 in 12 will end in foreclosure.
In 2008 we expect to see approximately 20,000 foreclosures a week.
Foreclosure rates have not yet peaked in Hispanic communities.
So who made these statements? It was La Raza at their A Stronger America Together: Advocating for Latino Families event. But with all the business sense of the average socialist this same group insists on pushing these mortgages anyways and strives for a "Fair Housing System that Works for Latinos."
The whole "borrow money and then pay it back" system seemed to be working just fine to me.

Why are all the Oregon liberals in a tizzy about his video being distributed as an advertisement in Sunday's Oregonian? Richard Dawkins is great for bashing Christians but if a group shows what radical Islam is about we have some sort of "hate mongering?"

Under Clinton, the entire federal government put massive pressure on banks to grant more mortgages to the poor and minorities. Clinton's secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Andrew Cuomo, investigated Fannie Mae for racial discrimination and proposed that 50 percent of Fannie Mae's and Freddie Mac's portfolio be made up of loans to low- to moderate-income borrowers by the year 2001.
Threatening lawsuits, Clinton's Federal Reserve demanded that banks treat welfare payments and unemployment benefits as valid income sources to qualify for a mortgage. That isn't a joke -- it's a fact.
Now, at a cost of hundreds of billions of dollars, middle-class taxpayers are going to be forced to bail out the Democrats' two most important constituent groups: rich Wall Street bankers and welfare recipients.
The solution to a government created problem is not more government.
In the mainstream media and around the watercooler I don't hear people talking about what the private sector might do to solve this or how government could remove themselves from the equation to allow private investment to work it's magic.

You made a bad CHOICE
I live in House District 26 and have gotten the Matt Winguard mailer regarding his 2001 Assualt 4 conviction for "thumping" his child on the head.
I took two things into consideration at the time: seven years had gone past and I believe that we are overzealous these days in what we consider "abuse" of our kids.
One of the abuses was something that I would consider normal for Cub Scouts:
Wingard took the 7 year old on a two-day, 18 mile hike, walking fast and at times leaving the child behind and not allowing for rest.
That being said, I am now having some serious reservations about the guy. This is an exchange from his interview with KATU (and yes, I'm borrowing from BlueOregon here)
Interviewer: Why did you hit him on the head?
Wingard: It was just a dumb mistake.
Int: What were you thinking at the time?
Wingard: I wasn't. I mean I think when you make a dumb mistake like that you aren't thinking.
What a childish answer. If you said "I made a horrible choice, I was wrong, I've done what I can to make amends and it's not who I am today" that would be different.
Take full responsibility for your actions, explain to us your position today and move forward. We'll decide if that is good enough.

In case you thought it was just one or two nuts in Portland that want to force you to walk, bike or take the bus with that really pleasant smelling guy in the back here is a collection of government pages with the phrase "out of their cars" in it:

But I don't LIKE you
I hate election time. It's that horrible time when Democrats make me actually want to support Republicans I can't stand.
The NRA sent me a Gordon Smith bumper sticker yesterday and I've actually considered slapping it on my car! Any other time of year I can't stand Gordon Smith.
But when I get out of my emotional fervor where I start listing all the reasons why Smith does not deserve my vote let alone my support and I think about the election in practical terms:
Smith is our only statewide elected Republican
Smith will at least support our judges
Smith may not be an R but he does count towards which party has the majority
Smith may have voted for amnesty but he has turned around (sort of) and Merkley will vote for amnesty and then give our new guests welfare
At least Smith won't vote to take my guns
Not a ringing endorsement but just like Obama makes McCain look palatable, Merkley is making Smith look like a bargain for Oregon. After the election I can go back to disliking him for another 5 1/2 years.

Merkley's party to punishing criminals: oppose

Measure 61: Creates mandatory minimum prison sentences for certain theft, identity theft, forgery, drug, and burglary crimes.

Measure 62: Amends constitution. Allocates 15% of lottery proceeds to public safety fund for crime prevention, investigation, prosecution.

So that's where the dems stand on crime this November. It's pretty black and white: send criminals to jail? NO. Using money for public safety instead of, for instance, public art? NO.
And don't talk to me about the legislature referred alternative to punishing criminals. Normal people want criminals segregated from society where they can't victimize us, democrats want them to have "treatment" in our backyards while making sure not to hurt their self-esteem.

CAUSAnuts know big words
Most of the CAUSAnuts can't speak a lick of English which just makes it that much funnier when they write letters to the editor trying to use big words to justify lawbreaking.
“Unfortunately, extremists are less about enacting true, meaningful immigration reform and more about confusing an already complicated issue in order to push their own agenda and ideals."
Speaking as an "extremist" I am not only "less" about enacting "meaningful" immigration reform and more about enforcing the law. I know that is complicated.
Let me explain it: In America we have laws, you break them or you don't. If you break them you get punished.
I realize that this might be very different than in Mexico. There you break a law and you have the "complicated issue" of how much to bribe the law enforcement officer (there probably should be air quotes around that one) or how to breathe while lying in a puddle of your own blood.
My "agenda" and "ideals" involve DON'T BREAK OUR LAWS.

Back to school, back to Mexico and back to school again
Are you an illegal alien student who travels between Oregon and Mexico with great frequency?
Do you need to mule in some more meth for classmates but don't want that "absent" on your permanent record?
Or maybe the border patrol kept you from coming for the first day of school.
Well never fear because now our tax dollars have the solution:
BINATIONAL TRANSFER DOCUMENT
An outgrowth of Mexico's National Education System, the Transfer Document contains academic and health information on binational migrant students. It also is used as a binational report card with educational enrollment information that allows migrant students from Mexico to enter their local public school after the starting date.
It's the "tardy slip" that says "I would have been on time but I got deported."

39 percent raise proposed for Ore. Governor
Many of Oregon’s public servants will get huge raises next year if a commission tasked with examining their pay gets its way.
The Oregon Public Official’s Compensation Commission recommends raises ranging from 22 to 54 percent.
It calls for raises of 39-percent for the Secretary of State, the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Labor Commissioner.
I love the campaign commercials that compare how much we spend in Iraq (you know, that place we fight the terrorists so we can have seven years of no attacks on American soil) to how much healthcare/groceries it could buy a "working family."
How about how many bags of groceries could a working family buy with the raise money going to the our benefactors in state government?

Mexican cartel blamed for Oregon reservation pot
Officials say a Mexican drug cartel turned remote patches of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation into vast marijuana plantations the past two growing seasons.
Two Mexicans suspected of tending nearly 7,000 plants were arraigned Thursday in U.S. District Court in Portland.
I'm hoping that Oregon's nursery industry helps pay for these illegal aliens defense because they obviously have good experience tending to plants.

Tom Wenning calls himself a liberal and says he disagrees with conservative commentator Lars Larson on just about every issue.
Except one.
Several times a week, Wenning stages a one-man protest outside Portland's taxpayer-sponsored day laborer hiring center. He opposes illegal immigration, and thinks the city is promoting it by giving day laborers, many of them undocumented workers, a place to seek work.
Good for you Tom. I sure wish this story had a quote from some city leaders. Imagine "citizens should back off while we allow criminals to break more laws..."

A novel idea
Oregon should help employers follow the law
Brad Avakian, the new commissioner of Oregon's Bureau of Labor and Industries, has a sensible idea: Help employers follow the law before they run afoul of it.
After all, state and federal labor laws cover myriad details, such as what questions prospective employers can ask, how workers must be paid and when it's legal to fire them.
Employers who break the law risk fines of $1,000 or more. If workers go to court and win, the cost of misunderstanding labor law can be heavy indeed.
Noticeabley lacking: how to avoid hiring illegal aliens who are not eligible to work. I sure would like to see more workplace whistleblowers with regards to illegal labor practices that hurt American workers.

A Mexican prosecutor says an Oregon tourist drowned in his own blood while in police custody.
Sam Botner of Yancalla, Oregon, was arrested on Aug. 27 in the resort of San Jose del Cabo and was later found dead in a jail cell. Prosecutors say a surveillance video shows officers beating Botner.

Knocking down the doors of the undocumented
Washington Country is now cracking down on the undocumented!! Their method is "door-to-door license compliance checking" and fines of up to $500 will be levied on those without the proper documentation to be in the county!!
I'm talking of course about dogs. Illegal aliens will still receive the usual welfare and a blind eye from law enforcement.

A minority hiring program that was criticized last year for providing special treatment to racially diverse faculty is now under federal investigation.
Since August, the United States Department of Justice has been investigating whether the Underrepresented Minority Recruitment Program is in violation of Title Seven of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prohibits employers from discriminating against an individual on the basis of race.
The University of Oregon is using your tax dollars to violate the civil rights act. The openly discriminate on the basis of race. They pay employees different salaries based on race. And when they get called on it the whining about diversity starts.
