SB 742 is now in the dustbin of this legislative session. The illegal alien proponents gave this everything they had and they still lost.
The sob stories. The poster children. The rallies. It didn't work.
You know why? Because legislators want to keep their jobs and a LAWMAKER who rewards LAWBREAKERS at the expense of voting taxpayers is likely to get voted out of office.

Tell us that it will create jobs
New Terms in Crack Debate
Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday that new reduced penalties for federal crack-cocaine offenses should be applied retroactively, setting up a clash over the potential release of thousands of drug offenders currently in prison.
Speaking at a hearing of the U.S. Sentencing Commission, the body that crafts guidelines used by federal judges, Mr. Holder said the Obama administration believed those sentenced under the older, stricter rules, "who are not considered dangerous drug offenders," should get the benefit of the new standards.
If there is one thing the American people are clamoring for right now it's the urgent release of felons convicted of crack related charges. I personally send a weekly email to my congressman (see example below) to demand this very thing.
And of course I don't consider people convicted of felony drug offenses to be "dangerous drug offenders" because that would just be silly. When I think of crackheads I think of the more "positively contributing to society drug offenders." And let's not forget the dealers! How many jobs does one dealer create?
At this point I think that crack related crimes should not be punished by prison at all but instead the offender could be issued a sternly worded letter. That would teach them!
The only downside to this is that these non drug offending drug offenders may no longer have access to taxpayer funded:
Aerobics
Yoga
Stationary bicycles
Bingo
Karaoke
Numerous board games and other indoor activities (cards, chess, etc.)
Current-run movies are shown nightly

With gas pushing $4 a gallon, does the state of Oregon really need to spend $2 million on a marketing campaign aimed at getting people to drive less?
House freshman Mike McLane doesn't think so. New to the budget-writing committee, the Republican from Powell Butte was struck by the state's ongoing investment in the "Drive Less. Save More." campaign launched in the Portland Metro region in 2006.
With his questions, McLane, 46, is learning just how hard it is to kill a government program once it gains traction. And by picking on "Drive Less. Save More." McLane has taken on one of the Capitol's most powerful lobbyists whose company holds the five-year, $7.5 million contract for the campaign and whose clients contributed hundreds of thousands to state lawmakers' elections last year.
First, I would argue that the state has no business spending money on this marketing campaign regardless of gas prices.
But I guess when the Bike Less Save More campaign has important tweets to send out like "Got an errand close by? Try walking it! When planning your route, try to use paths that have the most sidewalks so you won't end up walking in the street" we can see how important this really is. I never knew that I could walk to a close destination until government told me so.

At every level of government they are clamoring for amnesty. The only thing that holds them back is we the people. The elites want it, we don't. Make sure that we keep our opinions known and the pressure on. They are relentless.

Female graduates face pay discrimination
It’s better times for those entering the workforce. But despite the year’s increase in job prospects and starting salaries for newly-minted college graduates, the news is not so promising for matriculating females.
According to a report issued by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, women fresh out of college are offered starting salaries that are, on average, 17 percent less than their male counterparts.
It’s a largely inexplicable phenomenon, explained NACE researcher Ed Koc, except that men might be placing more emphasis on a higher starting salary than women.
Koc said. “It’s a prima facie case for discrimination towards women on the part of employers.
For Koc, the most realistic explanation for this discrepancy is supply and demand.
I can tell this article was written by a women because of the back and forth reasoning that contradicted itself. Arguments rooted in logic are not the forte of the fairer sex.

I would argue that people are paid what their labor is worth. You are in a mutually beneficial employer/employee relationship. If one side decides that it is no longer beneficial to them then the relationship can be terminated. Womanly crying about it won't change the situation.
If there is a company out there that doesn't pay women what their talent is worth then they limit their available talent pool. Their competitor who doesn't limit themselves this way will hire better people, have less turnover, be more successful and possibly the other company will go out of business.

The long, chilly, rainy seasons are finally departing, leaving the Black Rose far behind in our finances. We have until June 5th to catch up, otherwise the Blackrose will be evicted.
As always no one turned away for lack of funds but, we really encourage folks to pitch in and donate in this time of need.
The Black Rose doesn't have it's own website (what successful business does?) but they do have a Myspace page. If you want to "friend" them please note: We will not add anyone whose profile has oppressive content.
Black Rose is a non-profit, all volunteer, consensus-based, collectively run infoshop in Portland, Oregon. In addition to our bookstore and lending library, we also have a freestore with clothes, books, small household items, and more - all for free! We strive to be an anti-oppressive, anti-authoritarian, safer, sober community space.
So a store run on socialist principles is about to fail and they blame it on the rainy weather. It has nothing to do with the fact that they don't charge for products but instead rely on the kindness of their fellow hippies.
Free is not fair. You achieve fairness when a willing seller and a willing buyer reach a mutual agreement that they both believe will benefit themselves. This is true for labor, for books and everything else.
Good riddance Black Rose, I look forward to seeing your old "customers" at Wal-Mart!

After seeing most Mexican women in my family divorced, abandoned, and without a solid career to support themselves, I decided my ticket to a secure economic future would be an education.
Democrat women have done such a bang up job convincing men that they can be cads.
I was visiting my mother when I decided not to return to the university in Mexico. She was living here legally in the United States, but not doing so well economically. So I remained, and started working with her cleaning houses. It was honest work, but our life here was vulnerable and scary, because I overstayed my tourist visa.
You are now "vulnerable" if you are a criminal. If you have a warrant out for your arrest are you also vulnerable?
Then, the California Supreme Court and the Cal State University system gave me my big break. The Court decided that undocumented immigrants are eligible for in-state tuition rates at the state's colleges and universities rather than pay the higher rates charged to those who live out of state.
This country gave me the opportunity to get ahead, opened its arms to me.
No one opened their arms to you. You took what you wanted without permission. This whole piece is one big example of selfishness. Millions of people wait in line for what you got and you decided to just take it.
This also puts to bed the notion of the poor 2 year old brought to this country unwillingly. This person CHOSE to come here, CHOSE to stay illegally and then benefited from taxpayer subsidized college tuition.

City of Portland: currently they are bigots but they have a plan!

A Community Forum will be held May 18, 2011, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., to share information and discuss the proposal.
Equity is when everyone has full and equal access to opportunities necessary to meet their essential needs, advance their well-being, and achieve their full potential.
This is equal opportunity which I agree with.
Neither the City of Portland government nor the city of Portland’s community structure and functions currently lead to equitable outcomes
This is the city of Portland saying that the local government doesn't currently offer equal opportunity.
This of course means that they want to do things such as:
Lead a city-wide Race and Social Justice effort
Translation: equal outcomes and less liberty
Equitable budgeting
Translation: budget based on race/gender/etc
Enter into partnerships with community organizations
Translation: liberal organizations will now get more taxpayer funding. Think CAUSA.
Judging on their need for endless amounts of diversity, cultural and sensitivity training I have to assume that government workers are the biggest hatemongers around. They are constantly creating offices, departments and agencies for fairness but their goal is never achieved.
Can you imagine the social setting where someone comes out and says "I'm not fair to people based on their race/gender/etc"? That's what Portland just did.
I am anxiously awaiting the resignation of everyone on the City Diversity Committee. I mean, is everyone at the Affirmative Action/Diversity Development Office and Citywide Diversity Development Coordinating Committee not want equal opportunity? There needs to be a new office because the old office just isn't good enough?

Rep. Andy Olson, R-Albany, said Friday that he won’t allow Senate Bill 742 — passed by the Oregon Senate on a 18-11 vote in late March — to get out of the House Rules Committee, which he co-chairs.
Olson said the e-mails and letters he has received from constituents opposed to the bill far outweigh those from proponents of the proposal. He added that he has reservations about starting down a slippery slope of legislation favoring people who have entered the U.S. illegally.
“What other laws should they be allowed to break?” he said.
This bill spits in the face of Americans who play by the rules. It is satisfying to see the Republicans standing strong against it.

Seriously. Using tax dollars to give new needles to junkies is a highlight. Assisting people with their shooting up of illegal drugs is a highlight. This is not a shameful secret that if brought to light the Portland politicians would run away from it. This is what they brag about. Needles for druggies.

The City of Salem values all persons without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, domestic partnership, disability, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity and source of income.
At what point do these "inclusive statements" become so long that anyone not specifically mentioned is de facto excluded?
I think that this is also a good "check your premise" moment as well. Do we REALLY value all persons? (sheeple nodding heads) What about an unrepentant serial rapist? What about Mao? (I mean outside the Obama administration) What about Hitler?
If some government office doesn't have a signature line detailing exactly how many people it values should I assume that they hate some folks?

No sense of irony
Illegal aliens want government issued drivers licenses. To achieve this they throw temper tantrums with the following signs:
"I need to drive to work"
Working is unlawful for illegal aliens. He's asking for help to break the law.
"Don't force me to break the law let me have a license"
You are already breaking multiple laws and willingly admit that if we don't give you what you want you will break another law.

How bike-sharing could spur revamp of transit fares in Portland
The current Central City Bike Share plan would place kiosks and rental bikes across an area that's the same as the new streetcar loop, which is being extended to the east side from the Lloyd District south to OMSI. In many ways, bike-sharing is similar to public transit. Successful systems are inexpensive (free if used less than 30 minutes), widely available to everyone, and in most cases at least partly subsidized by the government.

"One of the things you could do is get rid of Free Rail Zone, but replace it with a readily available bike [share] program so people could still circulate for 30 minutes at no cost." Or, put another way, "Reshape the fareless zone to put a greater emphasis on carbon-free circulation; and the best free circulation in the Central City probably ought to be on bikes."
So the smarter than the rest of us urban planners now want to "rent" government subsidized bikes to anyone to ride downtown. For free. What could go wrong?
Are the same people who think it violates civil rights to require ID to vote going to require ID to rent a bike?
Will requiring a credit card swipe to leave a deposit be discriminatory against the poor who don't have good credit?
Will the transgender folks be able to choose between a girls bike or a boys bike?

So the smarter than the rest of us urban planners now want to "rent" government subsidized bikes to anyone to ride downtown. For free. What could go wrong?
Are the same people who think it violates civil rights to require ID to vote going to require ID to rent a bike?
Will requiring a credit card swipe to leave a deposit be discriminatory against the poor who don't have good credit?
Will the transgender folks be able to choose between a girls bike or a boys bike?
I really feel like showing up to some hearing on this idea and throwing out all these liberal arguments to ensure that every homeless bum in Portland has the opportunity to steal a taxpayer paid for bike.

We have been having technical difficulties with the Village website, largely related to problems with our former web hosting company. We have now moved to new web hosting and we are in the process of building an all-new, even better website. We ask for your patience over the next few weeks as we work to get this site up and running.
I can picture myself walking up to some starving kid in the Sudan and telling him how the poverty stricken folks in Portland didn't have Web 2.0 as recently as April 2011. This kid would point and laugh!
The embarrassment that the Portland homeless must suffer knowing that the villages of Rwanda all have Web 2.0 technology and our own village does not.
I could crack these jokes for hours or you could just go read What's so great about America by Dinesh D'Souza. Poverty in America means crying about not having Web 2.0...

Over the past four or five years, the county has provided mandatory diversity training titled 'Building Connections' for each employee. I realize that a portion of my income goes to pay for this nonsense. We need a diversity manager to prioritize the gays and make sure that multicultural groups come first. Fine. But when I find out that my beer and wine taxes go to this I become irate.

The Day of Silence, an annual event sponsored by GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network), is Friday, April 15. Students at many of our schools have participated in the last several years. Administrative Directive, 4.40.060-AD states that students are allowed to engage in political activities as long as they are not disruptive to the school's program. Generally, students participating in Day of Silence activities do so in a non-disruptive manner. The only question that has arisen in past years is whether participating students are exempt from speaking in class. The answer is no: where class participation is part of a class' requirements, students must participate in class or be held accountable for the work for that day.

I was going to make a lot of double entendre gay jokes but Portland just had it's first "professional" soccer game tonight which is all the gay I can handle in a single day.
The bottom line is that our taxpayer funded institutions of indoctrination will be spending instructional time telling your kids how much more important they would be if only they were gay.

Over at BlueOregon (where they hate black people, I keep saying it so it must be true) there is a post decrying government shutting down... smoking establishments!
But they don't argue that people have a right to smoke, that property owners should be able to freely decide whether or not their patrons can smoke, but rather they complain like this:
Even if the bill did only target hookah lounges, it would be unfair to shut them down. It's hard to imagine any health justification for allowing cigar bars (with smoke and liquor!) while banning hookah lounges; the proposal reeks of class bias against a hobby associated with the young and Middle Eastern.
Whatever the merits of the 2009 smoking ban, it has at least segregated smoking into a small number of businesses that non-smokers need never enter.
Having given in to the idea that government can tell some property owners they can't allow smoking it now shocks these liberals that the "young and Middle Eastern" folks might not be able to freely enjoy themselves along with people who want to have a drink in a bar.
I guess it doesn't occur to BlueOregon writers that non-smokers need never enter a bar or restaurant that allows smoking. Only the heavy hand of government could prevent this in their eyes.
But now their hookah ox is the one getting gored and all of a sudden there is talk of "consenting adults" from the left.
Sorry hookah lovers, either you are with freedom or you are with big government. You can't have it both ways.

Last year, then-Gov.Ted Kulongoski quietly commuted the sentences of 44 illegal-resident inmates, clearing the way for them to be turned over to federal authorities so they could be deported faster.

Forty-two of the 44 came to this country illegally from Mexico, records show.
Kulongoski cut short their prison sentences as part of a state program aimed at pruning incarceration costs by turning over for early deportation some nonviolent illegal immigrant criminals — all within six months of their release dates.
Now, the underachieving, short-lived program is headed for extinction.
Gov. John Kitzhaber, who took office in January, plans to let it "sunset" July 1.
Oregon's prisons currently hold 14,026 inmates; 1,289 of them are in the country illegally, according to the Corrections Department.
The daily cost of incarceration for an Oregon inmate is $84. By extension, the yearly cost for housing 1,289 illegal immigrant inmates would total about $39.5 million.
That's $39.5 million a year to feed and house criminal aliens in the department of corrections. That doesn't include the inmates in the county jails, that doesn't include the cost to prosecute them, that doesn't include the cost to provide them with lawyers and that doesn't include the human cost of the victims.
The Statesman Journal could do some real investigative reporting by taking the names of illegal aliens in DOC custody and checking to see if they have drivers licenses, are registered to vote, have an Oregon Trail card, check their employment history, etc.
These people didn't materialize the day they raped or murdered someone, they were able to live here by working and getting assistance from the state whether in the form of welfare, identification, an ITIN or just the reassurance that local law enforcement won't bother them for being here illegally.
We always get the life story about the most sympathetic illegal alien the media can find, how about tracking back the guy who stole an $18/hour job? Tell us who that employer was! Find out if he stole someone's SSN and caused chaos in the victims life due to the identity theft. Find out if he had been arrested for DUII but the courts let him go. Find out if he has three kids and the family lives in taxpayer paid housing.
I wish someone would do that story.

New Study Finds 57% of Immigrant Households with Children Use Welfare
A new study from the Center of Immigration Studies shows that 57% of households headed by an immigrant with children under the age of 18 receive some form of welfare. Only 39% of native born households with children receive welfare services. The study included households headed by both illegal and legal immigrants.
The research conducted by Steven Camorata, the Center's Director of Research, found that immigrant households tend to use food assistance and medicaid programs at a much higher rate than native born American households. He found that the use of cash and housing programs were about the same between the two groups.
Clearly the problem here is that illegal aliens aren't stealing jobs that pay a living wage. We must eliminate the barriers that are keeping the vulnerable criminal alien communities from realizing their dreams of sending ill-gotten dollars out of our economy and propping up foreign countries like Mexico.
I know that we hear about illegal aliens paying so much in taxes, this is of coarse right after we hear that they only take low paying jobs that Americans won't do, so I'm sure that these welfare statistics are confusing to you.
Maybe this analogy will help:
Maria the drug dealer lives in Oregon where there is a 9% income tax. Maria makes $45K/year. Maria doesn't report her income because she didn't earn it legally. Maria gets pregnant out of wedlock, I'll give you guys a minute to recover from the surprise, and goes down to the WIC office and they see she has $0/year in reported income. Maria drives to the grocery store and spends your money.

There is a critical outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough) in California: it is classified now as an epidemic. Five infants, all Latino, have died. This is due to unrecognized pertussis in older children and adults which then infects babies before they’ve had a chance to get their shots. PLEASE spread the word through every mechanism you have that it is critical to get DTaP in adolescents and adults and to get children immunized properly. Providers are not recognizing pertussis and MUST keep this in mind with cough illnesses. Families must not fear immigration to get in for shots, and the public must understand that pertussis is not brought here by immigrants---it is local people passing it around to vulnerable populations. Please share any media resources you have with us so we can all work together! This is a NATIONAL problem as increases are also being seen in several other states.
We have been talking with people at CDC and have the following links for your interest. We are working on low literacy methods to assist the public.

The memo lays out a series of potential actions — called scenarios — in a number of transportation-related fields. They include travel demand management, land use planning, public transit and pricing.
I love that phrase, travel demand management. It sounds so innocent. A search for the term on .or.us and oregon.gov websites reveal that our government masters just want to "assist individuals in choosing alternative travel modes." They will just "encourage" us to change our behavior.
Please do not resist their assistance, it is for your own good. We need our lives to be managed by those who know better.

Representative Peter Buckley (D - Ashland) calls unemployment insurance "poverty level wages." He also insists that no one is milking unemployment insurance payments.
He is just shocked, shocked, that you can't "buy clothes for your kids" if you don't have a job. I would like to take a quick moment to point out that there are lots of things that you can't buy if you don't have a job. Liberals are constantly amazed that not having an income means you can't purchase goods and services. It's just so unfair that anyone should have to work for things.
But that scariest part is that this man has actual power to make laws and is insisting that CEO's should give their salaries in "public service."

Damned if I do, damned if I don't
At the start of each trimester my children have literature sent home from school with the class syllabus and inevitably there are some fees to be sent in.
I always pay these "lab fees." This time however there is a box to check "I am unable to pay the lab fee" rather than the usual "please send me a private note if you are unable to pay the lab fee."
It's just right out there, the "I'm not going to pay" option.
I was briefly torn about this. I can afford to pay for my children and believe that it's my responsibility to do so. On the other hand I know that other parents simply choose to save their $20 and check the "I'm not paying box." Am I supposed to believe that some illegal alien family is going to give up some of their ill-gotten money voluntarily?
I also know that if the school would fire their "homeless liaison" or stop giving "free" lunches to illegal alien students then they money would already exist to cover the lab expenditures. This is just another way for them to suck out money from taxpayers.
In the end I wrote a check for $20. My feeling of personal responsibility hasn't been overtaken by my disgust with government... at least not this school year.

A suspected cocaine trafficker and illegal immigrant was arrested in a raid on his northeast Bend home Wednesday night that turned up about $1,500 worth of cocaine and other items, police said Thursday.
Jose Coca-Argueta, 27, was arrested when Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team detectives executed a search warrant around 8 p.m. Wednesday in the 400 block of NE Thurston Avenue, said Lt. Ken Mannix.
A jail officer confirmed he was being held for federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Escaped-Americans for Equality
In the name of fairness and equality it's time for us to support the Escaped-Americans Safe Driver's License and In-state Tuition Equity bill. (soon to have bi-partisan support)
This bill would make it easier for Undocumented Inmates who, trying to make better lives for themselves, find that they are in a situation where they left prison without permission.
These Americans who just happen to be escaped convicts will need a drivers license to travel safely on our roads, get to their place of employment and possibly to avoid capture.
Without a quality education these Undocumented-Inmates will not be able to get jobs to win the future. It's time for Oregon taxpayers to subsidize these individual regardless of their "escaped from prison" status.
Please join me in urging the legislature to quickly pass this bill. Remind everyone that if they don't support these ideas it must because they are full of hate.

It concludes that any new visa workers system created to integrate illegal immigrants must use the latest technology to make violating that system impossible.

As gas price increases hit the news don't forget the Oregon went and raised their tax by $0.06/gallon on January 1. Oregon now collects $0.30/gallon every time you fill up.

A nearly eight-month investigation led to a raid on a Madras apartment and the arrest of a suspected illegal immigrant on several drug charges, authorities said Tuesday.
During the investigation of drug sales from the apartment, detectives identified Horacio Galan Gonzalez, 31, as involved in methamphetamine distribution throughout the region, Mannix said.
A jail booking officer confirmed Gonzalez was being held on a detainer for federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.

Local officials commit to pushing for passage of Tuition Equity and Drivers License Access Legislation
Those present asked local elected officials from the cities of Eugene and Springfield, and the Lane County Board of Commissioners to work with CAUSA at the Oregon State Legislature for the restoration of driver's license and tuition equity.
By the close of the assembly, Mayor of Springfield, Christine Lundberg, Mayor of Eugene, Kitty Piercy, Lane County Commissioners, Rob Handy and Pete Sorenson and City Councilor of Springfield, Sherri Moore all committed to help in the effort to pass legislation for Driver’s License Access Restoration and Tuition Equity.
But the best part was the illegal alien who got up and made a fool of himself in front of all these people. You can watch the whole video but I have... documented... the funny parts for you below:

About $4.2 million in local and grant funds have been awarded for the design and construction of the trail. This funding is from a variety of sources. The largest portion is from Federal Transportation and funds for bicycle and pedestrian projects. These funds are awarded by Metro and administered through the Oregon Department of Transportation.
It's a 6 mile long dirt path that will cost $4.2 million dollars. Why does a dirt path cost so much? Maybe because they really really need a lot of public art to go with it!
Clackamas County Arts Alliance and North Clackamas Parks and Recreation District contracted a professional planning consultant to develop the Trolley Trail Public Art and Amenities Guide, which will be integrated into the existing Trail Master Plan.
Because government can't make a path through the woods without a professional planning art consultant.

Nineteen teachers and administrators from the West Linn-Wilsonville school district took a trip to Mexico for a conference in 2007.
The conference was the Universal Forum of Cultures, held in Monterrey, Mexico, a forum sponsored by the United Nations that teaches sustainability.
According to receipts obtained by the Oregon Capitol News, a project of the conservative think tank "Cascade Policy Institute", the district spent $23,000 on airfare, hotel rooms, and meals.

"I could see where people would say that, but in terms of sustainability, it was a good investment."

Can it really be so, Angela Davis on University-funded invitation, came to campus this past week, for pay to "preach" on rights abuses and moral and ethical and civil compasses?
Her publicity states: "She worked with prisoners." Here's how:
Angela Davis supplied guns to friends in 1970 that took over the Marin County, Calif., courtroom of almost retired 65-year-old Judge Harold Haley, duct-taped a cut-down, sawed-off double-barrel shotgun to his neck like a tie and terrorized him like that for several hours. When a rescue was desperately attempted, they cut short his retirement plans but ended his suffering by pulling the trigger and literally blowing his head off with both barrels.

Mr. Gonzales worked dayshift at a factory. He worked very hard. He worked long, long hours, even asking for overtime because he heard lay-offs were coming. Because of his immigration status, Mr. Gonzales knew he would not get another job that paid as well. He came home dirty, bone tired, and anxious.
Mrs. Gonzales assembled computer boards for Intel. She made about 60% more per hour than her husband. She worked with women she called her comadres. They shared meals. She came home from swing-shift happy.
Beatings began when Mr. Gonzales and their teenaged son got into angry arguments. These fights got worse, until Mr. Gonzales went into a furious rage. Mrs. Gonzales intervened, and she was hurt badly, several times. Sra. Sanchez, an older friend at work, asked Mrs. Gonzales to trust her to intervene correctly. Mr. Gonzales’ anger was destroying his family. Mr. Gonzales was losing the respect of his wife, his son, his daughter.
Sra. Sanchez told her nephew-in-law, a community activist, who asked an elder Uncle, Father Martin, and Officer Barrios for help. The four men ate dinner at the church and talked to Mr. Gonzales about his job and his anger.
Elder Uncle asked if he could come visit Sundays, Father Martin said he expected Sr. Gonzales at morning Mass, Officer Barrios told Mr. Gonzales to give any guns he had to his nephew to keep safely – no questions asked – his nephew would engage community employment resources to relieve work pressure on Mr. Gonzales, whether or not he was laid-off.
What each man did - each with his own kind of family, community, legal and moral authority - was show understanding and offer their masculine strength. What the group did was to open wide Sr. Gonzales’ family’s windows so that his community’s nurturance and his community’s disapproval could reach inside.
What the group and Mr. Gonzales know is each group member is trusted to respect Sr. Gonzales’ manhood and privacy. Their moral expectations of Mr. Gonzales’ behavior and their prominence in a tight-knit ethnic community, practically assures Mr. Gonzales compliance.
The problem identified in this story is not a lack of cultural competency by any state bureaucrat, the problem is that a criminal alien is worried about his work status because he is breaking the law.
The criminal alien then chooses to use that as an excuse to beat his wife and kid. This is an issue for someone with the word "officer" or "deputy" in his job title but our state government thinks that it's an opportunity to be more "inclusive." Enter the bureaucrat with "diversity" or "cultural" in their job title.

Meandering Thursday night post
Oregon bicycle enthusiasts in uproar over proposed ban on young children on bikes
(My proposed headline: Liberals realize that Democrats really do want to control every aspect of our lives)
House Bill 2228 introduced by Rep. Mitch Greenlick (D-Portland), would amend an Oregon statute that bans unlawful passengers on a bike by making it illegal to carry a child younger than 6 either on the bike or in a trailer. The bill includes a fine of $90.
"This is how the process starts," he said. "We have hearings. People start testifying. You start getting the information to find out whether there is a problem or not."
Another solution in search of a problem. Ourcitizen full time legislators introduce freedom killing bills for just for the sake of doing something. Rather than the starting point of "free people should go about their lives with as little interference from us as possible" they begin at "how can we make changes in the lives of our subjects?"
Every one of you who voted for annual sessions deserves this, the rest of us don't. Remember when they made changes to school zone speed limits that no one could understand? That was fun.

We should just shut up

Within hours of the attack on Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords, liberal bloggers, pundits, and even politicians raced to pin responsibility on the Tea Party, Sarah Palin, Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and the general “climate of hate” produced by opposition to President Obama’s agenda.
The idea that millions of Americans should meekly submit to an aggressive statist agenda, because resistance might provoke a lunatic to shoot a congresswoman, is deeply offensive to the ideals of liberty and free speech.
The attempts to link resistance to violence, or discredit it through manufactured charges of racism, is nothing less than totalitarian. If the exercise of free speech makes you an accessory to murder, there is no such thing as free speech. The Left has spent the last few hours screaming that all dissent from their ideology leads to violence. Well, there is only one form of government that requires violence to achieve dissent. If the Left wants to push this meme, they are indicting themselves as tyrants.

t is our pleasure to announce that M.E.Ch.A. de UO will be hosting the 7th annual Raza Unida Youth Conference (RUYC) on February 23, 2011. As you may already know the RUYC is an all day event where we invite Latina/o high school students from Lane County and other parts of the state to come to our campus and participate in a day filled with workshops, Keynotes, a campus tour and the building of relationships
One of our primary goals is the recruitment and retention of Oregon’s Chicana/o and Latina/o students. M.E.Ch.A.’s intent is to ensure that Chicano/a and Latino/a cultures and philosophies are being represented at the University of Oregon and in our surrounding communities.
Please note your skin color before attempting to attend this function being held at a public university. You may also want to avoid the campus on this day if you are a 12 year old girl since they will be celebrating Latino culture and philosophies.

The homeless man shot and killed by Portland Police Sunday had a violent past, according to Chief Mike Reese.

Police aren't releasing the homeless man's name, but say he was arrested 40 times in Oregon and California, and was incarcerated in both states.
Two Portland police officers shot and killed the man Sunday after responding to a 911 call, where a man was threatening to kill a female security guard.
It wouldn't matter if this guy had never been arrested before and led his church choir, once a reasonable person believes that you are an imminent threat to cause themselves or someone else serious physical injury or death then they can use deadly force to stop you.
And we can't have police saying "sorry kids, we had to let the guy murder your mother because he had a mental illness and we are powerless to stop him."
I don't even understand how this is something we are talking about. The cops are doing their jobs. If Sam Adams doesn't want them to shoot people he should take their guns and see how many officers stay on board.

Gas taxes being hiked in Oregon
Oregon drivers may get an unpleasant shock when they pull up to the pump in the new year.
Drivers there are already paying an average of $3.06 per gallon, but in the new year the state Department of Transportation is hiking the gas tax by 6 cents. That will bring the state tax to 30 cents per gallon.
Taxpayers in the rest of the nation, however, can breathe a sign of relief. Oregon's gas tax increase is one of the few hikes taking place on Jan. 1.
"New governors ran on platforms of not increasing taxes," said Brian Sigritz, director of state fiscal studies for the National Association of State Budget Officers.
Our governor ran on a "the government needs your money more than you do" platform and won. Such is the climate in Oregon where an acronym agencies budget is more important than a family budget.
We live in a state where the politicians tax health care to make it more affordable. A state where they want the leftover money from your unused Christmas gift cards. A state that is addicted to gambling and tobacco money.
A state where the inmates are running the asylum.

21-year-old Hector Lopez–the Portland college student who was deported to Mexico in late August–has passed his “credible fear” interview for asylum and is processing parole papers for his imminent release from a migrant processing center in Florence, AZ.
“He’s coming home,” said immigrant advocate Ralph Isenberg from Dallas, who has been working closely with the Lopez family and attorneys. “There’s nothing more I can say right now,” he said, obviously overwhelmed with emotion. The phone call from Isenberg came at about 1:50 p.m. CST.
It never ceases to amaze me how our politicians will say "we need to pass this bill or the puppy dies" but when the bill fails we see the exact opposite happen. Without amnesty the illegal aliens will only get... de facto amnesty.

An immigration bill that would blaze a trail to legal status for hundreds of thousands of undocumented students went down in flames in the Senate on Saturday, delivering a critical blow to Democrats and Hispanic activists.
"Now, the next Congress can start to put unemployed Americans back to work by eliminating the ability for illegal aliens to hold jobs and by reducing the number of unnecessary permanent foreign workers we currently bring in legally every month," said Roy Beck, president and founder of NumbersUSA.
That's all folks. The amnesty pushers can't pass a bill to benefit the most "sympathetic" illegal aliens out of the whole bunch.
Marching in the street waving Mexican flags didn't work and now pretending that criminal aliens are all just a bunch of innocent kids who love community service didn't work.
We don't want amnesty, we want illegal aliens to go home!

Who are your first role models? Your parents. What if you parents are criminals? Where do your sympathies lie? With criminals.

Lopez would be among about 2 million children and young adults eligible for citizenship under the bill. Opponents, led by Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, say the act would be in effect amnesty and would attract more undocumented immigration.
You know who might be more interested in the outcome of the U.S. Senate vote? Any one of the millions of unemployed American citizens who are tired of competing with illegal labor!
The media will continue to look long and hard for the most sympathetic case to push amnesty but these examples are the exception and not the rule. For every tear jerker honor roll student that the Oregonian can find I can produce a drug dealing rapist.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has pushed four different versions of the controversial immigration bill known as the DREAM Act without a hearing on any of them, drawing outrage from the top Republican on the committee that would have handled the package.
The new version also made illegal immigrants who had committed marriage or voter fraud ineligible, the source said, though those responsible for other infractions like document fraud could still apply.
What's a little document fraud amongst friends? The outgoing politicians want to reward those who break our laws. At some point the rest of us are going to decide that we get to pick and choose as well.

All in all, the campaign of the Kennedys and the gilded-pitchfork waving mob of limousine liberals they lead against Cape Wind has been one of the greatest episodes of hypocrisy in modern memory. On Capitol Hill and in the auditoriums of universities, the talk of this crowd has been all green energy, all the time. But when they found out that the green energy they so love to preach to you and me might affect their views or endanger their next drunken yachting regatta, suddenly it had to be stopped.
So now the Kennedy Clan has discovered a horrible secret about green energy –it turns out it costs more than regular energy! Yes, millionaire Ted Jr. put on his best Ralph Nader impression in the frightening Halloween eve opinion piece and laid out a very rational argument against the poor people of Massachusetts having to pay higher utility rates just to support feel-good green energy.
