Habla this

KATU has a quick poll on the right sidebar of their webpage.

Do you think that English should be the official language of Oregon?
Yes.
No.

Obviously the correct answer is yes.

Thank you very much to Rep Donna Neslon for starting this dialogue by introducing a bill that would do just that.

Press 1 for English, press 2 if you don't habla the English and want to be disconnected.

Tancredo, the best thing for America right now, along with constant ICE raids!

Did you hear K-2's teaser line at the front of the news show "We will tell you who is behind the movement to make English the official language of Oregon."

"Behind the movement" as if it was some dark and sinister plot and they were to reveal the secret parties!

Damn, 92% of the poll responders have been discovered.

I don't understand, why do we need an official language?

You have got to be kidding?

Do you want every government publication or signage in every possible language? That's a lot of money wasted right there.

The other day my wife had to report for jury duty. One of her fellow jurists was a person who spoke only Spanish and had to have an interpreter to translate for her.

Now what kind of crap is that?

Scottie, Only U.S. Citizens can be on a Jury. It is law that you must speak English to be a Citizen. How did this guy get an interpreter?

Not entirely true Rick.

Immigrants are given a test which demonstrates that you can speak and write in English. But that doesn't demonstrate your proficiency … just a basic understanding of the language. Back in the day … I could have passed a similar exam in Mandarin but that doesn’t mean that I could have been proficient enough to sit through a trial in chinese. That just makes my head hurt to even think about that.

This is funny. In today's USA Today newspaper (1/19) "Destination" there is a article about the new passport requirement that takes effect on 23 Jan. To the left of the passport requirement article was an advertisement from Mexico's tourism industries that addresses to the Americans (and all English so you know it's not addressed to illegal immigrants) "We want you back in Mexico. Get a passport!"

Here is an interesting Web site from www.visitingmexico.com.mx and read the first sentence in the paragraph of this link:

The United Mexican States (Spanish: Estados Unidos Mexicanos), often known simply as Mexico (Spanish: México) is a country located in North America, bordered at the north by the United States, and at the south by Guatemala and Belize in Central America.

The United Mexican States!?

It's what the United States may have become, beginning with illegal immigrants, accepting pesos at pizza restaurants in the United States of AMERICA.

Hmmm.

Check this out, Daniel. This is how things are still done in Orange County, CA. Yeah, I know, most Oregonians I meet hate OC, but whatever...this is where it is at. :)

Trespassing alleged in day labor demonstration
From Times Staff Reports
January 21, 2007

Three men demonstrating in support of day laborers were arrested Saturday on suspicion of trespassing on private property, officials said.

The men, whose names and ages were not released, were among nearly three dozen people demonstrating in the 25200 block of Jeronimo Road. A security guard made a citizen's arrest, then contacted the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Lt. Val Wilson said.

It was unclear whether the men were day laborers. They were booked into the Orange County Jail.
